self depracating humour is a huge part of British culture mostly for the middle and lower working classes, we tend not to take ourselves too seriously and are more interested in having a good laugh than any potential ego bruising
That's why Jimmy Carr can't be successfully heckled. He has already been there and done the joke himself. Unstoppable.
Laughter can be the best medicine, and a healthy sense of humour can make difficult things easier to cope with. But obviously if your appendix bursts next week for fks sake go to a hospital.

This isn't British TV. And I have a sense you wouldn't want it on TV if you and yours were the recipients of constant crude jokes. But if it's women...edgy, brave, he went there.

If he made no money over the tax thing, what did he pay back?
I wasn't sure if he meant, on net after paying the tax he made no money, or if he meant that the scheme was so bad that he barely made any money from it, and then he still got in trouble and had to pay it back even though it wasn't that much money.
For someone in Jimmy's position probably £50k counts as nothing compared to the effort involved.
Well, he got all sorts of joke material from it.
Notice how the host didn't laugh with the crude bits at all (because he's aware his wife may be listening)
Here in America avoiding taxes is just normal, wouldn't even be a scandal. As long as you're not breaking the law, a rich man having a tax shelter is just good business. It amazes us that this is even such a thing, but it's fun. I like the jokes.
Yeah, the American way is that it's just fine to be rich and greedy, the Brits see it differently.

We all should. The rich should pay their fair share of tax.....
Tax avoidance schemes and worse tax evasion schemes allow the rich to pay a significantly lower % on their earnings than the poor.
Many services including the NHS represent a safety net for people in need.
Rich people and corporations not contributing their share is the reason you have to pay so much.
I wonder how Rachel feels about him talking about her that way.
