My opinions on this vehicle are... complicated, to say the least. I may be an internet stranger to you, but if you care to hear my thoughts about the Apparition project, it would perhaps justify my excessive time spent at a desk, sipping tea and typing on a computer about an automobile. Having been an enthusiast and, well, a bit of a scholar of Rolls-Royce for many years, I can say with great certainty that tfits nicely into. Many people would begin by criticizing the design, and I have my critiques as well, but we must take the designer's intentions into account when discussing Apparition. This project was most likely just as much meant as a form of artistic expression as it was an automobile, and Rolls-Royce is the perfect outlet for that combination. As for the design, there are some elements I enjoy. exterior wouldn't be too bad either. Overall, to fix this somewhat controversial vehicle, I have a few notes: 1. General improvements: The design is obviously quite unusual, featuring a completely exposed driver's seat and protruding spare wheel beside. Both these features, in my opinion, have no business being present on a Rolls-Royce. As mentioned before, I would make this car taller, but only just enough for comfort as a traditional sedan, because I understand the small and sleek design is meant to evoke the look of a racing yacht, so I would try to strike a fine balance between practicality and sleek design. 2. Wood is good! The mahogany wheel inserts are my favourite detail of Apparition's design, although admittedly somewhat impractical, and I feel the motif of wood is underused here. My first instinct was to indent the sides of the middle raised section and have the sides decorated with the same mahogany inserts, perhaps stopping just short of the window trim while still allowing for the window's natural curvature to be outlined by the silver-coloured bodywork. Additionally, the space left by the middle section's taper inwards at the front could be fitted with wood. There is a good shot of them at 0:34. I'm referring to the sections at the sides, coloured a slightly darker grey than the main color, that start from the headlights and gradually form a point and follow the flow of the side panels tapering inwards towards the front wheel arches. Those are the sections I would replace with wood as well. This would evoke the deck of a boat, with the silver middle being like the base of the mast. 3. Interior interior of Apparition, I would start with leather and wood. The leather would be a cream color, very saturated light yellowish-tan, with diamond-shaped cross-stitching. The floor would be polished wood, darker and redder than the mahogany of the exterior to contrast with the leather, with raised aluminum pinstriping on the wood. In front of each seat would be a deep rectangular cutout in the wood, inside of which would be a perfectly fitting lambswool carpet in the same colour as the leather. The fixed centre console would house an ergonomic remote for the fairly large screen mounted on the partition. The remote would have a bottom that was made of the same dark, reddish wood as the floor, while the sides of the remote would be wrapped in the same leather as the seats, in the same colour, of course, and with tasteful stitching. The remote's face would also be the same colour as the interior leather. Sidenote: I also imagine the remote's centre select button and its four surrounding directional controls would be made of wood, and the "Select" text on the central button would be engraved and printed in a gold colour, as well as the arrows for the up, down, left and right controls around the centre button. Just a thought. The centre console would also contain a single glass carafe, perhaps with intricate geometric detailing, for the purpose of holding drinks, behind which would be space for two drink glasses, with both the carafe and glasses being kept safe by circular cutouts at the bottom of their storage area in the centre console, which cradle them and prevent them from knocking around and creating noise when not in use. Of course, it's the digital age, and everything needs charging. For this purpose, I imagine the centre console lid could be lifted, and the walls around the carafe and the drinks would bear four USB-C ports atop them, two on each side, for easy access. controls. However, as nothing more than an improvement upon the Phantom's design, the seat adjustment controls would be positioned on the door armrests, easily within reach, where previously they were located on the sides of the centre console, requiring awkward movements to adjust one's seat. The seats would be luxurious as well, featuring full reclining and support for the back of the legs, like a first-class airplane seat, or more specifically, the Phantom's "Serenity Seats with Fixed Centre Console" specification, with the obligatory Rolls-Royce headrests bearing the name "Apparition" in a sophisticated, cursive font. The previously mentioned partition would provide total isolation from the driver and would feature a large screen which could be used for entertainment purposes. An intercom system would provide communication between driver and passenger, at the passenger's discretion, of course. Above the screen would be three circular dials; the middle dial being an analog clock that would show nautical time, the leftmost dial being a speedometer to monitor the driver's usage of the vehicle, and the rightmost dial showing the car's remaining fuel range. In conclusion, Apparition's concept is not unique, but its specific usage of its concept and its execution thereof certainly is. There have been multiple Rolls-Royce bespoke collections and two coachbuilt models that have been based on yachts and boating, however Apparition is unlike its contemporaries in that it both takes inspiration from and seeks to emulate the design of sleek, elegant racing boats. Its design is, among other things, bold and novel among motorcars. I appreciate the designer's attempts to capture the quintessential feel of the racing yacht in the form of a motorcar, and I of all people appreciate even more his choice to create his design through Rolls-Royce, but my personal opinions are that Apparition is more an intentionally designed artistic statement than a functional automobile, which it may or may not succeed in being, depending on the lens through which one chooses to view it. Through the lens of purely artistic sensibilities, I am unable to precisely state if it is indeed art, as the definition of art is as malleable as art itself, but through the lens of automotive design, which is a domain I am more comfortable in, Apparition is a visually ugly yet noble attempt to present a unique and potentially fantastic idea.
Seeing this brings to mind a sidebar comment by a Car magazine writer decades ago regarding the Panther 6: "Whether it becomes the darling of rock stars and middle eastern potentates matters little. What matters is that the thing is utterly revolting -- as revolting as a fat, slimy slug."
