This dude has it figured out. One of my favorite stories is this guy’s life. It’s really inspirational to see someone so committed to combatting racism. Really love his idea of not challenging someone’s reality, but instead give them a better idea and always listening fully first without giving any advice or feedback. This is literally the only thing that has ever worked with my emotional support students. I used to kill myself trying to point out logic and/or try to fix everything without avail. After years of dealing with meltdowns and tantrums and episodes like you haven’t seen before, I learned that just listening to them, not reacting to their irrational perspectives that are 100% incorrect most of the time, but to just let them rant on without interrupting then when they are done they are typically ready to hear something along the lines of “yes I see what your saying, but is it also possible that…” Anything else is just futile Most people just want to feel heard and understood, and aren’t usually given the opportunity to be heard and listened to fully, it really does help their walls to come down and their defenses to ease.

When he talks about changing people's perspection in order to help change their reality. It's absolutely beautiful, because it's soo simply put. Though, things are easier said than done. There is no golden sentence or paragraph that can resonate with everyone. That's why this mans patience and understanding of his mission is really outstanding. Though it is 2022, that hardly means anything, a significant portion of the world population lives without power, others live in dictatorial regimes, like North Koreans do. You can't assume someone lives a modern city lifestyle simply because of the year.
We agree that racism is bad, we believe such because skin color does not have basis on one's character. We agree that black people act just as reasonably as white people, as do asian people, and as do any other people. That an average person has reasons for their beliefs and actions.
Should it not follow that racists have reasons for their actions. They may have been brought up to hate other races, maybe they hate out of fear, living in an isolated community, or maybe for some other reason. Either way, if the reasons they certainly have for hating other races can be deconstructed and corrected, then they could stop being racist.
However, if we cast out those people, they will never learn, in essence your argument becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Have you ever tried to change the mind of a racist, or have you shut them out, seen how they reject your ideas, and use that to perpetuate a notion about a truly broad group of people.
The best way you can honor Daryl is to practice his communication philosophy throughout your own life.

I’m so glad Joe brought him back. One of my favourite JRE’s was the first one. Daryl Davis is a soul of Gold, we need him so much in this world.
Dude is an absolute inspiration. I've known about him for a while and just understanding the way he communicates and interacts with people so patiently despite opposing view points has been a huge influence on the way I try to interact with people in the day to day.

Rogan has his own personal opinions on issues, and he doesn't let those opinions dictate the outcome of his highly educational interviews. There's a Chris Voss interview with Daryl, where he recalls his experience with a very high ranking clansman. At the end of the story, Daryl took the clansman's soon-to-be wife down the wedding aisle because her father couldn't attend. As a black man on a clan wedding. The man is incredible.
I saw that interview and it should be required viewing in schools and universities.

This is an enlightened man. A man who understands that people can change their minds, and the only thing keeping them from doing so is the human ego. Not just theirs but the ego trying to convince them otherwise as well.
Damn, Daryl is my hero. Not only is he an extraordinarily good piano player but his rationality and personal philosophy is effective and brilliant. A lot more people of ALL walks of life need to listen to this guy.

Really love his idea of not challenging someone’s reality, but instead give them a better idea and always listening fully first without giving any advice or feedback.
This is literally the only thing that has ever worked with my emotional support students. I used to kill myself trying to point out logic and/or try to fix everything without avail. After years of dealing with meltdowns and tantrums and episodes like you haven’t seen before, I learned that just listening to them, not reacting to their irrational perspectives that are 100% incorrect most of the time, but to just let them rant on without interrupting then when they are done they are typically ready to hear something along the lines of “yes I see what your saying, but is it also possible that…”
Anything else is just futile
Most people just want to feel heard and understood, and aren’t usually given the opportunity to be heard and listened to fully, it really does help their walls to come down and their defenses to ease.

Individuals should be judged on a case to case basis with respect to their intelligence. It is the clash of intelligence: recognizing patterns among groups while also respecting individualism. The fact he’s mature and strong enough to sit there and listen to these klansmen give their part and then talk to them about why it’s wrong is amazing. Most people never put up with that, much respect to this man for actually trying to make the world a better place.
Not only is this man incredibly wise and intelligent for realizing all the factors that contribute to someone being so immersed in a pathological ideology but so patient and tactful for being able to employ it to actually change their minds. It’s incredibly difficult to to that most would consider it a lost cause. That’s a hugely valuable skill and talent.
At its core he’s teaching cognitive dissonance and skepticism with style and grace. Any way you look at him, the man is an artist.
