its great, my experience, the pater pentacon for m42 mount is very inferior in sharpness and everything else. i sold it, some time larer i got the pentacon prakticar 50 1.8,, its so different, that i xant beliece its thr same recipe, sharpness is very high, build and bokeh far better too. unfortunately i can not compare it face to face with the oreston, i curios about similarity and differences
Very good video as usual Nigel...somewhat a coiiectors edition... do like your quotable phrases. Er hem... slightly disapointed you didn't do more detail on the Jupiter 9 with pre set aperture like mine... that just materialised out of a cupboard in my case (black version) cheers anyway.. your knowledge is just endless like one of those very long fright trains chuntering down the Hudson Valley USA... I like your voice it really soothes like a gud un... Cheers bud.....
Very interesting lenses indeed! Another hidden german gem is the schacht ulm 2.8 50mm a Tessar design with a bunch of apperture blades. I just love it. What price bubble? Two weeks ago I picked up a Minolta 50mm 1.7 for 5 euros at a thrift shop.
I just looked up images taken with the schacht on Flickr. I’m not impressed, the vignetting wide open is really bad. I’m assuming you shoot it stopped down quite a bit?
@@alexblaze8878 I did. The pictures of flowers and butterflies is probably taken with extension tube to get that close, giving extreme bokeh. Things get better with the pictures of dogs and cats, a matter of taste, of course.
Thanks for your regular Sunday evening videos. They wind up the weekend nicely. CZJ lenses came with brown leather hard cases. I wonder how many survive. It would be interesting to know how much these lenses cost new. I think as a very rough rule of thumb they would be around half the price of comparable third party lenses from companies like Vivitar and Tamron, so very cheap.
Thanks for showing the Biometar I didn't know that lens. What I know, is that pretty little Tessar, that I've got with f2.8. Isn't it tiny? But I think the "T" coatings work pretty well on it. The difference to the lesser coated Flektogon (Alu version, too) is quite remarkable.
Beautiful lenses. Enjoyed the pictures too, especially the cat. I only have one Carl Zeiss Jana lens, the 50mm Pancolar mark i, which is probably my favorite of my ventage lenses. I'd love to get some more CZJ lenses in my collection, especially the 80mm one. Holding out till I see a deal I like on the M42 one as bayonet mounts don't really adopt well to my DSLR. One of these days I'll get a full frame mirrorless camera just for my ventage lens collecting and using.
As you say, Nigel, 3 lenses for the collectors, but there must be some of these lurking in cupboards or tucked away in the back shop of second hand camera shops somewhere that will sell for less money. I've noticed that some quite ordinary lenses are being marked up on Ebay for ridiculous money, I'm sure that the bubble will burst soon as we become more educated by sites like yours and we refuse to bite at the prices asked. I've also noticed that you can buy a fantastic quality film camera body that has had the lens ripped off it to sell for a profit. That was how I got my recent Canon FTBn, £38 sans lens, but I already have a number of FD mount lenses in my collection so it's nice to reunite these old bodies with their glass. Sunday night is Zenography night, as another fan has said, the weekend ends very nicely with a stroll down lens memory lane. 'Til next week...... George
The bubble will have to burst eventually, although I'm really not sure when. Bodies are very cheap at the moment though - a good time to shoot some film!
That Meyer is a nice hidden gem. i have one that my dad got in 1957 And still looks like new. Nice rendering lens. They called it a weichzeigner, the opposite of the Tessar (Arendsauge)
I'm shocked with how big the adapter from pentacon 6 to e-mount is!! Anyway, you are right, the biometar 80 is around 130€ in ebay, far cheaper than the jupiter 9, and it looks gorgeous!
It's quite a lens too, I think it's probably worth losing that stop of light to the Jupiter, as it's a better lens on the whole. Thanks for looking in!
do you know the volna 3, 80 f2 8 for kiev 8x8 medium format, its broad as a large soup cup, but still very light and flat, so the dimension looks small. it certainly need a lenshood to deliever well, but the fine micro contrasts, gentle delicate colours and great sharpness wide open, made me sell my modern samyang and use this instead. they are cheap, because the mounting need some diy work , but its not inpossibly
I have a Meyer Görlitz Domiplan which is the most common Meyer lens. Unfortunately the aperture is defective and is stuck at about f/3.5. I will have to address that at some point. But as of now I didn‘t dare. However, even almost completely wide open the lens is surprisingly sharp. I find it even a little sharper than my copy of the Tessar 50/2.8 from the sixties.
The Domiplan is a nice little lens - it sounds like yours needs a service but like you say, who cares? If it makes pictures, you can use it! Thanks for looking in.
if you like compact portrait / short tele lenses, try the nikon e 100 2.8 and the olympus om 100 2.8 , without having hold this biometar ,80 mm, im convinced these 2 are smaller, both are very sharp, made me sell my takumar 100mm instead.. btw, the nikon provide cold and a bit pale colours, and the olympus.... well you allready know what olympus colours are.. i hope you will try the mentioned lenses, i can heartly recommend them.. i will keep mine forever
I have the Olympus 100mm 2.8 in silver nose version - it's a lovely lens and very small, as you say. I haven't tried the Nikon, though I'll keep a look out for it - thanks for the tip!
Nigel, one thing to be honest - it's not great to push that CZJ 80/2.8 Biometar soo hard, because it's 1) extreme expensive for the past >5 years, and 2) it's almost a 85mm, so a typical "portrait" shooters lens - this video even would make these lenses more expensive, and i doubt, >90% of this community doesn't need the 80mm focal length...no offense. Keep up the great work!
Jupiter 9 is hyped lens not worth the price. I will never buy hellos 15 or pancolar 80 as there are better portraits for that lens. But you are right about biometer, it is a good lens, but still there are better lens at 80mm level.
Great review! I love my Biometar!! - McCall Jones ; los angeles!
The Oreston is my favorite Meyer Optik. Amazing lens.

Do you mean the attache size style with Leitz in the leather, or individual cases?
@@sclogse1 Individual round cases with either a zip or press stud.
The Biometar still has its case - I should have shown it!

Greta video mate!
there is also a biometar 120mm f2.8 which is also really good shallow depth of field and sharp.

How does the Biometar 80mm compare colour wise to the CZ Flektogons ?
according to zeissikonveb the Primotar 3.5/50 is a Tessar design from the 30ies. this one was produced from 1956 on.
I thought it was probably a Tessar - thanks for confirming!
