  • Today is St Brigid’s Day and it’s also the beginning of National Storytelling Week in Ireland. To mark both of these occasions the ICC is delighted to bring you an absolute ‘tour de force’ from Ireland’s great female Storyteller Kate Corkery! In this hour long film ‘Stories From Irish Mythology’, directed by Dublin’s acclaimed filmmaker Sé Merry Doyle, Kate will blow you away with her captivating performance, delivering tales and stories with haunting power and gusto!
    Kate says:
“By way of introduction to our rich oral tradition, I chose four stories, each one representing a different cycle of Irish mythology. ‘The Cow of Plenty’ from the Mythological Cycle, ‘The Curse of Macha’ from The Ulster Cycle,’ Young Fionn Mac Cool’ from the Fianna Cycle and ‘King Labhraidh Loinseach’ from the Kings’ Cycle.
This heady mix of bloodthirsty, funny, passionate and moving stories kept our ancestors enthralled on dark evenings long ago. They have survived on the lips of storytellers for generations and can still live on in our imaginations today. I hope you enjoy them."
Originally from County Cork, Kate Corkery is the Resident Storyteller at the ICC and runs the venue’s monthly storytelling club ‘Around the Fireside’, which is the longest running storytelling club in the UK. In 2009 Kate won a Fringe First Award, as ‘Best Storyteller’ for “her outstanding work in regenerating the art of storytelling in society today”.
In recent years Kate toured far and wide internationally telling stories in Colombia, China, Russia, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador. She regularly returns to her native Ireland to feature in storytelling festivals, including Cape Clear, Yarn, Derry, Courtmacsherry, Slieve Bloom and Ghost of the Glens. She is a proud member of Aos Sceal Eireann, (Storytellers Association of Ireland).
Kate is also an author and an actor. Her book ‘Cork Folk Tales’ published in 2017, received outstanding reviews. The book is available from The History Press Ireland or email Katesay@hotmail.com
