Saw it today - didn't want it to end as it's an enthralling, nuanced story, sad, funny, bittersweet with a very strong cast. Definitely a Richard E film rather than a Chris O'Dowd film.
Great review. I just saw this as it 's now on HBO. The acting, writing, casting, and everything about the film is incredible. It's also so real and different then most dramatic films and I love it. What you said is so true - she finds her own voice by imitating the voices of other peoples.
It has its moments..but not as engaging as I hoped. That said, I Adore Richard E Grant..& will watch anything he's in- and he chews up the scenary in this.. he's fab!
Melissa McCarthy only has herself to blame when people write that her acting is a revelation as she has acted in some bad movies in the past few years.
I can't figure out why the whole "comedian as dramatic actor" thing is still a talking point. It's not as if McCarthy is the first. Hell, she may not even be in the top 100!
How appropriate that Melissa McCarthy’s next film after The Happytime Murders should be called “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”.

Richard E Grant is a revelation, brilliant.
Kermode is the best film reviewer in the world. He nails it pretty much every time.
Good old Mark. Humane, fluent and effortlessly subtle.

Excellent movie, well worth a look.
Looking forward to this.
Great review as usual. Really looking forward to this. The book is excellent.
Wonderful film; and spot on Mark. If Richard E Grant doesn't win the Oscar for best supporting actor it will be a travesty.
I do hope Simon's kneecap isn't too badly injured
I really wasn't a fan of Melissa Mccarthy at all, but her performance in this film is remarkable.
Beautiful review.
Spot on, Mark.
It was a good film.
I feel like the trailer basically explained the whole movie
Great film!
Great movie
Great movie with great performances
Recalled 'Midnight Cowboy'.

Barfly meets Withnail
I hope it has plenty of the sweet cat that's in the trailer
Damn sounds like a great film
So Mark, did you like the movie or not?
Marielle Heller should have gotten a director's nod over McKay or Pawel
It was a good film but a bit of a slow burner.

Nice review for Melissa, but the Richard E Grant bit reminded me of Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder...
