This song has always mystified me and after watching you show me how it is played..... I find myself even MORE mystified that he was able to write this... and then sing and play it live... There will never be another Elliott Smith 😭😭😭
I've never subscribed and hit like so fast. Elliott Smith's work deserves the care and dedication you are putting into it. A full song book to preserve and teach his beautiful music to future generations is importance that cannot be overstated. Good work and godspeed.
Good god what a beautiful song. And that shaker sound in the back ground of his recording Thanks for making these. I’m glad to know someone geeks about his guitar work as I do
I know you’re all about doing your own music, and you should be. But I think you’ve hit a real niche with your Elliott project, I feel like you’d be excellent at breaking down his stuff for people looking to get into him/understand him.
Trying to figure out your finger-thumb tricks at .25x speed is definitely a trip. I watched the first run through and courageously thought I could probably nail about half the song in a session. I think I got halfway through the intro 😂😂😂
Dude thanks so much for the tuning information, I had tried to play this by ear and I had it set to drop D then a full step down and I just couldnt quite place it. Now I can nail it with your help!
I have just bought the digital version of your Book. It's a must have. It's well done and is a necessary additional to your excellent videos. Also it"s super affordable. A great way to thank you for the tremendous amount of time. For all guitarist who are ESD lovers, this is a great great investments. MANY THANKS. Vincent. (oh, and please ... an Eother / Or project would be SO great).
They're waking you up to close the bar The street's wet, you can tell by the sound of the cars The bartender's singing "Clementine" While he's turning around the open sign "Dreadful sorry, Clementine" Though you're still her man It seems a long time gone Maybe the whole thing's wrong What if she thinks so and just didn't say so? You drank yourself into slow-mo Made an angel in the snow Anything to pass the time And keep that song out of your mind Oh, my darling Oh, my darling Oh, my darling, Clementine Dreadful sorry, Clementine Dreadful sorry, Clementine
What a champion! ❤ Any chance of a short (slower) clip to demo how you pick out the melody while keeping the strumming going? Brain and hands will not cooperate. Keep those fine tunes a coming.
You sure that’s the right chord at 0:59? Could swear he adds a D there on 4th string 2nd fret. Looks like he does it in the live performance on the Breakfast Time show too.
You're right, good catch! I noticed that when I was putting together the songbook. I'm releasing a wrap-up vid soon for this Self-Titled series that will go over a few other mistakes ! !
Thanks so much, Miles. Got this in decent condition now. Will record it and then finally change the tuning of my guitar XD One thing I like to do in the verse (at 0:55 and 2:00) - instead of the 3-2-0 fill, do 2-3-4 - but instead of 4 you'd just play the open string underneath (B string tuned down to A). Sounds good now and again, wonder if ES would approve(!) Cheers and extend the project for all albums!
@@tomelliott4576 haha no worries! m3 = minor 3rd, M3 = Major 3rd. I was talking about the cool notes you use, 3-4 fret on the C string is Eb-E. The song's in C, and Eb is the m3, E is the M3. That move from Eb to E (m3 to M3) is a really cool sound and he uses it too as a tag at the end of his live performances!
@@_E_S_P you keep on teaching me - Jedi master. It reminds me a little of how he ends other songs live, like how Tomorrow, Tomorrow collapses in a beautifully slowed down heap
Thank you for making this playlist! This is one of my favorites. I've been playing it in a standard tuning in C. This is so much more complex and fun. If you have any PDFs of the chords, I'd love to get a copy. Not on this album, but could you do one for "Tomorrow, Tomorrow"?
Hey! Got my guitar all fixed and immediately wanted to learn this one, got most of it down, but the strumming is killing me. Could you help with some tips for the strumming, or is it just a me problem lmao
The classic practise and listen guys. Just keep playing and playing and playing and you’ll naturally become better at deciphering where the little picky parts are just with your ears. Also like the uploader said watching Elliot play it live can help too. Requires patience of course, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you really wanna learn it. Good luck!
His right hand technique is definitely the most challenging part of many of his songs! I go over it more in my other videos, so check those out. I’m not actually doing it quite right in this video - it was early in the project and I got better. The short answer is down strum with your thumb and up with your pointer finger. And a lot of patient practice! The details take time.

He was the master of tone and melody, learning his stuff makes one a better guitarist

@@evaozmaAlex g is more built to spill than Elliott smith. Great but I don’t see much of a comparison

Thank you so much! That is exactly the feeling that motivated me to make this, I'm so glad you found it
So thankful that someone with your talent has taken the time to preserve these. A hero.
Wow- your project is immense! Much respect
Elliott songs are insane. Dudes the rhythm and lead guitarist at the same time
I’m so very glad the RUclips decided to show me this. Thank you very much for doing this project.

Nice cover, think it’s gotta be my favourite Elliott Smith song. Would you mind sharing what guitar you have?
definitely! it's a little martin LX1
Is this a good beginner song? It looks really hard.. but I just want to hear from other people.
You’re better off starting with something easier (ie. with less movement) like Between the Bars or Waltz #2. This is probably intermediate+
🎉
What guitar do you play on?
What’s the tuning?

After following this guide: indexing is broken and my gpu reboots while playing fortnite
Why guitar is this? Kind looks like a Taylor baby, but with nylons?
it's a weird one, it's a little martin LX1. With steel strings!
the song is actually out of tune a bit
I think elliott plays it a whole step down
he played it on a guitar that kept going out of tune
