This is what I call “Real Railroading” !!! I come here every year on my vacation & love ❤️ the train 🚂 action here !!! Although I’m from the Midwest home of railroads, the NEC is my favorite 🤩 !!!
I've rode on the Metroliner once or twice and am old enough to have seen the GG-1 in active service so my appreciation for this uploaded can not be overstated! Thank You for this!
Great video! Brings back memories. I miss the low platforms. As a kid, I'd ride my bike there and enjoy the show but I don't recall the GG1s. I think I missed them on the NEC by a year or two, or they weren't what I was looking for (my version as a kid was the TYCO brown one with incorrect wheels). Everything else I saw. Except an Arrow blowing through the station - I've never seen one not stop at Princeton Junction! I also remember the pre-Arrow Dinky!
I think those are Arrow II's. Arrow IIIs didn't get single-arm pantographs until the 2010s, and these have one smaller air scoop at each corner of the cab rather than the Arrow III's one big one over the end door. They still would have been pretty new at the time...and yes, I have to agree the Arrows are still NJT's best trains.
Great parade of trains, and a fantastic shot of a plain bearing on fire at 5:45. May be caused by a lack of lubrication or the cotton packing in the journal box being wrapped around the end of the axle.
Fantastic video of a unique part of American railroading history! :D I was just wondering, would it be possible for me to use this footage as part of an upcoming documentary I'm creating about the history of the Budd Metroliner?
I spent many a day at Princeton Jct between 1974-76, Look at the variety, something that is amiss today. There were at least 14 long distance trains a day with a mixed bag of heritage equipment pulled by GG1's and E60's. All that mixed in with freight trains and bolted rail.
What’s interesting is that by this time or around this time the tracks north of New Haven were either being rebuilt or had been rebuilt/realigned to accommodate higher speed trains and is what makes up the current alignment and tracks. All the current tracks and makes of the ties were laid in the 70’s because Amtrak planned on introducing high speed service. Obviously that didn’t happen for another 20-25 years
Correct me if I'm wrong, but they did have the Metroliner service back then - or was it only NY to DC? For some, it was the extreme version of "taking the train to work".
This is the stretch they did speed runs on in the 1960s. In 1965 the Metroliner prototype did 168, I think. The turbo train exceeded 170 through here as well.
@@RailroadMediaArchive I doubt the difference was that big. I found a sample time table from 1972... transitism.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/screen-shot-2015-06-01-at-10-37-19-pm.png
Well, of course the GG-1 predates Amtrak. Most of them were built the shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Where had you thought they came from...? Amtrak had a real learning experience in trying to replace the GG-1; the E-60 did not have the high speed tracking characteristics that Amtrak needed.
Back when the railroad was fun. 4 guys, the Engineer drunk off of his ass, the Fireman whos running for the drunk Engineer, the Conductor who's stoned, and the Brakeman whos high on PCP. 4 guys and about half a million dollars a year in pay between them in a time when a Rolex cost $250. Ah, they lived the dream.
The iconic braking sound of the amfleets. Still the same to this day
When you hear that braking sound you know those are Amtrak coaches, such a shame they will be replaced in the couple years.
5:40 Man riding a "Hot Box" tanker like a BOSS!!!!!
1:45 OMG that Metroliner horn, holy "sour horns," Batman! Sounds like someone sat on some geese! 😂😂
Truly historic footage. It really shows how long those Amfleets have been around. That's when rolling stock and nearly everything was built to last.
Nice to see those Metroliner EMU's!! Thanks for sharing this
Amazing seeing the Arrows so shiny.
I’m amazed that the Amfleets are still run in present day and how much has changed 50 years later

Fantastic! Love seeing old classic videos in color and a bonus with the actual live recordings! Love it!!
It's not "video". It's FILM. There are some significant differences between the two.
The E60s had nice horns.
So did the GG1& METROLINERS!! ALL THREE OF THEM DID IN MY OPINION!!!! Earl of EL BARRIO,NYC,NY 12:02AM.1/9/23
Fun that these same Amfleets today are serving about as long as the GG1s were in the 70s.
7:21 looks like Amtrak No. 10000, the former Adolphus business car running platform first. Great video!

So lovely. So weird seeing paper being kicked around.. Just love the electric conrail don't think i ever saw that before
The Amtrak metro liner horn is so master 3:53

10:28 this sounds like a Indian railway locomotive
Pretty amazing that those amfleet’s are still serving commuters in the Northeast to this day
7:26 Shiny new Arrow IIIs, crazy that these are still 44 years later. Lowkey the best NJT train. In those times they were NJDOT.

Couldn't agree more
I love the shiny Amtrak cars!

5:26 CR 2233 -- same engine restored and on display at RR Museum of PA?
When I was a kid I always wanted to ride the Metroliner but never got to.
I was hoping there would be a shot of the Dinky in here.

That Brakeman is keeping an eye on the wheel bearing it seems

But good it got started early knowing Amtrak and it’s history 😂

@floydjohnson7888 the wires only went to new haven until the 90s
From a classic to the best spot on the NEC
Great classic Amtrak cars
Very nice, GG-1 footage
this station looks so different back then it had more rough looking tracks but now we have the smooth tracks and trains speeding fast at 150 mph
This is the stretch they did speed runs on in the 1960s. In 1965 the Metroliner prototype did 168, I think. The turbo train exceeded 170 through here as well.
The fact Princeton junction was high level then made low level only to be made high level again
Low platforms on the NEC. Imagine that today.
There's still plenty of low-level platforms on the NEC. Jersey Avenue Station is a prime example.
Farewell Cleo, adn T Bone! (Get Married!) Thank you Cleo, & t Bone! You Become The Husband, & Wife of Them!
Seems like the editor was only interested in Amtrak and Conrail. No commuter traffic at all?
Not as many commuter trains back then.

Are there any more videos of trains passing through Princeton Junction in the 1970s with actual sound? 🙂
From me? No.
@@RailroadMediaArchive What about in general? I think that's what I meant. 😁
@@Bammer2001 I don't know of any others, but that's not to say nothing else exists.
Arrow II’s and Arrow III’s were in this video.
Man, Amtrak inherited the GG1s? I learned something new today!
They ran until late 1983 on NJ Transit as well.
4:12 u catch a super rare alco they in Pennsylvania museum now.
Back then these trains are common
Neat to see the E44's
