I was in 1st grade when my father gave me my first knife (I still have it 45 yrs later). It was (is) a folding Buck knife with 2 - 3inch blades. He preached from the get go that a dull knife is a dangerous knife and taught me how to use and sharpen it properly. I don't remember any of them but am sure I cut myself a time or two but I still have all my fingers and toes. I did the same for both my son and daughter. They are in their mid teens now and none the worse for wear. Teach them to respect a sharp knife and to earn trust and responsability and they will be a better person for it. The sense of pride they will display is almost overwhelming. Treat them like a snowflake and you will teach them to become a snowflake. Teach them responsibility and they will become responsible. Carry on. It appears your grandson is on the right track.

Absolutely agree with this idea of a kid safe knife. I believe kids should be around outdoor things and learn about safety. Thank Billy!

Nicely done Billy Joe!!! Bravo!!! I honestly believe you have already achieved your goal of a Kid Safe Knife. !. You put an edge on it, transforming it from weapon to TOOL. 2. You took the time to actually teach the lad knife safety, and I've no doubt you patiently taught him well. 3. Last but surly not least you took the time to raise the awareness of grand-dads and dads all over you-tube-land. He is such a fine lad and fortunate to have you for a grand-dad. Many parents /grand-parents wouldn't have the slightest idea or common sense to do what you have done here. Nicely done in deed!!! Thanks Brother.

Nice job , hope he does not lose it so he can pass it on to his kids one day . Just turned 57 the other day . Had to come back to this post to tell you about my fun with knives when i was younger . Friend and I were playing with knives after i just sharpened then . Like dumb kids we were throwing them up in the air and watching them stick in the ground .Well I couldn't see mine on one throw so i asked pete can you see it ? We found it sticking out of my foot . I know how did you not feel it , just didn't . pulled it out peddled back home bout 1/2 mile . Mom was vacuuming the house she went crazy . I was more scared on getting in trouble for wrecking my new runners i got the day before . One was bright white the other was full of blood . Still have the scar on my right foot .3 stitches . between the big toe and one next to it . This was back in the late 60's . Take care and thanks for sharing your knife .

Hey Bill! You can’t begin to imagine how much I enjoyed this little video. It brought back a flood of memories. Every kid is different, as you observed, but I think Kadyn is ready for one like you made (nice, very nice job). If he gets cut, of course, Mamaw will kick your rear, and I will have to avoid her at the camp meeting, lol! It does call out for a leather sheath. Maybe you might...just might...know a great diy guy that could make one! When I was about his age, someone gave me a beautiful new small pocket knife. I ran to proudly show it to my Daddy. Without a word he took it, turned around, and to my horror raked the point on the rough edge of our concrete porch until it was blunted. I eventually lost it, of course, but never got a serious cut. I hope he hangs onto his. He will treasure it as a memory of Papaw long after you are gone. I have a couple of amusing knife memories that I will share with you when we meet soon. Assuming I don’t have to hide from Memaw!

Looks like a good idea! I got my daughters a Mora with the guard on the front and back and has a rounded tip. I noticed that the sharper the edge, the more control they have of the knife which makes it safer. They were 5 and 7 when I got the knives for them and only use them under supervision. As long as the child will listen and stay calm when using the knife they can learn safe knife use. That knife safety class sounds like a winner!

Well, tell you the truth, I don't like getting poke in the finger, even for a blood sample. I think that is a great idea and I like the style of the little knife. I got my first pocket knife (Barlow) when I was around 8 or 10 years old, still got it somewhere. When a child gets a knife is up to the parents, if they don't approve then it's age 18. I know grown men that don't carry a knife, they never have and I can't understand that. One friend asked me to use a knife and I asked him if he forgot his and he said "I don't carry one".

I don't know, Bill, I got my 1st pocket knife when I was 5, I gave my daughter hers when she was 6. Statistically speaking, a dull knife is more dangerous to the user than a razor sharp one, accidents happen when you have to force to get it to cut.

    • @billyjoedenny
      @billyjoedenny  5 лет назад +3

i do agree a sharp knife is safer , the blade is sharp in the one area for now. i can change the profile as he learns knife safety . or just graduate him to a real blade later when he shows true knife safety .
      thanks .

A Sharp knife is a safe knife. Teach him to keep it sharp, two skills for the price of one! A sharp knife requires less force to use, and less force means that any slips that happen won't have as much force behind them, and less possibility for injury. As to that knife itself, my opinion I think would be that you should use it to make a try stick yourself, and if you can't, it's not a good design for a child. If you can, maybe it'll work for him for a while until you (or his parents rather) are comfortable with him having a real pocket knife and a real fixed bladed knife.
I agree that it's how one is brought up, and as such, teach the knife safety, and once he learns the rules, he only gets to use the knife with supervision for a few years, then he has proven his competence with it, he can keep it. I've been carrying a pocket knife since I started school. It's never been used as a weapon, never even been used to threaten someone as though it were a weapon. I've known kids who were safer around knives than their parents. I think it's about respecting the tool and just how bad you can get hurt by that tool. Adults have used them for so long, they are very comfortable with it and forget that it can be dangerous when mistreated. Kids know it can be dangerous and so still treat it with respect. It's also been a whole lot less time since they learned the rules of safe knife handling. Another thing I've noticed helps with kids is that you make them keep repeating the rules back to you, and mix up which rules you ask each visit, so you know they aren't just repeating them in their heads or something, but actually know the rules. I do the same thing with teaching the rules of gun safety, and even make adults do this.
Learn a bunch of activities that can be done with knives, not just whittling and such. Teach him to cook by prepping the vegetables. Of course, that means that you have to learn how to do it safely first, so you can teach him. (there's a technique that they teach for safe knife handling where you can't cut yourself where you curl your fingers away from the blade and rest your knuckles against the side of the blade as the blade moves. if your fingers are always on the side of the blade, they can't ever be under the edge of the blade, and you can't ever get cut.) It's a life skill, and women love a guy who can cook! (of course, you don't have to tell him about that side of it till he's older! ;) )
When you protect children from doing anything remotely dangerous, when something remotely dangerous happens, you guarantee that they will be unprepared for it, and it's likely that it will harm them badly, assuming that they survive. If the worst you ever have to endure is a paper cut as a child, your parents did you a major disservice. This is why we should not allow ourselves to give in to the fear-culture that currently runs rampant through western civilization.

great response torrey, i do agree that a try stick would be a good test . never thought about cutting veggies ,that would be a good muscle memory chore to teach him .. by the way ,i didn't mention the blade profile can be changed anytime if he has problems using the knife ..
      thanks .

Stirred to memory the first knife Dad give me @ age 5. He'd too had dulled the cutting edge, but didn't round the tip off. Since it was in effective to whittle with, i found it was perfect for sticking into the ground. Well, reckon the excitement of seeing how deep it would go into the ground caught me holding on to it just a little too long before letting it go, & it wound up nailing the top of my left bare foot about a 1/4''. After the tiny puddle of blood was stopped Mom's dishtowel, & while Mom had given Dad her ''I told you so''... then it was time to go get that tetanus shot. Obligements for the stirrin' up them fond memory chips billy. Can't tell how you many times i'd cut my whittle holdin index finger... but it's scars sure could.
Blessin's on You & Your'es; till we are better blessed by all those things yet seen, heard, & felt, within those promised many mansions. -5119

Im of 2 minds on this, I was taught how to carve at around his age and was told that a dull knife is a dangerous knife. I like the look of the knife but disagree with the blunt tip, the draw knife section may work for whittling a stick to shavings but what about making holes or actually carving. I totally get the pawpaw aspect I have grans from 2-16. A 12yo grandson I wouldn't trust with a knife away from the table and one who just turned 10 who has been carrying a swiss army knife around the house and when in the woods for several years and carries a sheath knife when hiking and camping. My 10yo granddaughter has a swiss army knife in her hiking bag and a sheath knife she's allowed to wear when hiking or camping but her 7yo sister isn't responsible enough yet. I think if you are going to entrust him with a knife , under supervision, it should be a real knife.

She knew where we were from our locators but still freaked out...how sci-fi is "locators" my kids got me one when I started traveling and exploring so I dont end up dead in a walmart parking lot for 3months...lol
