The Watcher Season 1 Ending Explained

- In a circumstance like the one Nora and Dean Brannock are in, what does "the end" even mean? At first, it was a matter of security or prestige; it was the large house in the suburbs, far away from the bustle of the city. And that was all. But in truth, it was only the start. However, the Brannocks left 657 Boulevard without having accomplished anything and failing to sell the property.

I personally came to the conclusion that if the preservation thing doesn’t like a new neighbor they all become the watcher
The most shocking thing in the last episode was the stairs being connected to the tunnel. 😅 I was like OHHHH. There was multiple ways in
Lol 😂 right, and if it wasn't Mo and Husband shot in the face, then who was it???
@@Sean-ox1wx u dint watch the series??
their son bought in 2 people who looked like them n killed them
@@Nature.Therapy890or so she claimed
It’s funny to me how everyone is saying there was no clear answer given for who “the watcher” is. The first scene in the series shows the Braddock family at the open house and the son looks up at the 3rd floor window and sees John creepily “watching”. The last scene shows the new family that has moved in and you see John looking out that same window again “watching”. If that’s not enough right there to tell you that John is THE watcher I’ll go on. John was introduced to Dean later on claiming he’s a health inspector and rants about the “4th turning” -something Pearl also mentioned- and how he had to fix his daughter despite it being traumatic for the whole family. John Graff is based off of the real life John List who murdered his entire family in Westfield New Jersey and disappeared. The details about the murder were pretty much exactly the same in the show; ie. the arrangement of the bodies, the weird note saying he was trying to save them, the eerie music he played during the murder spree and him disappearing afterwards and not getting caught for almost 2 decades. In the show they find tunnels under the house and chase after “the watcher” who is VERY clearly revealed as John in the beginning of the next episode when he is let in by Pearl and says “they’re onto us” insinuating that Pearl is part of “the watcher”. So with that reveal it can safely be assumed that the cloaked figure seen in the house killing the ferret, lurking around, turning on that eerie music and scaring Karen out of the house by murdering her dog and appearing from a secret door in the stairway, is definitely John. Furthermore, it is clear that someone is living in the tunnels and it’s obvious that it’s John. He’s the only character introduced that doesn’t have a house and again is the one that was REVEALED as the person in the tunnel wearing a black cloak. Since it is now known that John and Pearl are working together, it’s possible John wrote the letters on Pearls typewriter and Pearl sealed the envelopes. The details of the letters could only be written by someone who is in the house listening, which was clearly shown to be John. Finally, the last episode shows a meeting of the Preservation Society inducting new members Mo and Roger. John introduces himself as William and Roger says that he recognizes him and asks how his family is doing, which to me confirms that he really did kill his family and the murders were covered up by the neighbors and possibly even the police department (which would explain why every character is suspicious and probably hiding something).
W i like how u said it . Literally it s the only thing that u can think about and even if u don t it s the only one that don t have detalis to his backstory . And the simple fact that the black woman told him that she hired him to go to his house and make a sandwich and stuff wouldn t make any sense elsewhere since that s the only thing he basically did and after he " agree" that s not him he literally erased his presence from his head . Either way I don t understand his wife it s weird . It s either she know that the husband didn t let the past alone or she s trying to get smth from the house too.
So who was the Og watcher that sent the letters initially to John?
Bruh who was the girl that was in Deans room while he was sleep 🤣 & who sent the letter to John. He sent the letters to himself maybe?
@@aaronshipp8766 i think that girl was pearl

Yeah it was like: oh shit dean's about to catch some hands but thats all
Agreed, they were like “oh shit it was the PI the whole time,” and everything SORTA made sense but they yanked back in like the last 20 minutes. Completely threw everything away and left us with 20 minutes of confusion for me at least.

I thought the main characters were stupid to not focus more on the tunnels. Also, why didn't he visit the lutheran church!? It was John graf.
RIGHT, I would of went back down the tunnel with a gun & an axe. I would of broke down that entrance to the other side!
why John wants to be the watcher? I don’t get it
@@levi_the_eggplant john was the watcher because he didnt like changing the house
The Theodora story makes no sense. She coulda told him a story he would never have figured out and it woulda worked. She had to know he’d realize she never owned it.
How though ? He went back into town and asked .. she was assuming he wouldn’t and would just leave it. Tried to give him peace but he ended up going back there
It bugged me out that Roger knew who John or “William” was by asking him hows the family but nothing else was said!?!?
Not only that, but Jasper quickly changed the subject after there was clear tension after him asking that.
That’s called a setup for season 2.
Why not put a hidden camera near the mail box. Also a guard dog is definitely a good idea. As soon as the one guy mentioned hidden tunnels in the show I was like yes now we get to see Dean rip the basement apart looking for them tunnels explains how the get into the house, even the notes mention the basement but no he ignores the whole dame thing and continues to try and figure out who the watcher is. I loved this series but later in the series it gets frustrating.
the watcher mails the letters.
Most of the letters were mailed, they had stamps. You'd only be catching the mailman.
why not further investigate those tunnels to really see where they lead. And also place a camera in those tunnels?
@@poknut69 I was thinking the same thing. The tunnels were mentioned plenty of times. And what about the music that was playing? How did they get into the house attic speaker?
It was soo annoying and frustrating
I believe they actually revealed that the watchers were Pearl, Jasper and John but it was poorly executed.
john and pearl were my guesses since ep 5. i still believe it is them.
Disappointing ending!
yes
that’s why i always feel nervous watching these kinds of shows on netflix because most of the time thry have a stupid ending like this. very disappointed
It was 7 hours to not know who it was 😂😂 was silly I give them props for keeping him me hooked for that long
Yeah. It made me angry too like all this plot for what??
The ending was disappointed. But I still liked the show. And in real life they never did find the watcher. So I think the ending of this show was pretty accurate to the real case.
This was an interesting end. The family moves out of the house and are no longer being stalked. But at the same time, Dean has now become obsessed with the events that he now became a villain in some ways.
To me it seems like everyone that was in the “preservation committee” thing were all collectively “the watcher”.
There was no explanation whatsoever for the girl in Dean's bedroom in pigtails. At this point I can only conclude that she was a ghost of John Graff's daughter. He said she was boy crazy and even had some sort of fling with her much older teacher so it makes sense she was curious and attracted to Dean as her life was cut short and the flirtatious exploration of her sexuality was interrupted
It was Pearl in the pigtails. Their private detective said she hired her in the last episode
@@endless_waltz18 that whole story was a lie to give Dean closure

I feel like everyone in the town's goal is trying to get Nora to leave Dean. I'm super suspicious about how her art suddenly 'took off' and now she can support the family without dean
What's suspicious about it? She's a talented artist, you can't engineer success like that. Can't convince Art Basel and Basel Basel to invite some artist based on nothing but a recommendation. The fact is that Dean messed up by buying a house he couldn't afford, and getting a $150,000 loan for unnecessary remodeling. Carrara marble is perfectly fine, I watch Million Dollar Listing, it's very popular.
@@blucolife its a show? He’s probably just saying it’s suspicious as in maybe the neighbors brought a lot of her art or something lol
@@Zzz-wu5df If the neighbors can afford to buy her art, they can afford to hire a hitman. I don't buy his theory, the neighbors have a way to freaking out anyone who buys that property. You saw how quickly they got rid of Karen.
@@blucolife you must not know what hiring a hitman in the suburbs like that would do to Everyone in that town
@@user-tg9gt6bk9u Is it really impossible for an artist to become famous and get invited to Art Basel? I don't think so, art is subjective, a year or two ago, someone nailed a banana to a canvass, and sold that painting for a ton of money. Besides, her neighbors aren't that rich, they're just creepy and stalky.
There is not just one watcher, it is a repeating cycle. Pretty simple
John Graff did say 4th cycle ended with 5th cycle starting
Seems like it yea I thought it was Nora who killed Karen’s dog standing on the stairs
That makes sense because when we first saw john he talked about a cycle or something
@@mrcosmo6747 how would nora even know there’s a hidden compartment halfway up the stairs. nobody ever talked about that.
@@scampig9715 that’s why In the letters it was saying it’s so much to discover in that house but they only thing they really discovered was just the tunnels there’s has to be more I’m sure.
I'm confused. Who was behind the case? What was with John? The tunnel? The girl who was on the videotape? Mo drinking blood?
It's a true story they never found out who it was.

Same, was all that just a plot filler? John Graff said, “They’re on to us.” In the tunnel scene…What was all that about?
Mo was a bs story Andrew pierce made up cos everyone debunked it and said he was a pathological liar
@@rockerdude86 The story is fiction inspired by several true stories. The ending was disappointing.
The beginning was obvious...you has two people litrally watching the house and other people watching it. Then the old man who loves the house so there are alot of watchers. The person sending the letters was probably the woman with the long plated pig tails and her weird brother
she thought it was her brother jasper but I’m still confused about that “John” guy and pearl bc of that tunnel scene

They are rich but are they aren’t thinking.
why can’t they get guard dogs or install camera inside their house.
Or throw some smoke in the tunnels so they would know where it leads to.
Or close down any possible hidden entrances..
they were getting bankrupt
Exactly my thoughts. How can ghey be wealthy and so dumb at the same time? The tunnel would've helped them to know the truth.
Looks like so many of us here just binge-watched the series, and now can't figure if we positively liked it or positively disliked it. Mostly people seem confused though. Haha.
I guess, we're left to come up with our own conclusions or read up on the true story behind it. Maybe let the city/town or something buy it and then see if all this is really true or just a hoax/ prank.
They even threw in the John List story into the series.
Anyway, the new people who bought the place don't seem to have had any problems.
In the series, it seems like they are all the watchers, each one obsessed with the house.
There was an Asian movie, which was nothing like this story, but had these squatters, or more specifically, a mom and her kid, who actually lived in peoples houses. These houses weren't even mansions. Just modest apartments.
For me the weird part was how the cop showed up at the home when the daughter called the cops on her dad and how quick he was to offer Dakota a hand helping him with his equipment. Weird as fuck.
Bruh was Dakota in on it? The ending didn’t really make it clear
About to send me crazy as them tryna figure this out
Facts 💀
I'm going nuts over here, at the end they made you question every suspect all over again.
@@colecampbell5328 it did happen the black lady lied to make dean feel better about himself everything happend we just don’t know who it is
Arent anyone going to speak about that John were up in the window at 657 for the new family when they were moving in? He were clearly still keep using his secret tunnel, he is living with the crazy lady and Jasper and goes under the tunnel to update them for all the new construction which is to be done. Rhen they speak about it in their club. Then they togheter make the watcher lettere togheter.
as we remember John also had the watcher, and as said in the letters «it is now my turn» i belive the watcher goes on from person to person. John probably had an old one many years ago, and now he haa been for years and to everyone while hiding in the tunnel and at Jasper. And now Dean is obsessed and he wil like to join in also beeing the watcher.
Everyone who is involved with the house is watching it and can’t seem to help themselves, but I think pearl is the mastermind behind making sure nobody “greedy” or really nobody at all moves in and stays there, William or “John Grady” lives underneath the tunnel in that room and does all the breaking in / physical scaring
After being fully invested in all 7 episodes I was pissed off with the ending. The whole point of the ending should've been to finally know who the watcher was. Waste of time to watch smh
I’d actually recommend people to not watch this show. Save your time! Save your energy! Save yourself from a headache!
I stayed up to 4:00am watching to get to the endless ending! What a waste of time!
Just go to Mr. Ballen RUclips channel and listen to the true story!
Same lol work tomorrow! Wish me luck
I think the watcher is more of a sickness than an individual. There’s no singular person making notes. Even Dean himself created fake notes to scare people away from the house. The obsessive cycle continued unbroken.
so true, also Dean became a Watcher in the end
Put a camera on the mailbox, done. Instead I sat through 7 hours of awful storylines and horrible acting. I did appreciate the diverse actors.
The watcher would already know that and find another way to get their message across. The watcher knew they had cameras inside their house pretty much a day or two after they had their first visit to get the cameras installed, it didn’t stop them.
I think he mailed the letters, they had a post stamp on them
The Watcher aint a person its a close knit community. They hate outsiders.
Exactly!
I think there’s really a blood cult thing going on between that robe worn and the kids story, that one neighbor referenced adrenal glands and they gave crazy looks the whole time. I think there’s a curse and like a mysterious dark force surrounding all these events, sort of like final destination but it feeds on greedy people, and that neighborhood group is the underlying cause.
But there wasn't, that was just a made up story by the crazy guy that Theodora manipulated.
@@blucolife yes but her story was fabricated too so she used anything she could to make it fit to give peace to dean
Theodora was lying so the family would have closure
@@blucolife Yea but she convinced that guy of the letters being real, he actually heard his son telling him about the blood thing.
@@Dyl_Cam He also claimed a school principal molested his son on a field trip he never went to. Either way, the adenochrone sounds like something from QAnnon. South Park also mentioned it the pandemic special episode 2.
I havent seen this full video yet but i feel like everyone are the watchers because they care so much about the house so they keep trying to get people to sell it so it will remain abandoned so they can buy it
Listen to RUclipsr Mr Ballin tell "the watcher" story. Hes a great RUclipsr that tells scary stories. He told the story two years ago. Its super accurate to the show and creepy as hell.
Some of the things I thought they'd add for entertainment where actually true.

I'm not a fan of how Dean is implied to be The Watcher (or at least one of the Watchers). I feel like just the neighbors being in on it makes more sense.
There was some excellent acting in this series and the story was addictive. The ending was a disappointment though. The preservation society members were obviously the watchers. Yes watchers, plural. That was obvious after the tunnel scene in which she says "They're on to us".
Kindve feel like I wasted my time with that ending and the show. I understand its based off something but that didn't stop The Mist from making an amazing ending.
At this point I feel like the viewers are the actual watcher, especially since the filming perspectives were a lot like we would be looking inside the house from outside from time to time
I was thinking that all the people who understand the fact that some occult things are going there are watchers for the new owners of the house, and they dont want anyone to own that house.
Hell naw if it were me honestly I’d fight all the way through and through it’s my home.
Didn’t the private investigator say she made most of the story up about her writing those letters ? At least the daughter confirmed it at the wake?
The PI was lying about her confession, she did it to give the family closure.
Dumb story line with the PI pretending it was her.
@@surfnyolly it’s what really happened wasn’t it?? This is a true storu
Im so confused. So whats the problem here? Just some random sending letters and killing pets?
Yeah looks people get scared easily. I am not with killing the animals but what I heard the real life one no did that and no one enter the house just sending letters . Which to me I wouldn’t care like okay come by and let’s talk .
Who is that guy pops to attack and scare Karen in the last episode? Isn't that "the" watcher?
I think the title confuse you for a reason " The Watcher " it's actually many watchers and I think that Dakota is in as well.
Probababbly all of them since Dean join the Watchers. Season 2 would be great.
Considering the tunnels aren't real that doesn't help anything with the real case. They were made up for the series. I mean really, if they were real who in their right kind wouldnt have a saw opening the door on the other end. That would give you a quick answer to who was coming in. But since they aren't real that's why they weren't explored in detail. Obviously the watcher is someone who wants no one in the house. They are jealous. Every community doesn't like change. Start remodeling a old house and neighbors talk. Logically the watcher is a local homeowner that doesn't approve of new people. Distant but involved still. If I had to bet money it's the historical society or someone that feels like they are entitled to that house and no one else. I think a lot of the letters were sent in good, but someone twisted those for their purpose and used that to strike fear. More or less, it's a grumpy neighbor that seems nice and innocent. Just wants you gone.
It's possible they made the ending vague so they can begin a season 2. I remember a time when a movie had a beginning, a middle and an end that made sense. Not anymore, now you have to go online and look up what the hell is going on or what that thing was or who really did what. I'm still trying to figure out what Matrix 2 and 3 were all about and the latest sequel bored the doody out of me so I didn't watch more than 15 minutes.
There won’t be a season 2 because they never found the person behind it in the real case
@@Elli0tx If there is money to be made then there's a good chance they'll find a way to make a season 2.
@@carlcat True. If enough people want a Season 2, they might make one.
@@Elli0tx There will be a 2nd season. Ryan Murphy won't be ending something like this. The tunnel, the cult, the story about the house...it's based on a true story but they can decide who ever the watcher is since it's a series...
the watcher is us since it's open ended it's meta. They could've took creative license and have been creative or atleast imaginative instead of rely on the story and embelish 90% and not have a real ending. Mixed feelings about this, mainly the tunnel so many plot devices and red herrings just to continue the story for anyone who has seen more than a handful and has watched twilight zone etc can disect it
Show was great until the ending... it's one thing to end in a mystery. It's another to end it with 100 plot holes.
Think the lamest part is not explaining why the weird lady across the street had the crazy family killer living with her for years. Huh? That whole plot line just falls apart.... and killed an otherwise pretty good show.
Shooter McGavin was good. Stifles mom was GREAT in it.
The ending was to make us want to watch the season 2. Like most series do. 🤣
Also, I laugh at the ending where Dakota sending those flyers. Good business eh. 🤣🤣🤣

Anyone else think that the daughter was max from stranger things with dyed hair??
Omg yes!! I thought she looked familiar!
She does look a lot like Sadie! I thought it was her at first
This started off okay, yet to many storylines going on an not enough eposide to cover them all, I understand it was meant to end ambiguous, but so many plot holes, like the girl with the pig tails, the tunnels, the neighbors murdered, like it was just to much.
The wife is apart of the group. She didn’t tell Karen “I’m watching you” for nothing

To me this movie was satire. Great actress &actors in this movie❤
It was Dean the whole time.
If you watch the credits, it tells you the name of the actor who played the character "The Watcher", but no one ever watches the credits on Netflix because the suggestions come up before hand.
That's not true, lol. Only tells you the name of the person who VOICED the watcher as people read the letters. Also, the main characters, their names are never shown. Just the actors names. Sooo,
It's at the very end in different languages.
The credits aren't meant as a reveal. They only use a voice actor and "dummy" actor for the watcher silhouette.
I guess u were expecting someone to ask you “who was it?” But mission failed I guess lmao
The watcher is rean delos reyes but that doesn't mean anything.
