NORTHERN EXOTICS I have a southern toad, a fire belly toad, some aquatic frogs ( African clawed frogs and dwarf frogs, ) and besides the amphibians I have a crayfish that eats insects sometimes as well :)
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS As an alternative to the egg cartons, could you just add the remaining bedding a week or so (or whenever most females are done laying eggs) after the moths emerge to the top of a new batch of the honey mixture? I'm guessing the moth bedding would be filled with hundreds of eggs. If there is a lot of the old mixture left, you could add the egg filled bedding to several new mixtures and make multiple breeding colonies. Do you think that makes sense?
I cant find my comment.. I did this and said it never took off but wow I was wrong. I thought the eggs just weren't gonna hatch but then I really started looking and after a month i noticed super tiny little baby worms. On the top of the grain oat mix is a graveyard of old moth corpses and I'm hoping they recycle mom and dad. Lol
Thank you! I been getting mine at a bass shop and this seems much easier. I also like the idea of my own little colony. I have a jumping spider, and two salamanders. Interesting, seems I’ve been breeding by mistake 😂 I bought wax worms for my praying mantis to pupate into moths for him to eat (too big for fruit flies). Awesome will definitely give this a try. Couple of questions How long does the colony last? Like can you just keep adding oats and honey when it starts to run low to keep it going or does it get dirty and you have to start a new colony? Also do you know roughly how many eggs each female lays? Thanks another great video
This will be a great project for fishing bait. I also have an aquarium with native fish that this will be great for. How quickly do the waxworms multiply? And do you poke any holes in the lid?
Guys please help! This has worked amazingly, thank you so much for posting it! However how on earth do you keep the tiny hatchling in a tub 😂 they are smaller than even fine insect mesh! Help!!
Hi, I’ve recently come across your video, I have a quick question and was wondering if you could help me. When waxworms go into pupation stage, do I leave them in the same tub I have them in or do I move them into another pot with some substrates/oats/honey on the bottom. Hope you are able to help me. Thankyou x
We are going to do this. our local pet store keeps running out. Do I need to worry about the moths getting out when I open the lid? I don't want moths in my house... Great video. Thanks for the info.
What would be a good setup to only raise one generation bought from larvae give half to my grey tree frog. Then pupate...wait for eggs then feed the adults to the frog
Thank you for this informative video. Question... if I’m breeding the worms in a container like this, can I dip into the container daily to gather worms for feeding or will it disturb those pupating? Or... do I need to keep some for feeding in a separate container and just leave these alone?
How often do you have to change the substrate? If you don’t ever have to change it, do you add more honey down the road? Also, would it be successful if I left the cartons out and accepted a certain amount of egg loss?
Does your honey get hard? I’ve seen videos where they add glycerin to keep the honey from hardening. Curious if I need to do that. I noticed you don’t add glycerin to your honey/oat mixture.
I need help! I did the oatmeal and honey in a tote. I have had a bunch of moths grow out of it...but what do I do with the moths? Leave them in there? Set em free? Feed to my chameleon? And what should I be looking for to know I have a colony going?
In fact, they dont need so much honey if you can give them a more various diet, they can eat syrup and bees' wax to match the diet they are used to eat in wild. the soil bean powder gives them protain.
I bought some waxworms for my bird feeders and thought well I could try to breed my own. On reading the leaflet which came with the waxworms I discovered that they were especially bred for food and they would never pupate but just die after a certain time. I get loads of hits but none of them specifically say they will turn into moths given the right conditions except those in the USA and I'm in UK. I don't want to buy more and find that again they are of a type that will not turn into moths. Can anyone recommend somewhere to get waxworms suitable for eventual breeding please., would be grateful. Great vid btw, very informative, very useful thanks.

Do the moths feed on that same stuff before they lay their eggs? I saw another video where they said to put wax paper in there but I wasn’t sure if it was food for the wax moths or just for them to lay their eggs on. I’m trying to breed as food for a Kookaburra and they are almost all in the pupae stage now in a container just a little taller than yours but pretty much the same (I followed your video for the oats honey and egg cartons). Also, when it seems like the moisture is gone (looking from underneath) do you need to add more honey? And, if so, it’s probably best to do that before they become moths right?
Are porridge oats just plain oats or what exactly? I’m in America and we have a lot of kinds of it and we call it “oatmeal” and I want to make sure to buy the right one. I used plain Quaker Oats for mealworms once and it got molded after a few weeks
Will this work for red worms as well? We couldn't get wax worms but we do have red worms and we could get wax worms but it would be a little while but I'm wondering if it's much different between types of worms

Does the honey and oats ever mold or like go bad and do you have to clean out the whole thing becsuse of that?
Hello me again, if im not useing honey, do wax worms need water?
How often do you have to change the substrate? If you don’t ever have to change it, do you add more honey down the road? Also, would it be successful if I left the cartons out and accepted a certain amount of egg loss?
This would be great because my local petsmart & Petco never have anything in stock and in the winter it’s a pretty far drive for a small cup of worms
How do you know that they are laying eggs/breeding and how long does their life cycle last? And would you have to add more honey and if so how often?
Does your honey get hard? I’ve seen videos where they add glycerin to keep the honey from hardening. Curious if I need to do that. I noticed you don’t add glycerin to your honey/oat mixture.
Question:
My substrate has gotten pretty hard and not sure what else to do for them. They seem ok though. Do I do anything or just let it be?
Question: so once you have this set up. Can you take some wax worms out to feed, but just make sure you don’t take too many out?
Hopefully my tarantula likes waxworms! Thanks for the tips
