The Sumo Wrestlers physique is deceiving to those that don't know about the sport. While yes, they are bigger/fatter than one might think a standard professional athlete's body normally is, but Sumo wrestlers are still incredibly strong, while still being incredibly flexible. And like Jet said they are bigger to prevent from grabbing the Mawashi (the belt) and cushion from blows and falls....but also the point of the sport is to move the other wrestler to the ground or out of the dohyo (ring), and the more mass you have the harder it is to move you.
