9:29, English spells it salmon because some scholars wanted to make some of our words reflect their Latin origin so even though we got salmon from Anglo-Norman without an L, an L was added to reflect the Latin spelling or salmo/salmon.
Fun fact: in Middle English, because of how unstandardised spellings were, many words had a multitude of spellings. Example: samoun, samon, samone, samun, saumon, salmon, sawmun, samwn, samown, sawmoun, samen were all spellings of salmon.
Another example of unstandardised spellings is "iwinnen" with variants being iwinne, gewinnan, iwennan, ywynnen, ywynne, gewynnan, and ywennan, with the meaning "to conquer" or "to fight," a cognate of the German "gewinnen."
An additional example is "thou" with the variants being thou, þu, thu, þoue, thoue, þowe, thowe, þouȝ, thouȝ, þue, ðhu, þeu, þeou, thugh, thogh, þo, tu, tou, towe, and you.
