It's sad when you realize how hesitant Horrible was in killing Hammer, only to then be opposed by Hammer's total willingness to kill Horrible.

I think that was actually the point. Hammer had no compunctions about killing. Which actually shows his true colors as maybe not such a good guy after all. Horrible hesitated showing, perhaps, he's not such a bad guy as he wanted everyone to see him.

Horrible's motivation for being a villain was Hammer's portrayal of being a "hero".

It's very interesting how hammer is a piece of shit but does good? Dr horrible is a nice and genuine guy but does bad? Actions and words... Both aren't good people??? It's very interesting
Though I believe Dr horrible could be redeemed. Hammer can not

They act like the death ray is a technological upgrade to the freeze ray, but after multiple viewings over all these years, I realized it's basically just a gun.
Instead of doing all that science, he could have just showed up with a gun.

Short of the "a thing" cut I'd say this is the peak. It's the moment, the only moment in his life, that billy was Dr. Horrible. He was embracing it, a supervillain, about to kill his rival, and get everything he ever wanted.
But then he saw penny, dying, her final words dedicated to the man that he hated most. He was billy again, but the world saw him as Dr. Horrible. He had lost everything that made him want to be Dr. Horrible. He was vulnerable, alone. Instead of dressing casually outside and as horrible indoors, it flipped. Because he was Billy, deep down he was just a man, not the great supervillain he had made for himself.
This is the peak of Dr. Horrible, not his later achievements, not whatever villainy he engaged with after this, this is when Dr. Horrible was real. Not a hidden face behind closed doors, not a façade worn under the command of bad horse, a real, self-made supervillain. And one mistake, one foolish error made in the interest of becoming everything he thought would impress penny and let him prove himself to her, reduced Dr. Horrible to a meaningless moniker, rather than a person.
The song itself is also a highlight, yes. Great sound, and that moment of Horrible clarity is exemplified by the Dr. Horrible theme in the song during the death ray reveal.
