One thing to note when Elizabeth's helmet came off Meliodas gave off a surprised expression. And then in season three we learn that Meliodas he seen encountered Elizabeth over 100 times and had to watch here die. These encounters most likely ment he had to start the journey to save her. That surpised expression at very start of the series though small was a excellent addition by the author.

I find it somewhat hard to believe that Meliodas had a reduced power at the start I wonder what would have happened if he had his full power at the start
