  • I have used the Canon EF 70-200 F4L IS for many years. Canon recently sent me the Canon RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM to try. This video will cover some of the things I like and don't like about the new lens.

I use EF-Lenses with my EOS RP. So I can still use them with the EOS 5D, EOS 6D or the APSC-Bodys. For me, the picture quailty of my TAMRON SP-Lenses is very very good.

I got to the end of your video where you are comparing prices, I love the 5D there is nothing like it, but being the owner of an R10 and an R8, the images that come out of those things with Ef lenses are mind blowing, the autofocus is amazing, I like those mirroless cameras and of course the 5D

This was a totally negative review. I’ve been a Canon customer for 44 years both professionally and for personal projects. The move for me to the R cameras and RF lenses has been so welcoming. Optically the lenses are improved, the control ring adds a third quick adjustment, the AF speed is super fast and on the R5 & R6 the People AF is a god send.
The RF 70-200mm f4L IS USM I chose because formerly having the EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM II I found I rarely shot at f2.8 and the weight saving was a big plus as I’m alternating between portraiture and hiking landscapes. Optically this lens is better than its EF counterparts which is important using the 45MP on the R5. Interestingly I don’t have stiff zoom rings on any of my RF zooms ( RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM, RF 24-105mm f4L IS USM, RF 70-200mm f4L IS USM, RF 100-400mm f5.6-f8 IS USM). I don’t find the zoom ring throw an issue either.
The other advantage is I can pack into a medium sized backpack one R body, the RF 24-105mm, RF 100-400mm, RF 16mm, filter holder, filters as well as a hard shell jacket, head torch, spare batteries, gloves, water bottle and not break my back like I did with the DSLR and EF lenses which needed a larger backpack.
Canon could not remain in the DSLR world with Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus all showing the advances in mirrorless just like the change from FL/FD in lenses to EF or from film to digital in cameras Canon has to stay relevant.

Thanks for your comment I appreciate your opinion on these cameras, I have an R6mk2 on order to try. I tried the R3 sent it back. I hope to find a combination I like in the R system because I am using the 5D mk4 and dont like the colours or image quality from it. back the 5d classic that I love.

Love your videos! Always lots of useful tips in them! This time I received a new aspect that I never thought of before: the changing balance with telescopic zooms... Previously I mostly thought of internal zooms in terms of pro status, weather protection, dust resistance... But, despite compactness, "telescoping" may really mess up with your posture and hands stabilization. Not much, but these tiny peculiarities make true professionals. Can't wait for new episodes! Thank you! P.S. *If I may suggest a future topic:* any 1D series cameras (1D, 1DS, 1DX). Ever worked with them? What are pros and cons and why pro wedding photographers are not really fond of them (preferring 5Ds and 6Ds)? I personally tested and reviewed 1DX and 1DIV and fell absolutely in love with them, but I never shot weddings...

I'm with on the 1D video idea. I've got a 6D, but I really really want to get a 1Ds iii as it appears to be the best possible compromise between performance and used price in the 1D line.
Mr. Barley I'd really love to hear your opinion on these cameras...

Lots of useful insight here Richard, thank you. For wildlife photography i use the 7dii for action and the Eos R for macro and silent shooting scenarios. The exposure simulation and manual focus peaking on the Eos R's viewfinder are great for extreme macro where the subject is nearly always in the shadow of the camera/lens. RF lenses completely unnecessary.

I bought an Ef 70 - 300 f4 - 5.6 for my 5D mki, they don't play nicely unfortunately but I put it on my R10, man, the results are friggin amazing, I cannot believe how well they play together, I have the same Ef 70 - 200 f4 as you and it plays really well with the 5D, R8 and the R10, happy days

I get what you mean.I only recently got my first ever 70-200L(a very beat up 1st gen 2.8) and already the ease of zooming is my favorite thing. My left hand can hold the entire camera/lens combo near the tripod mount and easily zoom with the fingertips. Its actually easier to zoom that way than using the entire left hand to zoom a kit lens😄

  • @charlesamery-behr3153
    @charlesamery-behr3153 5 месяцев назад

Have you actually used the RF version? How can you do a comparison without any tests? I agree with that the internal zoom is nicer to use: Very fast and can be done with one finger. However you have not mentioned all the advantages of the new lens, such as the size and weight. The EF lens also requires the adapter to use on a mirrorless body and adds even more weight and affects the balance. The RF lens autofocs is faster and the tracking is better. The image quality is only sligthly better than the version II EF lens, but lags behind the original EF version "compared" here. On the whole this is a very unbalanced review.

You can’t judge images on an iPad/phone screen anyway. Look at DPReview or others for that stuff. Look at the MTF charts etc.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I have a 2.8LISII that I don’t carry anymore because of bulk and weight. I had an f4LIS before and loved it- now that I also have R and R5 bodies alongside 5D4, I’m looking for which f4 to buy. All these points are valid- I’ll pick up the EFII.

If Sigma is allowed to supply RF mount lenses they'll likely have an affordable 70-200 f/2.8 with internal zoom but I would guarantee it would be much heavier. Still, it would be a great alternative if it does come about. It could be another two years away though. 😒😒

I only have a 16-35mm wide zoom which I love for landscapes, and a 40mm pancake lens for street photography. I'm just waiting for the right deal to come along on one. I've seen a few of the EF variants going for around $700, but I've been told they can be had for less if I lookout for one.

You’re on a great track. I started with the 16-35II and 70-200f4LIS with a fast 50. Ended up testing every 50 out there. Smartest I ever was. Then I got into Zeiss primes, realized Canon couldn’t make a great wide, got the 70-200 2.8 fever, and i ended up with multiple kits. Had all 3 voightlanders, but kept all the Zeiss primes, 9 now. Don’t get sidetracked, stay the course you’re on.
(I was a photo pro from 80-90 with a big studio and lots of strobes and systems. Flipped to design, sold all my gear for child support, started to teach design and photo, bought Canon digital.)
