- On the surface, Star Wars Outlaws is a dream come true for franchise fans. It's an open-world third-person shooter that embraces the space scoundrel fantasy that defines characters like Han Solo, set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. With Massive Entertainment of The Division 2 fame onboard, it should be a slam-dunk.
However, every new reveal makes it feel more generic and formulaic than anticipated. Granted, no one has fully explored the breadth and scale of the title or experienced the entire story, but there's something about the gameplay that's just not clicking, at least not like the best titles in the franchise have. What exactly is going on?

@@damienscanlon5585 I mean this is supposed to be a game, so gameplay is the problem more, but if you wanna good story, you want to explore the fantasy setting rules, not install them to your own or make a complination of clips like tiktok feed. So gaming or this game gives us the aanswer why it's crap, cause the mechaanics are just mechanics, devs think are good mechanics, not good Star Wars mechanics, like exploring how the force works, until Disney has written every logic and reasoning out of it.
Also, how would people with no force powers actually react or fight back and how unfair it is and so need discpline and so fort. All this knowledge how stories are written have been throwed away, cause Harry Potter brought "just win" to story telling and made a killing. Stories for idiots are not stories for children, just for idiots,as trying to tell no one ever dies and other lies or make a world where no one dies and sell that idea logically, so it has rules.
So a good story in fantasy setting is, exploring the mechanics and rules why it would be logical, like you can only make babies one way in ours, but as we are arguing about that in the real world, no logic can live in fantasy either, cause that means everyone would undestand, you can only make babies one one way.
So in limbo we are, to that time everyone understands what is possible and what is foolish or detrimental, but also, keeps what one wants driving him/her self, not everyone else, cause rules are boring and we need to break them to live, but not so much we break the world.

@@damienscanlon5585 the idea for THIS story is absolutely amazing. A story set in the time of the empire as a smuggler. The issue is it looks completely garbage. Gameplay, writing, characterisations, graphics etc etc. It all looks bad, which is the issue. Give this concept to CDPR or Larian or oldschool Bioware, and as long as they dont mess up the release i guarantee they'd make an exceptional game. This game just looks like garbage.
This is one of those games I won't bother with until it goes on sale. I'm fully expecting a disastrous launch

I remember when they showed 'Watch Dogs' at E3 and it looked beautiful, then the actual game's textures looked much blurrier and rough around the edges.
This is giving that. Star Wars Outlaws promised one thing and is delivering a much watered down product that almost looks like an unfinished beta.

It's like developers these days hype "AAA" games so much that they rely on the pre orders to cover costs and to make profit.
Then shortly after launch games get discounted, it's really a sad state for the gaming industry.
I think Star Wars generally has about 80% male fans. Making your protagonist an uninteresting female with a Muppet-like pet just kills it for me. If I envisioned an edgy, smuggler, open-world SW game, it wouldn't have those two. Maybe I'm a minority of male players but I really don't like playing female characters either. I really like women, I just don't want to be one.
It's not about the character being a woman for me it's just the fact they made such an uninteresting character with a goofy sidekick that they're gonna make toys of instead of giving us a mandalorian

its a MASSIVE game so they should be able to show us at least a 30 minute gameplay clip that includes inventory menus or character customization screens.

You should never pre-order a ubisoft title to begin with, as it will be on sale in a month anyway, but on top of that there is no doubt this will be a 6 or 7 out of 10 at best. There are so many other games coming out that I guarantee you would enjoy more
I think a bounty hunter angle would have done better for the format of the game, but I'll wait and see how it turns out. A bounty hunter doing contracts for various syndicates and the empire makes sense for all the reputation and heat from the empire a little more intense. That and the customization of a bounty hunter is endless.
I think most of the criticisms are warranted. When Ubisoft is giving us the 1st triple-A, open-world Star Wars game, but they have crazy pre-order prices with a season pass and mission hidden behind a paywall. They are exploiting the fan base through marketing tactics. Hoping gamers' inner fan will make them buy it all out of FOMO. The best thing to do is not pre-order. People who do that are only inviting this model to continue for games.
A more fringe "any way you like it" approach would have been cool. Sure you can be a smuggler... or a bounty hunter.. or a privateer... or a mercenary.

I don't understand why people are even doing preorders anymore? Most, if not all AAA games seem to be unfinished buggy messes, and it takes months to patch them up (aka actually finish them), and that's if we're lucky they don't abandon it two months after the lunch.
Imagine buying a new car and they forget to put wheels, engine, breaks and windows, and then go "Oh right, we'll deliver this to you in next two years". This behavior is only allowed in gaming industry, and if they have time to make dozen DLCs day 0, then they sure should have time to actually finish and playtest the game. These are not small indi games made by like one or four dudes, this are big budget games being made by like dozen people.

Ubisoft is becoming known for their beautiful games, with a lack of depth. Both this game and AC shadows should have been on top of my wishlist, but I am afraid they will disappoint.

And it was not difficult to make it better. They just had to let you create your character and let you be wherever you want in a RPG style, be it a soldier, a mercenary or a force sensitive. There, a Star Wars fantasy game everyone wanted and with replayability. Bug God forbid these publishers making great games now and giving the audience what they want.
I have this theory that this particular element is not actually the game dev studios fault or choice. I believe the "you will play a very specific character with a very specific story" format of all the Star Wars games in the past years (Battlefield being a shooter is a different animal see?) is a Disney mandate. They're going for some weird holistic IP model with all their stuff (this is why even things in their real world theme park are supposedly "canon") and they don't really understand the gaming industry and are mandating this same approach here.

Id want a Star Wars game where you level up as a padawan into a master. Create your own character and go through your trials. Endgame dlc will be new adventures, conflicts and threats. Investigations, confrontations and side quests to help villagers and animals. Some side work for the republic if you may choose... depending on your status. Just my idea. Simple, yet fun as fuck to me. Massive game but why not take a shot

So this is Massive. They did The Division and The Division 2, which personally I think is the best Ubisoft franchise. So I was very excited for this. Massive, Snowdrop engine, open world Star Wars. What I am not seeing is builds, character progression, skills, leveling. You can equip all manner of guns for mission in The Division 2, or run around in the open areas equipped or built a variety of ways, so it would be fun to do that here in this open world, but here you have a blaster, and can only pick up a found weapon and use it a bit before tossing it. I don't think there is any real weapon build variety, progression, builds. In Horizon's open world, you can run around and level, and gain parts to craft more things to use in the story missions. Here, in this open world, if there is no progression and builds, I am not sure what you do? There's a part of me that feels like they missed out on about half of the game, at least when you compare to something like The Division 2. If it is more story based, say like Uncharted, and we have all of these factions, do faction choices significantly change the story, and that is where replayability comes from. Is there NG+? It is quite possibly a one and done, but that, honestly, was not what I was wanting.
Your comment makes me think of something just in general that bugs me about Star Wars games in the Disney era: why do they only think there are basically two options for Star Wars gameplay? Jedi or Smuggler?
@@ironwolf56 Yeah, I knew the limitations when this was announced. Character creation, choose a class, build a character, explore the galaxy, have multiple playthroughs with different experiences? We weren't going to get a BG3 version of Star Wars, unfortunately. At least I was somewhat excited about Star Wars meets the Division. Surely Massive could make smuggler life really interesting. It looks very linear though in terms of options and choices, even if it is an open world. And yes, it is a little disappointing too, like you say, we can't expand on what's available as a concept.

Ubisoft is so money hungry, I'm left to wonder if the studio is going broke and they need the money. No other gaming company is this thirsty to sap our money from us like this intentionally. They get complaints from their buyers but still do it? There has to be a money issue at Ubisoft. Look at EA, its the same story
Even Suicide Squad, Flintlock, Concord, Forspoken, and all those other games we loved to hate had their supporters. There were people backing those games, and approving of the overwhelming mediocrity.
Problem is there's only a handful of those people. Props to them for laying down on the barbed wire for their favorite multi-billion-dollar corporations... but those games failed financially for a reason. Not enough fart-catchers.
Ubisoft has the resources to make an amazing game. All they need to do is:
-not rush
-stop using their same generic game formula
-go back to the drawing board
The issue is nowadays if a game isn’t a 10/10 masterpiece, people say it’s trash and a flop. There’s no in between anymore, it’s either a 100% flawless game with the best gameplay, story, and graphics ever seen, or it’s utter garbage that doesn’t deserve to exist. I miss the old days when gamers were just excited for something new, and not so cancerous

The bigger these games are, the farther apart they need to be. It's easier to saturate the market when you make your games so big they become a slog by the end. That's part of the issue. Star Wars fatigue (and quality) is definitely part of the issue. The game visually looking "blah" is absolutely part of the issue. The experience looking all too familiar is part of the issue for sure. But, ultimately, it just doesn't look very fun. Everything feels kind of lethargic. The vehicles, the enemy ai, the combat in general... it's all just really low energy for some reason.
I know a ton of work went into this game from a lot of people, but I agree with the video here: I just don't see the soul in it. It's paint by numbers, Star Wars: The Open World. A license slapped on a genre. A corporate decision, not a creative one. And it shows.

I just tried for an hour the trial if it on ps5, it seems nice enough, just could run better wven on performance mode.
I barely started the open world part after a slow start.
Hope outlaws surprises and is great in the end, id love a game like it, and its charm a humor is likeable enough for me.

I hope PSSR in PS5 Pro will help much for PS5 Pro, PSSR like DLSS 3 with frame generation but not like DLSS 3.5 with ray tracing.
PS5 runining low/medium with low ray tracing for 2077, this make me disappointed about PS5. I play PS5 for the graphics not far from PC like Genshin Impact and more.
And I never touch Starwars Survivor and Spiderman 2, I will play when PS5 Pro launch.

Ubisoft should have a studio devoted to licensed IP if they want to keep going this route. If they could get a few people from Ghost Recon, Division, Far Cry, The Crew teams & let them all cook together on the different systems. Combat, story, driving, stealth…all would be covered well under sub teams with a specific niche. $70-$130 for anything less than a sub par *LICENSED IP* is a waste of money, resources, and brand friendliness. Avatar game always on sale. They need to do better.

If this was a Han Solo game, it would have made sense in how it looks and plays. Not sure why they went with a new bland character. If they wanted new characters, then let just people create their own outlaw, and use Division 2 build and progress mechanics.
There is a pall of negativity overlaying popular culture and entertainment, from movies and TV, to games and even comics. Everything is at least flawed, if not downright bad in concept or execution, or is somehow at least hobbled by "agenda," or is politically skewed. The worst thing is, they can just delay a game months before and give them time to sort out graphics, I bet everything is ready and just needs a graphic touch up, this game could be amazing but it’s not getting much love and care when it come to the graphics
I don't understand why people are so shocked by this. This is Ubisoft's MO. They lure viewers in with over the top, cinematic gameplay and trailers and then downgrade it, hoping we don't take notice. This game is doomed to flop.

Been done with star wars for years and been done with ubisoft , so this is an epic nope for me 🎉
Ubisoft would do better if they slashed the priced by 50% and then maybe have good sales .
For 3rd person games they could try what FiFa football has already tried. Offer different styles of view. Maybe a 3rd person camera that was more cinematic could be good. The 3rd person camera is functional for aiming so maybe aim would just switch to an aiming view. A different camera style for showing off the landscape when not fighting would be interesting. The ps5 is missing some innovation. A lot of these games are very similar
All I’m gonna say is never judge a book by its cover. It’s a game has not fully been released yet and it still has couple weeks. Probably a little bit more than that to get fixed. Remember, the game is a demo and not full release yet

You know any game could say that an alien golden MONKEY discovered the US, right? It is ficction, nobody is trying to rewrite history, snowflake.
It’s too expensive for the already weary and skeptical Star Wars Fans, and doesn’t have anywhere near the main stream appeal of the usual Ubisoft big title that a Star Wars title might have once pulled (that pull was exagerated to sell off the Franchise to Disney in the first place. Its core audience is the summer blockbuster crowd, the sci-fi fantasy fans were a merchandising force multiplier Lucas’ use of was his real genius.)

Honestly I haven't run into anyone who's waiting for either. I've seen nothing but people who're pissed about yasuke in shadows being completely the opposite of who he historically was and outlaws being bland and boring as hell.
This game is full of issues, but one of the biggest mistakes is that the protagonist should have been Han Solo. Not some random ugly chick.

Yea got me worried abt Assassins creed shadows. I stopped rly caring abt Ubisoft games for a good while now, but shadows (minus the dialogue sometimes) actually looked somewhat promising, but I absolutely forgot Ubisoft does that downgrading bs. Rainbow six siege was one of the best ones

This is gonna be another unoptimized game on launch, they're downgrading the graphics to compensate for their incompetence to actually fix the issue, they should just drop denuvo/DRM. Also, SW Jedi survivor 1 year later still runs like shit.

I don’t think they understand how many players they are going to lose from not having a male playable character. Me and 3 others friends have already chosen against this.

The problem is ubisoft now I have played many ubisoft games some great some good and some bad but in the last few years they have kept to mostly re-skins and with the AC controversy this year it has to many projects in the works my main hope is outlaws is just fancy testing grounds to show off how beyond good and evil 2 could be if it ever comes out.
110% need to fix a bunch of soft glitches like water animations, lighting animations, and explosion animations. And there doesn't seem like enough com at options to keep me interested through a huge open world game.
They should have titled Ahsoka as "Star Wars Rebels Season 5" and it would have done better.

Breakpoint is a gem and one of the best militaristic shooter in decades, Valhalla was surprisingly fun and for me being a fan of assassin’s creed, I didn’t mind the change up and its superior to Mirage and its terrible A.I. and lackluster “story” delivery. Once Outlaws was announced being made by Massive I knew it was going to be a failure, if you don’t get the $130 version they leave out main content and they even say, “Includes upcoming DLC”; wtf is that?? Includes something sometime, take our word for it. 😂
Ubisoft is incapable of making a good game
I never played demos and I've been playing games for a long ass time. IGN always has something to say about games I think. Ubisoft will work out the glitches before the game comes out on August 30th. That is just my opinion

This game looks awesome to me. Literally the only game on the PS5 I'm looking forward to putting hours into in 24 atm. Can't believe the the amount of people trying to destroy the game before it's even out. Can't wait to play it, going to do me best to enjoy the hell out of it as well.
