- An overhead clear shot in badminton is a fundamental stroke used to drive the shuttlecock high and deep into the opponent's court. It is primarily used to regain positioning, push the opponent to the backcourt, or set up offensive plays.
Types of Overhead Clears
1. Attacking Clear
Hit flatter and faster to pressure the opponent.
Aimed at the back boundary line but with less height.
Often used to maintain an aggressive rally.
2. Defensive Clear
High and deep, giving more time to recover.
Ideal when under pressure or out of position.
Steps to Execute an Overhead Clear
1. Positioning
Stand slightly sideways with your non-racket foot forward.
Position yourself behind the shuttlecock to strike it in front of your body.
2. Grip
Use a forehand grip for power and control.
3. Preparation
Raise your racket arm and non-racket arm (for balance).
Rotate your shoulders and hips, turning slightly away from the net.
4. Execution
Swing your racket overhead with a full arm motion.
Contact the shuttlecock at the highest point, slightly in front of your body.
Snap your wrist for extra power and control.
5. Follow-through
Allow your racket to continue downward after hitting the shuttlecock.
Return quickly to your ready position.
Key Tips
Timing: Ensure you hit the shuttlecock at its highest point.
Footwork: Move efficiently to position yourself for the shot.
Relaxation: Keep your grip firm but relaxed to avoid tension.
