Wish I was a teenager in the 80's, I just turned 25 this last November and I wish I had the opportunity of enjoying this music at the time it came out. Affotunaly I can rock this music because of internet.
I think you needed to be at least born in the '70s to be old enough to appreciate this song (Maybe '81 at the latest). (I was lucky enough to go clubbing when this was new)
Yeah... I never realized how this bass line went until I heard this version. I love the way it comes up to the G before resolving back down the F. It really moves things along and gives a dramatic flair to everything on top of it. Madonna was a very talented kid. Impressive as all heck.
Madonna is not to be credited for the bassline you describe, nor this song. It's written by Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson. Bass is by the genius Patrick Leonard that contributed alot during Madonnas career in the 80s and 90s. Madonna didn't write much but preformed other peoples song. Sometimes her record label wanted her name to be quoted as Co/writer for profile purposes as they wanted to promote her as more than a singer. In reality she didn't write much music. Not very different from other stars like Elvis for instance.
@@Underhills "My Heart Will Go On" was not written by Celine Dion. "I Will Always Love You" was not written by Whitney Houston. Why the double standard? In fact, not sure Whitney wrote any of her songs. It's only with Madonna that I see these kinds of comments. sad.

I have a decent 12" singles collection, I graduated HS in '84, Madonna is by far the largest number in it. This one, Like a Virgin, Borderline, Lucky Star, Dress You Up, Material Girl, Causing a Commotion, True Blue, Papa Don't Preach, Live To Tell, and probably a couple others I can't pull up right now. I still remember going to the record store in the mall (I *think* it was called Everybody's [music]), and thumbing through the (paper) Phonolog catalog (anyone else remember that?) to find the 12" of Like A Virgin. I also remember it took some time digging through the Phonolog to find the 12" of Axel F, it was the B side of the 12" New Attitude by Patti LaBelle, which of course I still have.
