Yarding Skidding Logs w Ford F-250 Super Duty

- When you have logging to do and you don’t have equipment, you can do a lot with a 4 wheel drive pickup truck. Including, using them as a log skidder or log yarder. For many years I used a Ford truck as a log skidder. Years ago it was my 1976 Ford F-150.  Then I used my 1997 Ford F250 with a 7.3 L Powerstroke diesel. Now I am breaking in my 2021 F250 super duty with 6.7 L diesel. The key to logging with a pickup truck and not destroying them, is take it easy. If a log won’t pull with a reasonable amount of pull, don’t do things like take a run for it and jerk on it. Don’t dig a hole by spinning your tires at full throttle. If the log won’t go, go back and readjust your rigging or do something different.
In this small scale logging operation I am salvaging wind blown trees. I am yarding firewood logs to cut up into firewood .

I do like that idea. I have thought for a long time, my dad and I both would be good advertisement for Ford. If only they had any idea what we have put their trucks through over the past few decades.

Great content, and it's great that you display that you don't need expensive equipment to Log. I am going to try the rigging system you use, but I think a learning curve is going to be my reality. I agree about the safety gear, I run a 5.6HP saw, it will amputate....lol
I was really hopeing to see that root ball standup.
The dirt around that one was settled in so much it wasn’t moving anywhere. I have a couple other bigger ones to cut off, I am guessing at least one of those might stand up.

Great tips for getting logs out of difficult terrain. Any issues keeping chains sharp while bucking after dragging them? Great channel. Thanks for the effort to share.
Dragging them through the dirt always makes them dull faster. There are ways I manage it. If you notice on the first log, I cut it into firewood length rounds before yarding it out. But I only cut about 2/3 of the way through so they stay attached. I hook the line on it so the part of the log that is already cut will be the part that drags on the ground. The other side I still have to cut will be clean, if all goes right. I didn’t do that on the second log, partly because it just came up whole unexpectedly, and because it has smooth bark that doesn’t collect as much dirt as furrowed bark.
A dentist drill has a top speed of about 30,000 rpm. I do believe your chainsaw exceed that!
Now after you mention that I will probably be compelled to mute that if I ever do it again so I don’t get reminded of the dentist drill. 😁

Can you show us the self release block, at your landing in another vid pls, I would like one of those.
I tow my logs around with an old Ditch witch, and I often Snipe the leading end, stops it snagging on roots and rocks, stopping progress, easier with a saw, once done by real men with the axe.😅

Your block and tackle method works really well. Plus no need for diesel fuel for a D6. 🤣
And tires are a lot cheaper to replace than undercarriages.
The cost may be the reason why you have not done it, but have you considered getting a second bed for your woodmizer to make milling at both places easier? Then you would only have to move the sled(?) between the properties. The woodworking enthusiast in me feels a little sad to see such thick trees bucked into firewood.

They make shackle trailer hitch receivers that are meant to act as a pulling point for your vehicle. They are reasonably affordable and a good piece of kit to add to your vehicle recovery setup.

I do know about those. But since I would have to keep switching back between that and the trailer ball for the trailer, often multiple times a day, I would probably end up not using it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Do you find the scent of Grand fir to be a pleasant citrus-like odour? I actually prefer it to Doug-fir, but only just.
The wry tone in your voice of causing the overnight rain by leaving gear outside is spot-on. I find it's a better method than a rain-dance or sacrificing small creatures, (again, not in a creepy way...)
I also laboured on Labour Day. Every day is Monday on this property!

I prefer to have every day a Monday. I haven’t thought of grand fir being citrus like, but I can see where you are coming from there. Or maybe I should say smell, not see. When it is fresh cut and green I really like the smell. It’s a tough call but I might actually like it more than Doug fir. The pitch can be messy, getting all over my clothes and gloves, but it sure makes everything smell good. But if you cut into a rotten one, those can really stink.
What will happen to your trees at the side of your forest. They always be subject to high winds. Will they fell of one by one?
That's easy to yard out, if you know what to do? Put a block up in a tree!

What do you think of that Grand Fir as firewood? I get lots of it where I am and I find it to be “meh” to burn. Not a lot of heat.
I don’t spend the winters in this area so I don’t burn it. I spend my winters at the other property that is in another area where we don’t have grand fir. Comments I have heard from around here is it makes good kindling and it’s good for starting fires and getting quick heat. But it does burn up fairly fast.

Grand fir no good for lumber?
It makes decent lumber. But at the time the video was made, there was very little demand for fir lumber in that area. And my sawmill was several hours away at my other property.

I'll make a deal with you. I won't tell that you pull logs with your F250 and you don't say anything about me pulling logs with my 1998 1500 dodge ram
If we are going be making deals I should throw in my 1997 F250 and the old 1976 F150 I used to use.
