Before my 2 kids turned 13 years old we did everything together. If I weeded they helped. When I cooked or baked they helped. When I prepared for a celebration or holiday they helped with the prep work. When my oldest, my son, turned 13 I felt he was ready to take on responsibilities on his own. He cooked dinner one night a week, did his own laundry, took care of his room and was assigned his own chores for cleaning the house while my daughter continued helping me. Once she turned 13 we began a rotating system for everything except their rooms and their laundry. This is when I included their dad too. We each had to cook one night, they had to come to me with a menu plan/list so I could get the necessary ingredients. We rotated setting the table, clearing including putting away left overs and washing dishes. Then one night was take out, like pizza, one night a crock pot or one dish meal which I took on, and the final one was leftovers. The house cleaning chores rotated from week to week too. At 13 they both got an allowance. If they needed extra money for something I had a separate chore chart (like weeding the gardens, watering the plants, washing out trash cans, washing the car, raking, snow shovel the walk ways, power washing the house, washing windows, etc.) with a dollar amount next to each task that they could earn. I also wanted them independent so through their growing years we showed them things like changing a tire, sewing a hem and button, cleaning a filter in various appliances, calling to make appointments, budgeting, writing checks and tithing, making small wood projects (like shelves, molding, baseboards and the like) and completing minor repairs. Every Sunday was craft day where we tried many different things like making dream catchers, painting bird houses, or frames, learned to make jewelry, crochet scarfs (they used many of these treasures as gifts) and even practiced sign language and Spanish. They are now 40 and 38 years old. My son is a carpenter and my daughter is a CNA. I am so proud of them and happy with how I raised them.

Teaching children to be disciplined, competent, successful adults. WHAT A CONCEPT!
I love that they can do it in whatever order they want, giving them a sense of control and independence.
I wish my parents had done this! I would have been much better prepared for adulthood.

Girl, you are beyond. The fact that your children are learning responsibility is wonderful, obviously. But the fact that they have the freedom to choose their work, learn, play times and activities....that is a skill that we all need as adults! What is the goal of raising a child? To produce a happy and healthy and helpful member of society. You are going to have 8 little adults that are gonna give you such blessings. Wow. I’m totally impressed. (BTW I don’t have or want to have kids but I so appreciate parents that are intentional with their parenting).

Oh my gosh! You were just BORN to do this... To be a mom to thousands or millions by teaching parents how to parent. AMAZING.
Everyone in my family has a bunch of kids and they are well behaved but this just tops everything I've ever been taught. The best motivation is self motivation so you're instilling the basic components in them that are required to reach goals so they can set their own later in life and know how to actually accomplish them!!

I applaud you for not raising children to be children. You’re raising your children to become productive members of society and adults you’ll actually want to hang out with by choice and other people will too! It’s awesome that your kids can intelligently explain the system without you prompting them. Good job!!
And I’m using the clipboard system for myself!!!

The clipboard system has changed our lives!!! My girls have a morning checklist and a night checklist. We also adopted your chore sticks! My girls draw 2 chore sticks in the morning, and then that evening, we set a timer, and as a family, focus on a zone in the house. It’s been so nice! My kids even get onto ME when we don’t make our bed now 😂.

And that's what made me think of this request - Could you please make a full video (like a Day in the life of Hutch) him explaining & doing all his chores parallelly, as to how he gets it done (like from a kids perspective). I'm sure he will be an inspiration to MANY kids!!! It will be a great video for all mommies out there, to show an example to their little ones!

I did Jordans productivity boot camp in May when it was free. One of the first things I implemented was the clipboard system. I have two - one for their chores and we keep it in page protectors on the fridge and the other set is for school (we homeschool) they keep on their binders in a page protector. IT HAS BEEN A GAME CHANGER. I didn’t realize how much brain space I was using up just trying to make sure that teeth are being brushed, beds are made, rooms clean, etc. Once I set up the clipboard system I literally felt a load lift from my shoulders. Again, I didn’t even know I was carrying it. My kids have loved checking off their boxes and now I don’t have to tell them throughout the day what to do - they know both chores and school.

We’ve been doing this for a few years but I’ve added several things to my kids’ lists since watching your last video about this! They honestly haven’t been finishing them lately but I don’t mind because that means they just don’t care as much about screen time as they used to! They get too caught up in reading most days and don’t end up finishing...not a bad problem to have!

Real Life Weavers, we aren't into electronics and video games much here so that isn't a draw for my kids either. I merged your clipboards and block system for my kids. I blocked out 4 time periods and put tasks in each one (including Norms, learning, exercise, Jobs/Chores). We could never keep up with a check list that needs to be actually checked off, and my kids are close enough in age that I created one list for all of us (I actually use it too and instead of learning I'll work on a project), laminated each section and put it on our main corkboard/dry erase calendar. So basically at these 4 times, whatever their doing is stopped and we focus on the list, once it's done you can do whatever you want. You're absolutely right (and genius) that it takes the responsibility off of me if they want to play video games and then I also don't feel like they've been lazy all day. Since I have only 2 kids I just made 2 weekly chore schedules (vacuum, trash, etc) and swap them on sundays. Sunday's is give me 1 dinner idea and usually they help me make that dinner. Our weakness - we are all night owls and wake up late.

Wow your raising some extremely responsible kids. Wish I had something like this in place when my kids were young. I have 2 teens in the house almost 15 and 16. I'm going to try something like this thanks

I LOVE the "cooking day". Such an organized way to have the kids help in the kitchen, I'm implementing this immediately. My kids are going to love it! Hopefully no more fighting over who gets to help 🤣

Love it! I have a 2.5 year old and a 9month old...ideas for the younger ones would be awesome! I'm amazed at your insight I to helping your children become self sufficient. I get my toddler help where he can...and he loves it.

This is pretty much what I've done with all of my kids. My three oldest are now grown and on their own, the oldest is 29, two still at home. Sometimes we've used clipboards and sometimes we've used binders. I do like the clipboards better. I have a clipboard for myself too along with my planner. It's a great system! I couldn't stand having to run through my mind and figure out what each kid needed to do and ask them over and over what they had finished. I loved how handing it off to them just took that all off of me and helped them to be more responsible. I used to draw pictures before my computer days and once I started using the little clip art pictures for my pre readers, they begged me to go back to drawing pictures for them. They weren't much more than stick figures! LOL! I am sure you sharing this system is going to help so many people!!

Excellent. I had four kids and always provided organisation for them. They are responsible educated adults, and only make reference here in that, the organised activity did teach them personal accountability and motivation. Well done! Awesome to see your family being nurtured this way.

Productivity boot camp helped change our home since covid. This has been so helpful as a working mom and so kids stay busy. The kids love checking off their box and there has been way less fighting with me and each other.

I just started this with my 3 year old. He enjoyed helping me color pictures of what he has to do each day before screens. We are excited, and maybe we can get in some better habits! Also the block schedule for kids is genius!

I love the clipboard system. When you have a large family it’s a must. I’m one of 15 children. My mother was amazing. She was the queen of Excell before it was a thing. All our chores were written down and planned out each week. We didn’t have “screen” time but we couldn’t wait to go outside to play. I wish I would have had you in my life when my kids were young. The meal helpers is a wonderful idea. I have such a hard time deciding what to make. My son is 23 and doesn’t know how to cook. Lol

I love your ideas and how you implement them. I have a 3 year old and I'm wondering what age is a good age to start the clipboard system? I'd also love to see a video of the kids cooking days and what all that entails. Do they choose meals from your meal planning list? If not do you let them choose the meal altogether and budget accordingly? Do they help with cleanup (dishes/kitchen) after their cooking day? Thanks for everything you do!

We have something similar for our 4 and 6 year old. We did full sized paper and wrote a little story to go along with it. We included expectations of behavior and attitude as well. I took pictures of my kids doing the chores and printed them with the story. It works so well! And if someone has an uncooperative moment, I bring the book out and read it and they immediately change their attitude.

I've just found your channel on RUclips, and I absolutely love it! Since covid and lock down I've been retrenched, and have now taken on the roles of stay at home mom, home school teacher to my 2 kids (grades 3 & 5, home maker, and I work from home doing 2 separate jobs to help supplement the income. It's been a real adjustment, and lately there are days when I feel so overwhelmed by everything, not least keeping the kids busy and out of trouble and motivated for learning. And they seem to fight constantly!
I absolutely love the clipboard idea and want to do them for the kids ASAP! Also the block schedule to help them be more in control and involved with what lessons they do when. It all sounds so good! I can't wait to try it, and just hope and pray it's as successful in our home as it is in yours!
