I’ve always enjoyed buying things physically. Going to local book stores is so much more of a treat than just ordering them off of Amazon or Barnes and noble
i'd take it up a notch and say that the more niche a store's wares the more fun it is. You can always find more fun and special things in a specific shop as opposed to a supermarket
If they are coming back, they need more boutique shops. Lids, Spencers, and Bath & Body Works ain't gonna cut it. I want to see unique items. I'm too poor to buy anything unique, but I can see them, at least.
My local mall has 3 or 4 "asian" shops that draw a lot of attention apart from the pretzels, lego, and movie theater, the punk/skater shops in the mall could have been a big hit with my generation and drawn in a lot of business but they went pro establishment during the political shift and lost that potential for themselves and the mall. Uniqueness in products and services is definitely something malls need in the current financial climate. Stale copy paste stores aren't going to cut it not start up's or franchises.
Malls are simply a vibe, one of the few things that reminds me of the life before. I like malls, online is fine. But sometimes, i just want to walk around and hang with friends. Also the things you can do! Want to watch a movie at the theater after leaving hot topic? Yes! Let's get some ice cream after too, and maybe go to the arcade. There is so much you can do in a mall!
about the efficiency issue, when people order online they are typically only purchasing one item that will have to be shipped overseas, whereas most stores have a supplier and order items in bulk reducing a lot of inefficiency.
Ordering stuff online is so inconvenient, when you buy something online you have to wait way longer then if you just buy something in a store, you can just have it right away, i very rarely order things online.
Honestly, thats the big thing for me. Ive had many projects delayed by alot due to having to order items that i know in the past i couldve driven to a store for a similar item
Oof and package thieves too. One time a delivery driver dumped my package in a bad spot in my yard and not my front door, it got poured on and destroyed by dogs.
What’s hurting malls is that most everything there’s for women. There’s not a lot left in the mall for men. They need to bring back arcades. I bet you if they put in a retro arcade near one of the door locations they would skyrocket.
i mean you go to the mall to shop for clothes and material goods. usually at the larger department stores there are more stuff for men. i think you mean that there's nothing as far as paying for entertainment. at my local mall there's a cinemark theater a super large arcade where our sears used to be. kinda crazy to see. you maybe want to try a galleria mall if you're in the US and have one near you?
Adding entertainment in general is good for malls! Arcades, bowling alleys, movie theaters, all the American malls I’ve been to recently that are doing well have these things, and malls overseas have that and so much more!!
I do like the idea of buying things and actually seeing what you are going to get. I hate going online and seeing 100 listings for the same product from different sellers.
few years back i was in a very vertical lookin mall in chicago and there was this little shop filled with cutsie plushes. one of my friends with me said they lost a plush identical to one she was holding. the cashier overheard and said we could just take it. they said the job sucked and they were gonna quit later that week anyway. it made my friend's day and i still think about that sometimes. i also got a rad shirt that looked like a 90's carpet
Malls can also have different things to do now. In my favorite one there's a Round 1 that has an arcade, bowling, pool, and karaoke, there's a movie theater though it needs better seats, there's a Legoland Discovery Center with a Lego store up front, a really cool Bass Pro Shop called Outdoor World, and a Rainforest cafe which has some neat aquariums and water features. Another part of malls coming back is having a lot of stuff to do under one roof.
When I go to a mall since I'm alone I just walk around and I get food because there's nothing I have there nothing they have there I can justify other than food.
Thinking back i spent so much time at our localest mall and i actually miss going with friends shopping around christmas time, thats a whole different vibe in itself! Our localest mall where im from just went down hill in the past 15 years losing so many stores but the mall where I live now is just thriving to the point that its weird seeing a mall with modern day looking kids!
there's a galleria mall near where i live that's always full. it's difficult to find parking on the weekends. it makes the world seem less bleak that people still want to go out and shop instead of doing online shopping.
I love physical retail and it's always been the superior option to buy in person if you can, i have been screaming from the rooftops that people should be buying in person for years, but i hate the pathetic husk that retail and malls have become.we need a massive resurgence of malls
my Roman Empire is and always has been the impact and importance of the american mall, enormous props to you, your research and time spent is appreciated ❤
I just like going places to get things tbh its so much more fun to spend a day in a new area than just do a couple clicks and start waiting. It also gives me excuses to try local food places when i'd normally just eat mcdonalds slop or the £8 pizza place near my nans house.
I hope abandoned malls get turned into apartments and gyms because that would help us (california and NY does that already but other 48 states need to do the same thing)
I know my local mall intends to bulldoze most of the thing and replace most of the property with smaller shops and housing. At least thats the current word around, you never truely know with it
That's kind of lame, malls are one of the last community centers (third spaces). Besides actually community centers and gyms as mentioned. Apartments are sad and terrible, we should just control our population (hot take)
huge resurgance in my local mall recently, last time I went I was actually suprised with how full it was even had some new stores I think alot of people feel this way now.
The people who genuinely thought buying online was better only to recieve the product half-assed in the box or destroyed are losers, honestly. A mall literally lets me see, touch and smell the product so I know specifically that I'm getting what I want and it's not going to be destroyed except by my own volition when I leave the store.
While last mile emissions are very important, don't forget that Amazon has made a deal with USPS. This means that they are using a service that was going to come to your house anyway to deliver mail to also deliver most packages. This in theory adds density back to USPS routes following dwindling mail usage due to lack of necessity.
All valid and interesting points, but I feel like we are all (maybe not ALL, as the video did make references to it) severely underestimating the importance of physical space. There is so much data about how healthy it is for humans to just do things that seem boring, like walk, or interact with human beings. We are built to be this way, and we should stop pretending like we can sacrifice all of this on the altar of convenience. Sure, when cool new things come out...like online shopping...we think "wow, so cool that I don't have to go anywhere now" without considering the cost to our physical and mental health, and the amount of memorability things gain when you actually DO them, not pretend to. If you have heard of a thing called "memory palaces", it becomes clear how important physical spaces are for memory. Basically, I am just reiterating some of the points in this video
People in the Montreal area still rush to the mall (pick one, there are many) whenever a holiday is coming, especially Christmas. Sure, online shopping is nice, but nothing beats the feeling of walking into a store and physically inspecting the item you want to buy. Online shopping doesn't come anywhere close. Well, except if you're me and you need to find a book you really want in English!
I miss the small local mall we once had. It no longer existed shutting down in 2012 if my memory served me right. It was such a great place. All that remains, a reminder of the past is a food court. Which used to consist of many of the former food locations. Different structure but did house them for a time. Aside from that a solution to help Introverts is to add kiosks where we can order our food and then optionally pay at the counter. Something some Taco Bells do. It would help some introverts slowly open up more.
I'm a strong supporter of physical shopping over online shopping, however I would be much happier if city downtowns made a comeback instead of shopping malls.
as someone over 30, ive never stopped going to malls or to stores to buy things even though i shop online. i hate waiting and would rather pay a bit extra to have it immediately, if i can.
I think Malls are declining not just because of online shopping/ internet but, simply, there were far too many of them anf a lot of them were in awful locations. A decline was inevitable
we are mall culture here in the Philippines always have been, even with the rise of online shopping. People here are practical and have good common sense with these kinds of things seriously

Theres not a lot of hangout spots left, so we have malls. The restaurants at the mall are super good, and some stores provide decent clothes without the sales tax etc
I didn't stop going to malls because of online shopping. I stopped because of the predatory browns that mug you in the parking lot or break into your car.
I love the mall but me and wife went the week before Christmas and two guys started fighting they pulled guns out and waved them at each other. Everyone panicked and ran to every directions fire alarms went off gates slammed shut and sounded like gun shots I got separate from my wife and everything got confusing and crowded and people started trampling. I assumed everyone thought there was an active shooter I got out through an underground emergency exit and met up with my wife in the parking lot . Cops pulled up and arrested the guys. 10:23 another thing is that you care more about what you buy and you’re less likely to throw it out when you buy it in person if somebody gets a stain on something they bought on the Internet they tend to be like OK whatever and I’ll throw it away and that’s bad for the environment
I miss malls so much! In one of my old videos i mentioned we need to bring malls back again!! Shopping outdoors is so miserable I like walking around in mazes indoors trying to find the way I entered in with an ac and the fresh scent of popcorn 🍿

Ok, so unique items that mostly don't get bought. So more like a museum, then?
There's a growing store brand called Mini So that sells imports.
I’m glad my local mall is still thriving, there was a time when it got destroyed in a flood, but it’s still standing, stronger than ever.
Same thing happened to my local mall, and it too is still thriving.
~im still standing~YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!!~~
