  • Jaco Mylan is like any other 11-year-old boy. He loves rugby, dancing and washing machines. Jaco also has autism. In this intimate documentary, Welsh actor Richard Mylan reflects on his experience of raising a son on the autistic spectrum. Like all parents, Richard wants Jaco to be happy and independent, but he's well aware that having a child with special needs means you have to plan further into the future. Will Jaco be able to get a job? Where will he live? How much support will he need? Through spending time with adults on the autistic spectrum, Richard comes across funny, surprising and inspiring individuals who have their own unique take on living with this lifelong condition.

Bravo Jaco and Richard. I have a cousin who has autism. With support from courageous parents, he can live independently. He's in college now by the way, and it's been remarkable to see him growing up becoming a fine young adult.

I am a grandmother raising two boys on the autism spectrum. They are only 6 and 2. Every day is an adventure and I love them so much. They are constantly surprising me and give me a great deal of joy. The task of raising them can be infuriating at times because there is so little adequate quality support. Much of what I learn is from paying close attention to them and knowing they are deeper than anyone knows.

Great job ! I am raising my son who was diagnosed with ASD. Initially it was very tough to cope up with the problems we were facing. I myself being a paramedic was totally unaware about ASD. But today he is attending school with mainstream students and doing quite well . Don't know what future holds for him, we are just doing our part. Best of luck to u too.

I have a teenage son with autism, it was a real nightmare to be told that he had autism. With love and support, my son is enjoying life despite the fact that he is non verbal with severe learning disability. I am blessed to have him and each day he brings joy into my life. We have our own way of communicating. My dream is that he is given the opportunity to be an actor .

I have to say that if it hadn't been made known that Richard was Jaco''s father there's no way I would have been able to tell...Richard relates to Jaco in the same way that a qualified carer does...and yes, we carers DO relate to our service users different to their parents!...

Hello, we have a son who is autistic, used to hit his head on the walls and floor, smashed his forehead in blood, kicked me in the stomach, pinched everyone he saw in the street and at home, could yell for hours, threw things, his tantrums knew no bounds, He broke everything at home, acted like a man possessed, he was screaming and looking away, as if someone unseen was hurting him badly, the medications the doctor prescribed made him more aggressive and suicidal. I was very scared when I saw how he reacted to something invisible, I went to church and confessed to the priest, for myself and for my son, we ordered prayer services in churches, prayed a lot ourselves and began to give the child holy water, I have always confessed previously helped with addiction, and various problems, and every time I confessed, my son stopped behaving badly for a while, changed before my eyes, it took me several years, when there were backlashes I always went to confession. Now he laughs sometimes for no reason. You know, the way of healing is a long way, but you should not lose faith, God is merciful, and everything is possible for him, he sends such children for the salvation of the soul, God wants to bring us to church for salvation, and when people are doing well, they often become arrogant and mean, and the church sacraments give great strength to survive everything, and through confession and communion of parents the grace of God works in their children. Good luck to you and don't lose hope!
Confession and other church sacraments heal everything! then it is impossible to live without them, after you have received unexplained grace in your soul and body. And it is also desirable to go to church with your husband, and let him also confess for the sick child, tell the priest everything that the child does, after the permissive prayer it becomes much easier, pray also for your whole family. If possible, give the child as much communion as possible.
Also, order vigil and prayer services, and give alms when possible. Read prayers with your child, if possible. My eldest daughter was also healed, she had many problems, developmental delays, concentration problems, incontinence of urine and feces, constant bacteria in her bladder that would not go away. The doctors gave her antibiotics but they only worked for a short time. She couldn't go to school at all, she sat and did nothing, her teachers wanted to send her to a school for the demented because of that. You know, I went to church and cried by the icons, prayed to God to help, it all lasted a long time, but once my daughter was different, all the problems were gone, Thank God, now she is an adult, and is studying for a profession, when I ask her, When I ask her if she remembers her painful, bitter childhood, she tells me that she does not remember anything negative, God gave her a new heart, as I asked him to do once. You know, I thank God for everything, for what he has brought me to him through the illness of my children. Good luck to you all, and God's Grace!
