log_16(1/4) = log_16(1) - log_16(4)
= 0 - log_16(16^(1/2)) = -(1/2)log_16(16) = -1/2*1 = -1/2
The only thing you need to be careful about, is that in some industries “log” is implied to be a different base.
I was in a programming class and we used “log” that was base 2 but it wasn’t indicated. The teacher said it didn’t matter and you can use any base you like but 2 was standard for this application.
And in number theory, "log" often means the natural logarithm, written "ln" in other places.
The OP who was sitting this test ought to have been able to deduce that the logarithm was supposed to be base ten from the multiple choice answers. Such deduction might count as part of the test.
On the other hand, maybe the question setters threw in an answer that was correct for "log" being a different base... but I doubt they'd do something like that unless it was part of one of those deliberately hard tests designed to ensure failure.

I hate log without a base as the base can sometimes be e (i.e. natural log) or 2 (in compuer science), making it quite confusing. In fact, in most applications, natural log instead of log base 10 is more useful. Of course, in some cases such as the big-O notation, the base does not matter.
On most calculators log means base 10 and ln means base e.
Lots of "it's assumed to be this" in math. Bit of laziness on mathematician's part. No harm to put a 10 in the base if it helps

one other way of thinking about logs (and especially so logarithmic scales/axes) is by thinking about orders of magnitude. and hundred is two orders of magnitude bigger than one; hence, the log is two.

When I studied maths, log always meant the same thing as ln. Admittedly that seems rather redundant.

m/n should be reduced to its lowest form first. if m is even ex: 2, and n is ex: 3. we write it as cube root of y squared.

And the beauty of Math is that you can work all this out by yourself just knowing basic math and the definition of the log() function.

log is log base e. exp means e^ Wolfram alpha agrees with me, not with you.
The default base is an arbitrary convention. Of course mathematicians prefer _e_ as the base, but this is referred to as a "Navy practice test", so it's not for mathematicians.

Different disciplines have different conventions for what unspecified log means. In Wolfram Alpha, log means complex log, which is log base e, and the full picture that includes log base e of negatives and complex numbers. The most common convention is that unspecified log is log base ten, as that is what is of interest to scientific applications. Some disciplines use unspecified log to mean log base 2, like computer science.

Wolfram was programmed by a person with falabilities. There are calculator apps programmed incorrectly...
