Mastiff's are a large, giant breed that can cause large amounts of damage when allowed to jump up on people and must be something that is fixed quickly for the safety of the dog as well as the owner.

We have two German Shepherds, one is 7 years old and the other is 3 months. The 7 year old was well mannered but when together with the 3 month old she would pick up bad habits, especially on a lead and pulling. We ordered the spray and let me tell you the can is underrepresented on this video. It is REALLY loud and startling. They took notice IMMEDIETLY and didn't like the sound. Used in conjunction with a corrective command and it works really well. Well done and the spray worked for us.
Thanks for eliminating the stigma around the prong collar Will. I used one for my GSD with issues that was instrumental in getting her attention the first time before the correction with the prong collar and I never heard a yelp or a cry, it just another tool in the arsonal for dogs that need correction to become happier in their to short life.
Will just watched your video on DDB’s as a former owner I can say your analysis was 100% correct. Mine died of cancer at 5 years old which was heartbreaking and a terrible return on time invested. After watching your show for a year or so I have taken the plunge and booked a brindle Boerboel who will arrive in the UK aged 15 weeks in February. After watching your analysis my decision was based on the overall health, lifespan and temperament. My DDB started acting out at about 8 months what managed to turn him around was when he acted out I carefully push him to the floor and lay on top of him with my chest(supporting my weight with elbows) keeping him pinned underneath me till his heart rate went back to normal and he calmed down. He never stopped being naughty and crafty but he never tried to test me again and always followed instruction without having to raise my voice or my hand. As you know the Mastiffs are super sensitive and a ticking off for opening the fridge and eating all the contents lead to a 3 day sulk. The new pup is Ares(as in the Greek god of war and courage and son of Zeus) and look forward to bringing him to yours for some training in due course.
I have a rescue who was formerly feral. The first time I put a leash on her I had a bucking Bronco. She was puppy nipping with big girl teeth. My arms were black and blue, I looked like I was battered. I tried the air spray, she thought it was great fun. I tried the bitter apple sptay, she thought it was yummy. I then changed from a fabric leash, which to her was a chew toy, to a chain leash. It worked! Now she's a good girl that I can take on walks without being nipped.

This isn't a Bull Mastiff, it's a Dogue De Bordeaux which is much more recommended for first time guard dog owners than a Bull Mastiff, from what I've been told.

Awesome Will and my FAVOURITE breed I have one 10 months and not my first mastiff or big dog he actually seems small compared to my older boy but yes people have to start teaching them the rules as young as possible but pick up the training very quickly if you stay firm with it. Mine is turning out awesome and you and Jason Corey's videos have really helped because no matter how many dogs you have had you can always get suprises with new puppies. I do actually LOVE rough play with my mastiffs but with strict rules an 'out' and a lot of trust built and respect. It is not for everyone. I could not be without my dogs.
We as people love dogs, we bring them into our family, but we dont want to hurt their feelings. That's why we feel bad correcting them. But once we know that its just correcting them, not hurting them, we feel better.

Can definitely tell an improvement and going the right direction. However, the dog was still rejecting the owners authority. He wouldn't let her pet him on the head but had her go straight down his back to the tail. Sometimes a dog just wants a spot scratched but often when they do that they are rejecting your authority

Yep, what you let puppies get away with they'll continue doing as they're older. I'm sure this mastiff didn't learn out of thin air to jump up and nip at people. Don't wait until your dog is huge and hurting people to correct an unwanted behavior.

I have a one year old , same breed as this. She was a very mouthy puppy, and still loves to use her mouth, but has learned to be very gentle, and not put hands inside her mouth. She is still a bit jumpy though.. have to work on that:P lol

My first dog (and still is) is a Bordeaux Dog of now 76 kg. I went to puppy school with him mostly for socialice with other dogs and do some training. They told me never use a slip chain but a normal belt. Of course when I walk with him and he sees a cat or sometimes a dog he don't like I have to use some strenght to hold him, but for the rest he is friendly to people and we have never had any problems with him at home. But I advice when you get a BDD go to a puppy school and learn to train a big dog like this. When they are young they learn a lot then they are older.

I have a kangal approximately 2 years old, that formulates the same and worse behavior perhaps I tried what you suggest with the spray but with no real result once I didn't have it with me it started the same behavior what else can I do

Finding an effective correction strategy is so important. My preference is the squirt bottle which most dogs hate luckily. A punisher should work straight away and drastically reduce the behaviour after the first rep. If it doesn't try something else.

This is my male 8 month old Dogue de Bordeaux to a T. We have been training him since we got him but this won’t stop 😫
Then follow this carefully. And really pay attention to the correction being stronger than the behavior. Without that this doesn’t work.
Hey Will, I've got a 7 month Labrador retriever and he is becoming a little grumpy lately.
He growls at me in different occasion specially when he's eating his bones or when he's relaxing by my side and I try to touch him.
I usually tell him off so he goes to his bed and then I praise him with a treat but apparently this is not working.
Any tips on that?

I need your help do badly 😢 I don't want to give up on my new older puppy Bordeaux rescue. But I can't live like this anymore 😢I have hadbhim exactly 2 months today. Im trying not to give up on him. Because I know this breed is amazing ❤but being mouthed way way worse then this video. If I correct him he lunges and mouths but it's more of a bite. I have bruises scraps and cuts. Im a chronic pain patient due to a spine injury. Im so scared he's going to really hurt me or someone else. 😢I'm losing patience and just want to give up but deep inside that's not who I am as a person. I love him but it's starting to become a horrible living situation and I'm not enjoying my DDB at all😢 HELP HELP PLEASE. I also have a trainer that comes weekly
So does this work also for if the dog jumps up on the counter as well as people can he be taught the same way not to do it for when he doesn't respond to verbal commands at all
Where can I buy an air canister? My Staffi waves her muzzle around with her mouth open and snags my arm with her teeth causing a 1”-2” rip in my forearm . She is six months old and over sixty pounds. What do you do when they are Mouthing so badly and when you are correcting them they lung and mouth you like actually biting now??????? 😢 because they hate being corrected. Im doing all the mental stimulation my trainer told me to do. It was helpful but it only last for so long

The SSS sound is very interesting. In audio recording ,a sound engineer has to watch out for sibilance as as can easily overload microphone signals. I Ve used the sharp Ssss on lots of animals. Interestingly with humans we have a similar behaviour. We say Sh or Shush ,it's usually spoken in a higher frequency.
Songwriters should be wary of too many S words.

Where did you get that air can spray 🤔🤔🤔, I don't have a problem with my Cane Corso, but I can use it to correct him, first with the can, then with the sound of it with my mouth.

I have been watching your vdos on how to handle dog pulling leash and to walk him loose leash. I tried your technique with my 1.8 years old Labrador and it seems to work well. He is walking much better and hopefully we will he able to have a comfortable relaxing walk. I meant he still get excited with things around him eg. Squirrels, feral cats and most problematic thing - bicycles. Do you have any vdo on dogs jumping on bicycles? I actually sent him to a one month dog training school but it didn’t work at all.

We have a very confident independent male guard dog breed (GSD) who has the most lovely temperament and I know will make the most wonderful companion. He is 6 months old and we are having real troubles with biting, really similar to this case! It is starting to affect everyone's welfare, and I am also pregnant so I want to nip it now before it gets more dangerous.. Is he too young to try your prong collar tips and advice?
No he is not too young to learn manners. Meaning that negative actions has negative consequences. It is of the utmost importance to use this tool correctly though, as if used wrong, it may make things worse and not better.
Will can you help please I have a 1 year old amstaff and he’s become very aggressive for food and guarding his food to the point I can’t go into my kitchen when he’s aggressive.

Hello and thanks for your videos.. I am currently working with my dog and would like to add the air can. Would tell me the name of the product or where to find it. His jumping and nipping is getting out of control he is only 7 months and I real want it to stop.
Will this work for barking Chihuahuas, I’ve been following your food/walking methods which have changed my dogs soooo much ( not just the puppy but also my 5 year old) got sit/stay beautiful recall and even door barking perfect just struggling with them both going crazy at other dogs and yes the 5 year old acts very aggressive at this point .

@@Ryan-re1rs how to stop pulling using techniques on harness, collar, slip leads etc and not just prong collar solves all kind of response
It is important to find a prong collar that has the prongs rounded off so as they pinch but DO NOT cut as some $10 versions of this collar will do. Simply feel the prongs yourself, are the tips rounded over or are they blunt and not finished ? My experience has been you will usually need to spend $35-$40 bucks and the good ones I have seen seem to be German made and not the unfinished prongs that are found on the Chinese made. As the professional says, try it on yourself before you put it on your dog and remember you get what you pay for and like me I'm sure you want the best for your beloved dog.

Hello! I’ve just found your videos and really love them! It’s clear you truly love dogs and you have a gift for sharing information in a relatable, easily absorbed manner. I have a question with using the air spray as my 18 month old Sheltie spent the first 5 of those months in a crate until we saved him. He’s a wonderful dog-extremely loving, happy, energetic, and playful. The only issues are from not getting socialization and exposure to stimulus/people/animals during that key period. He’s easily startled and becomes anxious when exposed to new things, and his reaction tends to be excessive barking. Because he becomes instantly upset/startled is the air spray a good correction method? He completely trusts me, and I don’t want to cause fear if that makes sense.
It sounds like he’s behaving anxiously because he feels like he’s in charge and is trying to keep everyone safe. If you watch Will’s engagement drills you should hopefully see a change towards a dog that looks towards you for guidance rather than to protect. When he sees you’re relaxed, calm and in charge, he should become less stressed when confronted by “threatening” things.
@@thejames666 Ahh, ok. I’ve seen the changes in the drills as you mentioned, but never considered that as the reasoning because the reaction is fearful. He’s overcome a lot so far, he’s much more confident and reacts to considerably less things, but I’ve kind of hit a wall lately in what’s left to work on. But barking is a sign of anxiety/fear… rather than the puppy-ish boisterousness/anti-social behaviour shown by this mastiff. I don’t believe your dog needs to be corrected… just shown that he has nothing to fear. Make him proud and confident and he won’t go into a show on your behalf. Best of luck!!
Having owned a Sheltie, they are natural barkers. They bark at movement. They bark in play. They bark when they herd. They certainly bark from fear.
I would continue to work the engagement lessons. I would also work on correcting that barking as a separate issue.

One trainer I will watch always some of the best advice on RUclips would love to meet you as I’m never done any dog training course but trained many dogs use a lot of techniques similar but really want to expand my knowledge so I can help rescued dog as always the worry being bitten if they been badly miss treated what would your advice be about where to get the knowledge to be able to training and knowledge for this. Or even a change in Career to become a full time dog trainer as my love is dogs

We tried using a prong collar to correct our 9 month bull terrier and unfortunately it was just making him even more aggressive . I gave him a correction with it once in the kitchen and he snapped at me. Maybe I’ll try that spray.
I'm no expert but my experience with my puppy is that she is very sensitive and her feelings get hurt easily. It's always better to guide with praise and save corrections on that level for dangerous behaviour. If your dog snaps at you then that dog fears and feels threatened by you. I think you need to repair some trust.
@@TyloreKing It could be fear and distrust.. It could also be a hormonal teen dog establishing dominance, and testing the limits of what he may do and get away with.
Snapping is certainly NOT a thing a dog should get away with, but one should know the state of mind of the dog, to decide how to deal with it.
The prong can antagonise some dogs in some situations. You might try the e-collar, but it's not something you just put on and start correcting strongly with, ideally. It should be an extension of you and your relationship with the dog. I would introduce it and teach the dog with it properly first. The e-collar is less likely than the prong to aggravate them when you correct them. Some dogs, especially more dominant ones, may redirect on you after a correction if they think they can put you in your place, but that's not necessarily what this was. You may not have respect from your dog at this moment, but structure and proper e-collar training can cultivate that in a pretty non-confrontational way.

I breed red and black mask DDB’s this boy almost looks like one of mine. If this was in North America there would be a good chance he was from my boy Ruca’s bloodlines. His pups are all over the place which is pretty cool since he’s not around anymore. I have two of his great grandsons too.
I think a dog treadmill will help the dog get some energy out.

It's not about the size of the dog. Dog training is a skill that requires knowledge of the temperament/psyche of the species and the individual dog in front of you.
@@annemariecullen3650 right...and she lacks all that. And this dogs a bruiser. And its a dangerous mix. She didnt need him to guard a jewelry store she needed a pet. So why not a schnauzer? At least theres no risk of the postman getting his scalp torn off?
@@RC-bl2pm I see your point and I understand the genetics, but the dog was being playful and there was no history of aggression. Plus, the owner sought help. We all start somewhere and we only stop learning when we decide we know everything (that’s not aimed at you). Ivan Balabanov calls that stage being “unconsciously incompetent.” Will is an excellent teacher and the owner did a great job of learning.

I used a anti bark collar with the spray. Oh it was such a wonderful method of correction. No more late night barks for no reason other than she wanted to go for a midnight stroll
Edit: it only took one night and if she growls in the middle of the night I just show her the collar and she is submissive and well behaved.
I have a mastiff cross, she jumps but because she loves everyone, just can't get on top of it 😭

Hi Will I rescued a Neo Mastiff girl and she arrived yesterday. The only issue that has come to light so far is she seems to be stopping my other rescue boy from now coming near me. She warns him away with either a growl or quick snap. I am reading when she starts to tense up but what can I do to stop all together. My boy I have only had him three months and he is dog friendly but is becoming hesitant to come where I am. He is a Neo Mastiff cross German Shepherd and will be three next month. The girl is six months younger. I have previously had German Shepherds and Rottweilers but have learnt that each new dog just shows you there is still more to learn. I appreciate any ideas on what I can try to sort out this situation before it becomes more serious than a snap.
Structure. You just got her yesterday, so the two dogs shouldn't be randomly mingling at this point. You haven't built a relationship with her yet and you don't have any influence over her actions to be able to intervene if she starts acting out the way she is doing. I don't know if she's resource-guarding you or trying to protect you from the other dog, but either way she likely sees you as weak right now. I would work with her one-on-one first so that way if she does do something unwanted you have the clout to tell her to knock it off and leave the situation rather than bullying your other dog. Some people do just put the dogs together and sort out problems as they come up, but that means a much bigger chance of something going wrong should the dog ignore your correction or challenge you.
She's resource guarding you, and that should not be accepted. I would recommend going to beckmans dog training RUclips site and watching his videos on that. Super helpful
