Not too many things that can take me back to when I was 13 and this album came out. My best friend got it and we listened to it on his parents stereo. I temember it perfectly because I was so awestruck by it. Nothing else at that time like it.
The seven stages of dying are disbelief, denial, bargaining, guilt, anger, depression, and acceptance. The singer, Clare Torry did a great job showing each stage. When she did this song, she looked like she could have been a model she was so gorgeous.
It's actually "the seven stages of grief" Maybe you though of the "Five Stages of Dying: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance" Cheers 😊
I am a 46 year old man and, honestly, every time I listen to this song alone my eyes swell and start dripping from the countless emotions I feel exploding inside.
No need to apologize for reacting emotionally. This song comes as close as any I've ever heard to touching your actual soul. We all can feel the struggle in the sound of Claire's voice, the sound of a living human spirit fighting, bargaining and finally surrendering to the inevitability of letting go of life. Some day each and every one of us will experience it. That's the pure genius of this song.
Vocalist Clare Torry This was a song written by Keyboardist Richard Wright. He brought her on to fill in, some vocals to add some musicality to the song.
I read somewhere that when she finished the recording the band walked out and she thought they were disappointed. She didn,t realised they were in stunned disbelief
@@ralphoborn5015 I watched Roger Waters perform Dark Side of the Moon live at Wembley a couple of years ago and Great Gig In The Sky sounded incredible in the auditorium.
I'm really impressed by your ability to not only understand what the songs are about, but to actually FEEL what the songs are about on your very first listen. I've noticed that with other songs too. You're very good at this.
The singer was told to imagine she had just told that someone she loved had died. She was told not to sing words. She was to sing the phases of grief. And it only took Clare a couple takes to accomplish this.
There is an interview of Clare Torry on RUclips somewhere and it's an excellent watch! She talks about how she started out singing the O's in the Ah's and the band said no that's not what we want so she thought to herself that she had to imagine herself as an instrument and that is where this epic vocal came from!!!
I've seen and been with many people who've heard and reacted to this song. You are one of the very, very few who actually got it. Who understood what it was about, what the title meant, what was happening from beginning to end. No exaggeration. Most people feel something when they hear this. But they don't really get it. So, bravo. Beauty, brains, understanding. As always.
My Empress, could you, would you find it within your wisdom to grace us with another Royal from your dominion named King Sunny Ade. I learned of his excellency many years before you enchanted our beautiful planet. King Sunny Ade captured my soul with the rhythm of life in approx 1980 with a song called “Synchro System.” I still use it to work out to at the gym. If you would be so kind as to grant me this wish, if I could be so bold as to prevail upon you to give us English only people a cursory (informal will be fine) translation of his local dialect. I simply love your honest insight into music and being a geezer myself, you give me a second chance to hear things through young ears. Just keep being you. A sincere heartfelt best wishes to you and yours.
This song is intended to take you through the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Watching your reaction, I would say you felt some of those. I would love to see you do more Floyd in the future. Take good care.
Just so you know how powerful that song is. It took so much effort to sing that to replicate it live they used three singers. Hats off to Clare Torry. A masterpiece. Lets not forget the beautifully sad and sweet piano courtesy of Richard Wright. R.I.P. my friend.
Did ever a song say so much while saying so little? - this song gets to everybody. It really is a unique song and its always fascinating to see peoples faces upon hearing this for the first time and you're no exception. Stay safe. Great reaction
Richard Wright requested this song for his funeral during his lifetime. He asked Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer from the Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing the song at his funeral. There is still an unconfirmed rumor that Durga was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.
The true way to experience this is to listen to this entire album. It’s like one long song flowing together. Truly a masterpiece. Trust me you’ll love it. Thanks for the reaction!
@@brewswillis9783 Great that we all know the story. I meant she did a SINGLE take, beginning to end, not ONE take. Yes, it was the second 'take' and you're right, she tried some lyrics first time. And she didn't know if PF liked it until she saw the credit on the album sleeve.
You nailed it so completely! Anger at knowing you are dying, sorrow in leaving family, loved ones, and the world, and acceptance of the inevitable, and finally hope for the peace to be found beyond. Clare Tracy did this all in one take. She was asked to add voice to the music and this is what she came up with in one try. They sat there listening and made no reaction when she finished. She literally felt she had disgraced herself and the music. She ran out of the room, sobbing. They had to run after her to tell her how amazing she was and Boy was she. I still get chills listening to this. Such emotion conveyed to us and yet not one word spoken! Amazing! AMAZING!!!!!
My son will play this at my passing, I already had one stage two tumor removed but it is growing back again. We all are born to die and no amount of begging and pleading with God will change your path. We must all be kinder to each other. Appreciate each other.

I’m glad your are listening to it finely, I suggested it long time ago, I really wanted to see your reaction, it was worth it to see you reacting to it.
Wonderful reaction Joy-Jean. Pink Floy is a legendary, iconic British Rock band formed in 1965. They have sold 250 million albums worldwide and are considered the GOAT in Progressive Rock history. I have been a Pink Floyd fan since 1971 when they released their 6th album "Meddle", I was 15 years old! First of all you are incredibly beautiful but the fact you have the empathy to react to that song with such emotion and compassion means you have an equally beautiful soul, which is even more important. Great Reaction !!
I love watching reactions to music videos especially songs I have grown up listening to .. I have always understood the song as grieving at the beginning a man's voice is heard obviously contemplating death .... Then you hear a woman's voice high with emotion and sounding in grief and distress , as the song goes on its as if she has made peace with her grief although you can still hear pain in the singer's voice .... Absolutely a masterpiece . X
Wow beauty and brains. Your interpretation of this song was absolutely right on point. I was one of the listeners who recommended this song, after watching your emotional reaction to Comfortably Numb i knew you would like this. Wish you were here is another great song. Maybe not quite as intense but very powerful lyrics.
I've always thought of this as one of the most moving vocal performances in the history of recording. This album as a whole, for me, is easily the best single overall composition ever. I can still remember being so shocked when I learned that the singer was not a black woman and that this was performed "on the fly".
Not only with just the vague instructions to express the 7 stages, but did it in two takes.
