These videos are amazing
I got a set! They’re so beautiful ❤ I’m going to frame them.
Bro, we really do make the best train videos together! We are the TRAIN BROS! Can’t wait until we hop on another train next week! 🔥
I see a future RUclips in the making?
sounds like the title for like a series or something: Train Brothers, or Train Bros. Cool stuff.
Hey Will- What a duo loved it! One ticked off your list!
Yes!! Train bros!!
This series needs to happen! You make any video you're in better with your energy!
Michael (and his awesome friends) have single-handedly done more good for these railroads than their marketing departments could ever dream.
Soooo true…..
Plot Twist: they are the marketing department.
I totally agree
😂😂
Quite possibly, but only if CSX and the other freight lines would keep the rails better maintained and share them more consistently, you would be onto something there. I ride CSX rails multiple times weekly going into and out of DC and the rails get very sad in several stretches where we stop, switch tracks or slow to a crawl. Sometimes the 45-minute commute takes two hours. Compared to Europe's train system, we suck.
Okay I'm obsessed with this channel. Now I have to go book some train trips.
This
Don't stop at the train trips, all of his videos awesome to watch!
Welcome to the club.
amtrak empire builder best one to relax
HE LOVED MY COMMENT!!!!!!!! OMG that was my fav train i went to montana on it.
I haven't had a vacation in 34 years! Work work work! I remember, when I was 5 my family and I rode a train from cincinnati,oh to new Orleans, LA to visit my grandfather. The dining car, the sleeper car. I will do it again and want to share it with my children and grandchildren. I'm 62 now, so that train ride was long time ago. You never forget and neither does a 5 year old.
You deserve a real vacation! I'm sure you've given yourself some days to relax but you deserve another real vacation! I'm 20 years old, working in the aviation industry and the past year and a half has been hell, even I feel like I deserve a vacation and rightfully so! You deserve that breath of fresh air, take it from a random stranger online!
A pretty cool thing about the Pikes Peak Highway is every year since 1916 they have a hill climb event.
I've done that drive many time and can't fathom doing like those racers do. The record is under 8 minutes and that's crazy.
Yup with many classes of car!!!They stopped motorcycles from doing it after a motorcyclist died doing it
I cannot afford to go anywhere at the moment; these videos are genuinely a good substitute. You two are so easy to watch, it feels as if I'm there - like I'm your weird cousin you've been kind enough to let tag along.
- American cog railway
- riding a trainset ordered from and made by Stadler Rail in Switzerland
- on rails ordered from Poland
*Mr. Worldwide*
The idea for this railroad came in 1888 after a trip to the summit by inventor Zalmon G. Simmons. Simmons had designed a wooden telegraph insulator while on the board of directors of Western Union, and was surveying Englemann Canyon for telegraph lines to the top of Pikes Peak. It was a miserable two-day trip on a mule and after his return, Simmons was convinced that there needed to be a more "civilized" mode of travel to the summit of Pikes Peak and decided to fund the construction of a railway
Thanks rocket man 👩🚀
Thank you Dear Leader.
Crypto investing has brought me great success!!! Irrespective of the economic depression I can boast of over $12,000 dollars every week on my investment. All thanks to Mr Richard…Thank you for your focus on quality stocks.

I now know how my Dad felt going to the Movies as a kid and watching the serials like FLASH GORDON and THE LONE RANGER. You would watch the current chapter maybe once or twice and had to WAIT A WHOLE WEEK for the next installment. There may be ways to see them all sooner but then that would ruin the fun of the anticipation. I have currently moved back home to help take care of my Mother. She is 87 and needs just a little help. Waiting for the next Downie Live train adventure helps the time pass and things don't seem so bad. Thanks For Bringing Us Along.
May you have all thar you desire in life for being such a good kid and taking care of your mother. I know it's difficult as I did the same a few years ago.
How is this comment 4 days old if the video just came out 10hrs ago?
Because Members of the channel get early access to the video. They were able to watch it last week.
@@DownieLive thanks for the reply.
I have no idea how i stumbled on your channel (a while ago), but so happy I did. Your videos are just so full of joy and edited so well. This series has been especially great. Love it!
Thank you so much!!
Whilst all DownieLive videos are great, the best ones are those with Will as his attitude, enthusiasm and most of all that laugh are infectious and could brighten anyones day.
Agreed!
You guys do compliment each other well as travel buddies. Keep ‘em comin
Mike, thanks for bringing us along on your travels. You’ve made me want to book a trip across the country on a train and try some of the unique trips you’ve shown us.
Go for it, Ken!
U live & learn didn't even know they had a train with cog wheels. And this was a really beautiful gift for both you and your friend will awesome ❤️
This series has to be the most wholesome travel vlog content of all time.
I never even knew this existed! I'm fascinated with it now! Great video and glad to see you and Will having a great time together!
Happy to see you and Will back together because you guys are what makes videos like this amazing. True passion between two friends and the excitement they bring is just incredible energy.
The Pikes Peak Railway was one of my favorite trips when I went to Colorado. I wish you had the chance to make it to the top because there’s an awesome visitors center where they sell donuts. At least you two had a chance to drive up the mountain! Also, please make sure you buy cans of oxygen for the train. They sell them all over Colorado, particularly at Walmart, you definitely need it for the railway and higher altitudes in Colorado!
So sad I'm caught up on the series and now have to wait for the rest. But, I'm very excited to see what is to come. Your videos are so well done.
The amount of happiness and wholesome entertainment I'm getting from this channel!! No drama, no negativity, just boys and their trains!
I love it! There are ALL ENGINEER NERDS running the train! Heaven!
I can't believe there's a race on the Pikes Peak Highway every year. So badass.
That hotel is BEAUTIFUL! Was it insanely expensive? 🤑 That's the second time that you couldn't get all the way to the top! 😟 I'm lovin' your train journey. I'm so glad you're sharing it with the rest of it! THANKS! 🥰
Downie I have loved watching this series of different trains across America, I live in England and watching your video vlogs makes me feel like I’m travelling with you, your parents and friends. I loved the videos with your parents your dad reminded me of my granddad and your mum is like my mum was before she got really sick and is now in a care home. Keep up the travelling and the blogs
I found this channel a few weeks ago at the beginning of your journey, and I have to say this is the most fun I've had on youtube in years! I'm writing stuff down, researching the places you're going, and making my own bucket list! What a great series! Keep it up!
We love seeking Will on your channel he brings in interesting perspective. He is always smiling. TC BT
Glad you enjoy it!
@@DownieLive Will is so cool , does he have his own channel ? Also I believe you mentioned he is a US citizen. Just curious how you guys meet. He make your videos so much more. thanx BT
My family loves watching you guys... and Mike's dad!
Can we just appreciate how much time Mike puts into his video and his content love ya brother
I've lived in Colorado since 2009 I once rode the Pikes Peak rail when I was younger and I grew up a few hours from Durango these latest episodes seem to all be in my backyard. Great episode Mike!
You can sure see on your faces what a blast that was! I love this series because I have never heard of most of these trains! Thanks for taking us along on this adventure Michael!
It's good to see Mike and Will together, again. Usually, I want to be with you ... however, I'm terrified of driving "switchbacks," so this was a great chance to see the summit.
You should see the nuts who race the hillclimb 🤣
So happy to see a fellow Canadian Sharing a passion for trains in very entertaining way. I didn’t know that America’s highest railway was locomotive hauled. A few decades ago they used a pair of DMUs. The colours of these units are very Swiss looking too similar to the RhB railway
I have not travelled much by train but now I need to definitely plan more train trips. This episode as well as the prior train series ones are simply mesmerizing. 💯 ✅
You should!
Another fabulous trip and with your best bud as well! How could it be better?
Awesome Ride! Thanks for including Will. You guys have such a good time together. Looking forward to next week. Happy Trails!
Thanks! You too!
Most excellent, especially so with Will Edmond! (such wonderful infectious enthusiasm when y'all collaborate). The Cog is a great ride, a fave of mine; looking forward to the Durango SIlverton trip (tho I prefer the vistas of Chama)
WILL!!! his smile is so infectious and it's always nice to see him
The fact such a beautiful and important railway was almost destroyed in favor of cars...I'm glad Spencer came to his senses and decided to let the highway and railway coexist because this rail really is unique and provides spectacular views just as much as the highway does. And it's nice to have two options, especially when you can't reach the summit on one.
Fun fact, there used to be a funicular in the same area too called the Manitou Incline that opened in 1907 and operated under the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Got some bad luck though. First the original summit house was burned down in 1914 and had to be rebuilt, which the rebuilt one was replaced in 1958, but if that wasn't enough...it had to shut down PERMANENTLY in 1990 because of a rockslide that washed out the rail bed and it was just too costly to fix. It is now a popular hiking trail.
I go to manitou all the time, love the area, glad to see you feature it. My dad was even in a movie filmed in Old Colorado City which is next to Manitou.
For those curious, its Pools of Anger (1993)
Another great video my brother. Pretty damn cool 💪🏼💪🏼
Writing from Australia, the island Continent. Late to the channel, but it's interesting reading comments from people who have never or rarely travelled by train, whereas for most of my life I've tended to travel by train in preference to flying or driving or as an alternative, flying to my destination then using trains, rarely or never driving as my means of transport when I get there. However I did have to drive from Denver to Manitou. Mike you have facilitated a lot of rail travel for these folks and that's a good thing. Did this railway in 2008. Nice to see a new train here now.
Love you and Will together and the twin hoodies. . Safe travels. Thank you!
Damn dog.. Every once in awhile you come across someone who has *genuine positive* energy. You possess that. Thanks for making my day brighter! Not sure why these were recommended but i've been enjoying the heck outta them.
Keep movin keep groovin'
Great episode! I rode the Cog Railroad once years ago. It was clear all the way up, then completely clouded over during the 45 minutes we had to be at the summit before the train started its trip back, so no views from the top. I was also light-headed up there, but they told us to drink lots of water which definitely helped. So my time at the summit consisted of visiting the rest room and buying water at the cafeteria. The clouds cleared for a beautiful descent down. The views were amazing going up and coming down, with mountain lakes and the occasional "whistle pig" (yellow bellied marmot) along the way. Michael is right, Manitou Sprints is very charming and the Broadmoor is beautiful. We visited the Broadmoor for breakfast one morning and then walked around the grounds - much cheaper than staying there.
This has been a brilliant series. Great concept, Mike. Loving it. 👍
And wonderful to see you reunited with Will!
Thanks so much!
I loved seeing/hearing the history how the hotel tied in with the train. Beautiful scenery. So good to see Will. I really enjoy your videos.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great vlog Mike. I love the Broadmore Hotel and the Cog Rail is pretty awesome as well. The thin air is something else. Such a cool trip, thanks for taking us along with you.
I Swear this series is just going right through everywhere I've been or lived. I made that same drive nearly 20 years ago and its just as breathtaking (pun intended) in 2022 as it was then.
Fog on Mount Washington and wind on Pike's Peak; so unfortunate for you Mike. Will is very lucky to have you as a friend.
These landscapes are Incredible.
You hit it out of the ballpark again. The trip just keeps getting better and better! 😁👍 Looking forward to next week.
Glad to hear it!
Mike, I haven't done the Pike's Peak and Manitou, but I have been on the Durango & Silverton. I think you and Will have found that it is a spectacular trip. It was well over twenty years ago that I was there ,and I still have vivid memories of my visit.
High, cold and very scenic. A great ride for Will’s bucket trip.
Yeah 'broardmoor' in the UK is a bit different 🤣🤣
Absolutely love this series, keep it up man💪
Thanks! Will do!
Hehe Will is so funny and a great travel buddy!
I think so too!
We live in Colorado Springs and we ride the Cog Train to the summit at least once a year whenever visitors are here too. It is always as exciting asthe1st ride. Fall asleep coming back down every time too. You make the most enticing and educational videos we have ever watched. Thank you Mr. Downie Live.
Can't believe you are Ep.6 already 😲
Congratulations for your awesome video, me and my family enjoy your videos.👍👏
Thank you! 😃
Thank you for the trip to the top of Pike's Peak! Of all the many times I have traveled to Colorado, I have never been up there. You are really in for a treat on the Durango to Silverton train trip. I have traveled on that train multiple times, starting when I was about 10 or 11, in the 1950's (I am now 80). I was with my Grandmother the first time and the last time I took my 30 year old Grandson in 2015. I have ridden many trains in my day and the Durango/Silverton is by far the most scenic and well worth the time. I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I did the 7 or 8 times I have ridden it.
I haven't finished watching yet, but this episode is awesome! It's so nice to see you and your friend Will having a good time. Enjoying the views, the history and the company. That's what it's all about. I'm already looking forward to the next episode.
Great job, Mike!! Awesome content!! Each week gets better and better on exploring these magnificent trains!! Always enjoy seeing Will back for another adventure!! :)
You and Will are a great team!!!! Loved it!
Yes we are :)
When your in silverton. Go across the street and climb up the hill to the old mine. Great chill spot and a good hike. Also look up the story of the two silverton men who owned a shop and completely disappeared.
Spectacular views, a beautiful hotel, and a wonderful journey! But, the best things about this video are Will's joy and smiles. 🙂
Mike Downie needs his own Travel Channel series. How do we make that happen?
It's already happening, John! It's right here every Saturday! :)
@@DownieLive Touche! But I'm talking about THE TRAVEL CHANNEL! Where you can be seen by millions! I think the world at large needs to see your excellent content.
Silly factoid....Pike's Peak Cog Railway starts at 6320 feet, which is 32 feet HIGHER than Mt. Washington's summit.
We have good friend who's house is up above the Broadmoore. I have pictures from her back porch looking down at the hotel. She is also the last neighborhood before you reach the Cheyenne Mountain zoo. So there are time you can hear the large cats roar from her porch as well. I grew up there in Colorado Springs. It is a beautiful town and well worth spending some time in.
These episodes are great!
MY MAN WILL IS BACK... THE DYNAMIC DUO ONCE AGAIN UNITED. LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO
Love this! I rode the Cog in 2008 and my then 3 year old quietly laid on the ground once we reached the top from lack of oxygen! Luckily the gift shop pumps extra oxygen 😅! We were living in CO Springs at the time but she wasn’t ready for the thin air at the top. I’ve never been in the Broadmoor so that was fun to see. Thanks for the great content!
Thank you for the car ride up. My mother and grandmother took me on those ride almost 50 years ago. This is very nostalgic for me. I wasn't expecting to be so moved. I miss them so much.
Spencer Penrose, who owned all of the things talked about, also organized the first Pikes Peak Hill Climb, ie, The Race to the Clouds. It still takes place every summer. In the early days it always took place on Labor Day to get tourists to stay an extra day in the area.
Man this whole channel is some wholesome fun. It's been a lot of fun watching these videos
Love ❤️ being with you on all these trains! Thank you!!!
My pleasure!!
I love that your travels are not just about you but family and friends are integral. Well done, young man…well done.
My best friend ran the Pikes Peak Marathon and I am in such awe of her. Love you and Will, Mike!
Your videos and the content within are top shelf material. Better than anything on travel TV
Pikes Peak is also famous for the hill climb (and descent) races, which are pretty dangerous since it’s the same road, just with cars going well past the speed limit. An all electric VW has the fastest time up the mountain (just under 8 minutes!)
I've been watching alot of your videos and am currently working on the Across America series. I wanted to say that you are an extremely kind and generous person. I love the way you enjoy your mom and dad on your journeys
Wow, thank you!
I'm sooo jealous that you got to stay in the Broadmoor! It's so pretty. It's one of the places on my bucket list. Any recommendations on how to get a good rate there?
Hiked Pike's Peak (and a bunch of others) back in the summer of 1991. It was amazingly beautiful (we even walked through a cloud). I'm creating a travel bucket list for my kiddo and I (to take after I win the lottery). Thank you for sharing your adventures and experiences with all of us!
Sounds great! I hope you win!
The train is so fancy compared to when I rode it in 1957. The summit was socked in and it started to hale when we were on tge roof observation deck. I look forward to next week we also rode the Durango to Silverton train on that same trip. Thanks for visiting my childhood memories.
Very cool!
Took me a hot minute to remember why the Broadmore sounded familiar. I thought it was just ‘some hotel’ back in school when they had the Annual Colorado Music Educators Association Conference. I went once or twice to perform when I was in choir. Now I want to go back and see it as an adult.
All three in one day. How cool. I rode the cog railway as a kid on vacation. I have since driven up Pike's Peak in the last 10 years. Driving it is most definitely a scarier situation. I can't wait to see the next few adventures with your buddy.
I really dig Will as your travel buddy. You guys have a great chemistry.
Thanks 👍
More adventures with Will, looking forward to next week
Recently in May my family and I visited Colorado just to see the lovely sights. We drove up Pikes Peak 2hrs before close and upon reaching the top the train arrived at the top aswell! It was a crazy moment because I hadn't known about any of Pikes Peak prior to the trip! Seeing the ride up really made me feel like I was driving up Pike again!
Love that you guys did this, I was hoping you would on this series. I lived in Colorado Springs from 1986 to 2020. Made me very homesick. Spent a lot of time in Manitou, and the last time I drove up the Peak was in a radio station van to check a signal for a remote broadcast lol.
Love The Vintage Fashion Shot at 3:38 … The Broadmoor Resort, is truly a masterpiece.
So cool to see the Stadler train at Pikes Peak! Swiss power and engineering at its best.
Glad you decided to drive to the summit since the Cog Railroad couldn't. I did the Cog Railroad there in 2014 and got to the summit. Cars definitely look more modern. I'm a fan of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Imagine racing to the summit up that road!
Every week my case of train trip envy deepens. Love watching your adventures - my bucket list is growing
Great video! We lived in Colorado Springs back in our younger days and loved Manitiou Springs! (It's totally different now!) I am scared of going up the side of a mountain so we never went up by car BUT did take our grandson on the cog railroad and had a blast. I bought a can of oxygen (that I used) before we went up to the tops. The new visitor center was very nice!
Though I don't live there currently, I'm from Colorado... and I always forget just how many cool things there are to do there! It's been years since I've ridden the D&S or gone to Pike's Peak. And I love Manitou.... I have family members there that run some of the businesses in town... Garden of the Gods is another great attraction near Manitou. Can't wait for the next installment!
Another great video glad your friend Will had a great time his face expressions said it all see you next week
Can't wait!
I Rode this train on my 16th Birthday and it was such a great view absolutely awesome! The conductor of the trip was such a great guy I hope you get to meet him.
I got to ride this train for my 14th birthday and the views were absolutely incredible! Our conductor for the trip was a really great and funny guy and I really hope you got to meet him on your journey up the mountain! This railway truly is a one of a kind experience!
Michael.... so great of you as a friend to take your friend on his “bucket list”🌺🌺🌺💞💞💞
What can we say ... you ... are doing a fantastic job!!!! ( thank you for taking us with you again!!!)
Be well , safe and happy !!!
Your adopted family 💞💞💞🌺🌺🌺
Great experience! The trip was awesome from the scenery, hotel, the railway and then the drive to the peak. As always I like the knowledge you place in each video. Thank you for the invite on the trip!
Hey Mike, I'm Mike and just wanted to say I really enjoyed the videos with your mom and dad, I can see were you get your awesome personality from. Can't wait for the next video
Thanks again,
Mike
THAT LOOKED AWESOME! I think I like the car ride up ! As long as it’s a rental 😃 I have driven up Mt Washington in NH a few times and it’s hard on a vehicle. Great job Mike! 👍👍👍
