This song now means a whole lot to me. I just sang this to my grandfather. I wanted to give him something special. He is about to pass away, and I wanted to sing him a song from The Wizard of OZ because it's his favorite. I will alsmost always cry to this now. I love you, grandpa ♡
Judy Garland inspired me to become an actress, she's watching and guiding me in my acting career she's always going to have a special place in my heart forever also every time I listen to somewhere over the rainbow it makes me feel better and I know she's telling me to keep following my dreams
Garland is like so many other screw up celebrities. She accepted abuse for the sake of her career. She didn't warn others adequately to avoid her plight. Rather, she normalised the monstrosities of Hollywood by her silence and putting her daughter into the business. She's a fine singer but she's no martyr.
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why, then, oh, why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh, why can't I?
My mom used to sing this to me before bed when I was little. I would ask for “the rainbow song” Now I’m all grown up and my mom and I are doing Wizard of Oz for the play this year for our school’s theatre program. I can’t wait to share our joy of the songs with the kids. 😊
My Nana would sing this song while I was a wee lad in the rocking chair, now I listen to it and it can make a grown man cry. If I’m already depressed it’s hard to listen
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, originally titled “Over the Rainbow Is Where I Want To Be”, was written in 1939 for the motion picture “The Wizard of Oz”. The piece won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1940. The ballad that Judy Garland called “sacred” became her own anthem. In 2001, when it was voted the greatest song of the 20th century, the headlines usually focused on the star, “Judy Garland’s #1 “Over the Rainbow”, with hardly ever a mention of composer Harold Arlen and lyricist Yip Harburg, both unknown outside the show-business realm. The standard followed the actress-singer throughout her career, at times burdening her though. She once claimed : “It’s like being a grandmother in pigtails.” The blessing somewhat turned into an onus, so to speak. But a performer must meet the audience’s expectations after all…. and the crowd simply couldn’t get enough of it… 💜🌈💚 May you Rest In Peace SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW, Frances Ethel Gumm, a.k.a. Judy Garland (1922 - 1969)… 🌹
this was my great grandmothers favorite song before she died, i loved her so much and she is in a better place now. R.I.P violet, you are loved, and always will be missed 🕊❤
❤ I loved listening to my nan sing this to me. Sat in front of the gas fire sting biscuits out of the biscuit barrel back in 1995-97. Im so glad I had this played at her funeral 2 years ago. NAN your favourite song ❤ Nans are a special type of breed. They are they’re for you no matter what. And in this hard time in my life I’m dealing it without my dearest nan. 😢 she’d know exactly what to do to help me. I just wish she was here still. Miss you nana xx
I mean, times definitely weren't better like at all. If I got married in 1939 I'd have been my husbands property so I'm certainly glad I wasn't born until decades later. But I do adore the Wizard of Oz, I wore out my VHS copy when I was a kid. But for the actors it was literally a living hell. The amount of abuse and life threatening situations they were put in is appalling. It's really important to remember when we look back with the rose colored glasses of nostalgia that virtually nothing was better decades ago.
I love this song so much. My mom used to sing me this every night. I couldn’t sleep with out it then, and now I just learned that I share a birthday with Judy Garland (June 10th).
I'm listening to this song mum because all I do is sleep, because when I sleep you come to me in my dreams. I have just been awoken from my sleep by the dogs and I'm so heartbroken because I was dreaming, in my dream it was you that awoke me, you had returned and you were playing this song and singing along with it. "Mum, you're here... You're really here?" "Of course I am, I'll always be here, you know where to find me" I don't know what means? I know I'm so broken mum, but I really really want to join you there. You made me promise to look after myself and the kids, I truly truly love them but feel so anchored to this world. Mum I hope you can see and hear me reading this aloud as I write because I need you're guidance and permission. I love you so much mum love and kisses x 3.
This is the only song that would make me stop crying when I was younger. my father would always sing it and I would stop immediately. I'm planning on making it my daddy daughter dance.
Greatest song of 21 century? Song favorites have emotional ties (our circumstances) and as kids, we have many ties (hence circumstance) to songs like Christmas carols. As we age, most compare differences of those early songs with songs that we now as adults, may feel more emotional about. It would be somewhat interesting to see that list...even more...who were the voters and their geographics (circumstances?) This song is still one of my favorites yet not even close to others I have.
With a kind person being honest (not manipulating me)..."you won't be gaslit here, you won't have your reality or humanity or dignity denied, you wont be abused...no one wants to, or will, harm you here...those people that tortured you will never find you here" Where dreams come true! Oh how amazing that would be! Nightmare over! Those people will never be able to torture you again, your dream will come true here, they will never find you again!
If Disney made The Wizard of Oz (1939) as an animated film instead of MGM, would the animation resemble Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo, and Bambi (1942)?
If Disney made The Wizard of Oz instead of MGM, would Dorothy Gale look like a mixture of Snow White, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Anna from Frozen, Slue Foot Sue from Melody Time, and Judy Garland herself and would Milt Kahl, Marc Davis, Ward Kimball, Les Clark, and Fred Moore animate her?
Everyone everyone please get your places get your places it's a journey it's a path that's the only way that anyone's going to ever discover how to set us free You know your mommy jumped over the moon it took a moment she kissed him first man from the Moon the first the little one in the blue took off with the stamp and envelope and no one knew the wind came it was sour noted it was mean, the house took off right out of here it went that way .... let us know how it works out

It's terrible what the studio did to her, but this song is wonderful. I love her, forever.
Yea if you watch documentaries on it Judy was abused on set and everything but she was the star of this film she will forever be missed.

It's a shame the actual movie production was so sad and scary, just to help make the masterpiece of a movie
