I’ve never heard of this gentleman. I’m glad that he’s getting his roses while he can still smell them.
Still wry and spry for a person in their mid-80s. Pure class and character.
You notice how he was playing without a helmet too. He must be tough AF or slick at the game.
@@JL91. Not just that… he was blind in his right eye if I’m not mistaken.
I’ll be at that game when they retire his number. I’m a life long Bruins fan and I did know about O’Ree since I was a kid. Really looking forward to it, I can guarantee the crowd will be rocking!
I grew up in San Diego attending Gulls hockey games. We kids made countless posters and signs. Wore the team colors. My Mom even sewed us outfits! And Willie Oree was our hands down favorite player. He was the best in skill and character. It warmed my heart hearing that his number is the ONLY one hanging in the SD Arena. I so hope he is honored with the Congressional Gold medal!
(BTW CBS why is captioning not available on this?)
HE WAS PLAYING AGAINSTS MINOR PRO PLAYERS, ESPECIALLY IN HIS ERA, THEY WERE NOT VERY GOOD, NEITHER WAS WILLIE..JUST BITTER AND ANGRY BLACK MAN.
@@badtortoise3338 He was a member of the NHL Bruins and later the San Diego Gulls. Therefore he played both. And from the many many years I watched him play he was an excellent player and person. He is neither bitter or angry. Sure seems like you are though.
Was listening to Patrice O'Neal on O&A #77 (about 32 minutes and 20 seconds in) which was recorded sometime in 2008 and this is the first I've ever heard of this man.
Wow, he seems to be in very good shape and still speaks well for a 86 year old man. Respect!
I remember seeing him in a show on Everybody Hates Chris. He is a very effective communicator without a doubt.
Congratulations Sir Well Deserved
WOW!!!
Kudos to this great man 👏🏒
Thank you Sir for your fight!
I saw him play for the San Diego Gulls when I was in the Navy in the early 70's. The crowd roared every time he stepped on the ice and he was the fastest player.
O’ree is a freaking legend!
Read his book. Excellent read.
Patrice O’Neal brought me here.
Yes!!! This is gonna trigger trump cultists 🤣
Larry Kwong was the "Jackie Robinson" of hockey (i.e. the player to break the colour barrier). Just like Wat Misaka did for the NBA, curious to see the continued erasure of the historical contributions of Asian Americans & Canadians which only helps fuel the myths that they are foreigners/outsiders. Not to take away from the trailblazing of Willie O'Ree who's done a Hall of Fame worth effort in the NHL's diversity intitiatives.
How is an Asian man the black comparison to a black man?
@@ravenikon1261 he broke the colour barrier of his sport
Johnny Bucyk
Did you encounter any racial hostility ? In 🇺🇸, why did such "A STUPID QUESTION" have to be asked ? 👎
Well Desvered
Yeah but he's not in the NHL Hall of Fame where he belongs
He was inducted in the Class of 2018 along with Martin Brodeur, Martin St Louis, and Gary Bettman.
@@DodgerFan1988 thank you very much but they didn't say it in the piece that they did too so it's good to know that he's there
Those racist players are in the hall of fame?
This guy seems like a nice guy but come on already with this race stuff. No group is or ever was oppressed in the NHL.
Um wtf are you talking about? For years us born players weren't as well liked as Canadians, and then it became russian players were hated. And still to this day there are some of the right wing morons who think that the nhl should ban all foreign players and only use u.s. born players and ban Canada. Yes there are morons who think that.
Isn't that racist? He is not black or white he is simply a player who rightfully received a medal. Stop sorting people into black and white.
I thought the year of the black was over in 2021, what is the big deal about this....
He was the first black player in the NHL ? Do you not realize how monumental that is ??
