      Plaster is a very difficult medium to work in for casting leaves.Your work time is very short,and yes very thin material when first starting.I would only recommend using plaster on small leaves.Sorry ,Not much help for you.

    I don't understand your paint usage for a leaf. Do you use just a standard acrylic paint, no sealer or finish and it holds up? I thought you said the paint in the dry brush technic isn't sealed? If you do seal is there a satin seal that doesn't make it so shiny? Can you use patio paints by Decoart? They state not for bird Baths or fountains so I don't know where to go from here. Thank you

    • @mrconcreteartisan
      @mrconcreteartisan  4 года назад

      If the piece is for indoors ,no need to seal it, outdoors needs to be sealed .Any craft acrylic paint is ok. See the link for sealer in your other question.

    I'm confused about your painting technique on the leaves. I understand you mainly use acrylic paints and you said you don't seal them on the dry brush technique. Yet in another video it says if you use acrylic paint and seal it it will last for a long time. So I'm confused whether you do or don't seal it and if you do what sealant to you use? I'd prefer a satin type finish and not so shiny.
    I love your videos and really want to thank you for putting in the time to help those of us learning!!

      Morning Deb ,If you are displaying the piece inside your home ,there is no need to seal it .If it's going to be out in the elements ,then you need to seal it.
      This is what I would use ,it's a water based sealer "natural" finish ,so a matte flat dry finish.

      Still confused about sealing products... I'm assuming you seal it after you paint It but every paint company I talked to said you can't seal a cement product if you've painted it. They all said the sealant is prior to painting. There is no way to use acrylic paint and make it water proof.
      If you find it works and you seal over the paint, have you found the product you mentioned to hold up and truly be waterproof? Is that how you would do a leaf for a water feature? Does Acrylic paint last if it's in water for a water feature or on the elements or are you using a house paint or??? I am sorry to ask again but I guess I need more detail. I don't want to incorrectly seal it and sell one that won't last.
      Thanks a million for your guidance it is greatly appreciated!!

      Hey Deb ,sorry been away .Been sealing acrylic that way for years ,as well as all other casters I know do as well.I have pieces in my own yard and friends that have been out in the weather and they still look great!

      @@mrconcreteartisan Hello, I just want to make sure this sealer you recommend can be used over paint? I painted a few concrete leaves I made, then sealed them with a water based Thompsons Multi-Surface Water proofer and it left the leaves tacky, even after months. I'm afraid of ruining another leaf. Also is the Behr Premium Concrete & Masonry Protector & Waterproofer the best to seal a leaf for a bird bath? Thank you. I'm still so unsure about the sealer over paint.

    Greetings, you are a great instructor, you explain with the purpose along the way. Thanks for sharing some of little tricks that really make a difference . I just made my first leaf mold and it looks like your first one. I have a several questions: what kind of sand are you using? My sand doesn't hold its shape and what kind of paint or stain do you use, finally, how long do you wait until you add color? thanks so much

    • @mrconcreteartisan
      @mrconcreteartisan  3 года назад

      Hi Edward , thanks for your question.If you mean the sand I put underneath ,any sand will do ,but it must be wet down first for it to hold it's shape.Paint you can use any acrylic paint ,latex or even acrylic craft paint.The trick is to seal it afterwards.I generally wait 10 days first.

    I have two questions. one, I couldn't find anything in your videos as to what you did to color the veins before you applied the washes. Do you apply a complete dark color wash first to color the veins? Also, do you seal the concrete first before you apply the color washes and or seal when you finis and what do you use? Thanks, you are a fatastic artist and I really appreciate you sharing!

    • @mrconcreteartisan
      @mrconcreteartisan  8 лет назад

      Hi robyn,thanks for your interest.The veins are covered by the first wash application,you want to get it deep into the veins.When you add your top wash you generally try not to force it into the veins ,but it will travel there.The darkness is because of their depth not so much the colour added.No you do not seal the concrete first ,you would seal it after your paint is finished and cured for 24 hours.You can always find me here as well diymolds.com/

    i was looking at part 2 & 3 on making a concrete leaf...& i did not see where you added the piece of wiring you show on this video....Did i miss it on the 1st part, ( I couldn't find that one)?
    Do I need to add this "wiring " in order so that it will Not break once IT'S dry?

      +san juanita Chavez It just helps with strengthening the overall leaf ,especially larger ones.But it's not always necassary,I do it because I sell them as a retail item ,so I like them to be as strong as possible.

    Which paint u use for this leaf.....& for fountains leafs

    • @mrconcreteartisan
      @mrconcreteartisan  7 лет назад

      It's an acrylic paint for display leaves , sealed with a concrete sealer.I would'nt use painted leaves in a water feature.I would suggest concrete with the addition of an iron oxide pigment , or an muratic acid stain treatment.
