This song and video is amazing to me.. I'm a South Dakotan born and raised(20 y.o.) and last year just after this video was released, we had the worst summer in memory. None of our corn came in and what did was far under what was projected. It was the hottest year on record with no rain. My area was hit some of the hardest. I actually work on the outside of a building that depends on the harvest(Corn Palace, Mitchell SD) and this video rings true on many levels. Things were tough all over

I remember that summer--was working in Wisconsin on a prairie-restoration job. Everything was dying, and one of our neighbors struck a spark off of a rock when he was harvesting wheat. By the time he turned around at the end of the row, about 10 acres were already burning; I don't know how much he lost in total.
Dear Rise Against, Thank you for opening more people's eyes to the injustices that take place in this world every day. And making great music along with it.
I grew up on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania and this is EXACTLY what it was like. Pop Pops gone now and so are the cows. Dad and I work in a factory today......this hits home. America, what are you coming to?

Are you by any chance from an ex-communist country (i somehow doubt someone in a communist country could watch this video now...)? If not, then let me trow some light over it: people were waiting for hours in order to buy a couple of bananas; they were trampling one another so they could be the first to buy a chicken (all this while the country was having a decent production, enough to feed them all properly) Capitalism is by far the best economic system we (humans) have developed, allowing all people to prosper (or to fail), so you should think twice and learn more before talking about "eradicating" the capitalism
Capitalism is good with common sense regulation, mixed in with some socialism in areas that shouldn't be for profit (healthcare, education, police and fire department, army). Either of the extremes is bad
i dont know how this video has eluded me for 6 years... amazing song, amazing cover, and amazing video. this message too often goes overlooked because no one is really aware of what is happening out in rural areas - they just expect produce to appear on their plates.
Watching this really hit home. I grew up in an oilfield in Wyoming. It was a place where most people came to for their last resort for making a living and making a life. I know there are situations like this that are far worse in other countries...but that's there, we have the power to keep this from happening here. I feel we should always provide opportunities and support for the less fortunate, but not fully support them. We all need support from somewhere.
Vladamir: I know, but it completely captures what Rise Against is fighting to show us. It's a great song that shows us that the longer we continue in our mad struggle for the dollar the harder we'll fall in the end.
This is so true and beautiful worded, I agree! It captures what they’re “fighting to show us”! yeah i agree with you 100%. I thinks Tim and the rest of the band believe as long as they have a loyal fan base, and the music and videos they make reach and affect the right people the right way, then they don't need awards to prove they are successful. In our eyes, they already are.
I f*cking love Rise Against, this song and all my fellow Rise Against fans carrying out their message about building a better world by eradicating all that's wrong with it. I love you my comrades.

I think there would be more humanistic people in this world if we all realized we're all in this together, but we all have our own struggles to deal with. So many of you think you know it all about complete strangers. Just remember we all take life at our own stride. What you see as no big deal, another may see as the worst thing that ever happened. Respect and love one another. It'll make it easier for all of us together.
I'm pretty sure no band will top rise against in my life time. They make some of the best music out there and raise awareness for so many different things that REALLY matter in life.
THthefirst I would disagree. it's like what Disturbed did with sound of silence. they made it heavier and added weight to the Meaning of the song. they didn't outright erase the last one. it's just their style and they do their style amazingly
Many years later commenting. I have lived in an area where you could call it Semi-Rural. I literally hear a rooster call in the AM. I have known and visited the farmers that live in my area on and off since childhood. I have seen the stakes first hand if one has a bad crop year. No veggies, no dairy or meats, no money. It breaks my heart to see farmers and ranchers pitted against this every season. This song hits home and RA intro'd it to me when they first released it. Bob Dylan was in my household, just not a fixture. That needed to change. My kids will hear both Dylan and Rise Against whenever they are born.
Every little song, every little session, every little cover, every little show... All the things i can find that connected to this band is in my "Rise Against" folder... and will forever be in my heart
You know this is an amazing band when people actually think about what the band has to say. When the band stands for something more than just the music

It is sad that so many families are forced into such circumstances. But can't help but can't help but think about how we have brought so much of this on ourselves. The real tragedy is how future generations get stuck trying to clean up the mess from the past. But even as we try to find a way to save our way of life do we bother to ask if that way of life should be saved?
My family has lost its farm that has been in our possession for nearly 5 generations .Nothing but respect for our nations family's farms, keep fighting the good fight.
I felt the same way at first, but then I remembered this song was a cover so it wouldn't be fair if they won. We should feel proud that a rock cover resembling country music was nominated.
True, but it's sorta both ways, there's that, but it's good to see that people like rise against are aware of these problems and are trying to make a change and spread awareness, instead of making all their songs about love and sex that society is so obsessed with..... But then you read some of the comments down here --->the good feeling's gone
uhm you're saying it wrong dude, YOU think they are a crap band and there is a fcuking difference. i really like this band and there's no fucking need to take me down for liking it
A lot of people just ignore the problems. Worry about their own lives. They think it goes away because they stop thinking about the issues in our world. Tis Sad. I once tried bringing up an issue to a group of friends and the girl said. "I don't want to talk about that." :/
I totally agree it deserves it! If you love Rise Against, we’re looking to hear how music has created an impact in people and the world around them. Hey man, no joke I'm a small town American farmer out looking for a job since the farm closed. I spent fifteen years of my life pouring blood, sweat and tears into this profession. I'm out looking for a job now. To say I'm professionally proficient is an understatement. I'm fluent in three coding languages: three personal computer based and two mechanically based. I have HAZMAT certification. Full mechanical experience from small engine to big block diesel working on engines the size of your entire car, but yea... at this point I'll put up fence posts for minimum wage because my resume isn't worth a damn.... Damn....
Reminds me of my Grandfather Allan Meseck who is a retired farmer. Always had to be a hired hand just to make money & had to sell his land & recently, our farm. -TylerTragedy
No, if they don't have any fish; in kindness, give them fish. Then give them the tools and knowledge to fish. You missed the whole point of the video, please re-watch it. It says it in the beginning. "Not by hereditary, by circumstances." If you are born poor, where do you get the tools to fish?

Rise Against devotes a good part of thier profit and a bigger portion of thier time to aiding worthy charities. It might somehow slightly go against thier message, but I think they have still worked hard to get where they are as a band. If their hard work has provided them the opportunity to live well, then they would be fools not to reap the benefits of their efforts.
i live in South Dakota and it's bad here. I lived on a farm until i was 12 when we couldnt afford it anymore. It's really sad and i know of many people who took pride in there work on the farm that just cant afford it anymore. It's bad here

Pretty good version but the Bob Dylan version is one of my favorite songs of all time. The way the guitar slowly builds throughout the song perfectly matches the protagonists descent into madness.
To my mind, no amount of noise or screaming can match the intensity of the Nina Simone version of this song, live in 1966. Look it up and watch her being drawn completely into it, tension slowly building, oblivious to the audience when she finishes.
3/4 of the comments seem to be about "conservatives caused poverty" or "liberals caused poverty". We SHOULD be discussing, instead, on HOW to put an end to the issue that has a hold on so many people, rather than who caused the problem in the first place...
This song should have more views but people lack notion of the truth and wish for a better life like we all do. This is a great band and one of my motivation to be humantarian and politician. Got to make change for the best of the most not the rich!!
You can't expect one group to give up everything for families of others. They raise awareness and they donate to charities as well as host charity events. They do more than most to help others. Much more than any other band I know of. That would be similar to me asking you to feed me for a month. You can only do so much as one person. This band contributes more and more with the rise in popularity and I don't see how their instruments in which I am sure their label provides is consequential to
OMG people Rise Against didn't make the damn song and stop hating. -.- It is a cover of Bob Dylan's song. At least Rise Against actually gives a shit about this world. You may complain about the music they make and how stupid it sounds or how wrong it was but you'll never understand how much Rise Against tries to do to practice what they preach.
I almost say the same thing when when people make invalid arguments about how bad they think their music is. Not only are the vocal performances amazing, the instrumentals grip you like freezing rain. So many of Rise Against's songs toutch on real, serious issues and you're right in saying they practice what they preach. Look at "Help is on the way" Katrina was a fucking slaughter, but people have the audacity to say the music is terrible.
When other people cover your songs, that adds credibility to your creation. I don't think this version is better though. The singer sounds like he's about to puke. Listen to Dobro Dan's version. It's one of the best.
Dylan does this over and over again on the live stage, changes his originals constantly, many are so different from the originals... he never stands still
come on. i was into rise against as a kid, and i love the fact that they covered this, but this is just a simple rock version of a masterpiece. the emotion, the small deitals of the singing, dylans attitude in his voice... on guitar one man, recorded in the 60's simple sounding infrastucture, simple as the structure of the brown house might be. i think the covers are just more popular sounding - so more people likes tham.
Because Dylan has never and will never be good musician. He's one of the best songwriter there ever was and nobody can hope to top him, but he's not a good interpreter.
@@falloutworldrecord he is amazing though. i been to at least a dozen of his concerts. He played "blowin in the wind" in every concert, yet it was never the same song. He just comes up with ever new ideas how to play a song and the band (poor them) has to keep track. It is just an art form that i guess most of the "entertainment"-bands in the pop and rock business have not developed.
The truth is greater than anyone could understand because we have all be so ignorant from truth since we have been fed the lies since we were kids, the truth is right there its just so sufocating that everyone tries to ignore it, that is why the world is so fucked is because everyone has ignored the truth for so long
1 million views ??? only ??? thats what this video could get for telling us that poverty is a serious issue nowadays and we need to stop it cuz its not okay ?? huh ??? jesus christ wtf is wrong with this world ?!
Our world is dying because of us, we deserve everything we get, usa or not, we have the means to feed this whole planet but destroy all our resources and waterways and so n and so on, were doomed unless EVERY country does something...
Definitely, i'm proud too. But this was one of the most moving music videos I have seen through the past year. Sure the song wasnt original, but the music video was WOW I NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. I doubt Demi Lovato's music video, had that strong of a message.
I totally agree and that’s exactly what this project is about! I’m so grateful you think it’s moving, too. This is the most deepest and bloodrushing song that Rise Against has covered from Bob Dylan. This video, is the truth about what is going on. No one seems to care for these people up in South Dakota or anywhere, and how unfortunate they are for working so hard, but being paid so little. *sighs deeply* I want everyone to live a good life, I just cant stand to see people suffer
Tobs Sc. If it is a common interest there will eventually be someone to stand up for it and there will eventualyl be someone who reprents this interest politically, this is how democracy works. If people cared the change would happen so blaming government is just delusional bshit once again.
Living in Washington, I meet a lot of people like this every day.. My suggestion if you want to help those in poverty is to start small and volunteer or donate to your local food shelter.
This song is as awful as it is beautiful. It's a great song, but I truly wish it didn't have to have been made, let alone for a cover to have been made 50 years later. It is truly tragic.

i dont care what anybody says, but this deserved to win best video with a message in the VMA's. I know that rise against don't really worry about winning awards, but if more people saw this video clip (and make it stop), the world would be a better place
i love this music video both because of the issues around the argiculture and around the message of poverty. Both because ive experienced this first hand and its the most draining and stressful thing to deal with.
SpiderMax because it's the greatest country in the world besides you better off being poor in this country than you are middle-class and most others songs about 14 and a half percent of people and it's actually lower than that now 15% of people in any countries have a s*** life
+Anonymous hacker ...Yeah but every idiot can work on a farm, they are totally replacable. the "Rich people" (lol, always sounds as if there was some kind of "rich people club" where they grow money trees on the tears of the poor, while sitting in comfy chairs) have usually gone through an education that justifies their high income, since they are not as easily replaced. So yeah, they souldn't have it better, they should have better chances on advanced education.
+gorgonee that's currently the problem in the USA. Everyone should have the same chances when born. Rich or poor, black or white, foreign or native. the problem in the USA is that it's the only western country in which this isn't the case at the moment as every college/university is extremely expensive which makes it near impossible for the poor to build themselves up. In Europe college costs a max of like 2k a year (people whos parents earn less then 30k a year combined get around 400 euro's a month from the government aswell (which makes college profitable). where high school and pre school are completely free (private schools obviously cost more). this means that the entire education of a child costs their parents around 8k in total which is nothing compared to the changes in salary this brings when compared to someone without an education.
runo35k Actually, depends what Europe are we discussing, cause here in Poland education is completely free, except the books. Though you don't need to buy books in college.
This is the most stupid thing ever. You realize being a farmer means you have alot of capital? If you lose it all, you'll be in heavy debt. Fuck your free market and your shrimp brain. Keep eating your unhealthy shit food because you don't wanna pay more for good farmers.
As you watch this video, remember that Capitalism creates all of these things in the name of profits. And yet you defend Capitalism because it is the "American Way"? Who's American Way? The rich man or the poor man's American Way? Agiter, subvertir, libérer.

Monsanto and factory farms (Meatvideo dotcom) are lowering our food quality and putting small better farms out of business. Vegan will not harm jobs, they can grow crops so no excuses for cooked flesh and baby cows milk today...it will also help our health/care, environment and even reduce hunger (every 10lbs of corn/grains fed to chickens/pigs in tiny cruel cages-so get fatter, only yields 1lb of flesh in return is very wasteful. Animals are actually well fed while people go hunger - bs greed)

Maybe I'm really stupid but, I think we, workers who make the system work, should get a free fucking house. I'm not talking $300 000 mansion. Just 4 walls and a roof. No need for basement or extra stories. If it wasn't for the poor, there would be no rich. Having a house is so essential to life. Once again, it's because we work that the system works. If not it would be chaos. Don't we deserve this?
I figured, this isnt a typical Rise Against song. I never insinuated that they did write it. I just meant on their videos they have the discussions. In general. So, thanks for pointing that out.
There needs to be a concert... Oh i got!!! Rise against, Rage, Flobots, and any other righteous preaching bands need to do a HUGE concert in protest in DC!!!
Tim's delivery of "7 shotgun shells" always gives me absolute chills

I remember that summer--was working in Wisconsin on a prairie-restoration job. Everything was dying, and one of our neighbors struck a spark off of a rock when he was harvesting wheat. By the time he turned around at the end of the row, about 10 acres were already burning; I don't know how much he lost in total.
The sad thing is. This song was relevant 8 years ago. And now it's gonna be relevant for the next 4 years.
This Song ist relevant when a Repubican ist President and when a Demokrat is President. The Problems are the Same.
I came upon this by accident. My all time favorite Dylan song - Well Done!
A respectable cover of one of Dylan's most powerful songs.
Dear Rise Against,
Thank you for opening more people's eyes to the injustices that take place in this world every day. And making great music along with it.
The song is by Bob Dylan, but this is a good modern cover that illustrates how (unforunately) relevant this song still is.
I grew up on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania and this is EXACTLY what it was like. Pop Pops gone now and so are the cows. Dad and I work in a factory today......this hits home. America, what are you coming to?

That's the goal. Let's it get it out on every social media website. It's all in the power of 'word of mouth.'
50 years. This song is over 50 years old. The fact that it's message still rings true is disgusting
+michael jennette You smoke shit bro right?

Talha Zohor bahahahaha
Are you by any chance from an ex-communist country (i somehow doubt someone in a communist country could watch this video now...)? If not, then let me trow some light over it: people were waiting for hours in order to buy a couple of bananas; they were trampling one another so they could be the first to buy a chicken (all this while the country was having a decent production, enough to feed them all properly)
Capitalism is by far the best economic system we (humans) have developed, allowing all people to prosper (or to fail), so you should think twice and learn more before talking about "eradicating" the capitalism
Capitalism is good with common sense regulation, mixed in with some socialism in areas that shouldn't be for profit (healthcare, education, police and fire department, army).
Either of the extremes is bad
God, I got shivers all over my spine.
Body's aching all the time?
Haven't really checked out Rise Agaimst since siren songs but seeing that Dylan cover is freaking awesome.
Much respect to them.
Great remake of the Dylan classic. Thank you for making this song relevant to today.
This songs story will always be relevant and repeating.
Was it not relevant before?
i dont know how this video has eluded me for 6 years... amazing song, amazing cover, and amazing video. this message too often goes overlooked because no one is really aware of what is happening out in rural areas - they just expect produce to appear on their plates.
How do we offer support? May I ask how you are doing now? And..
If you love Rise Against, we’re looking to hear how music has created an impact in people and the world around them.

yeah i agree with you 100%.

Excellent! speaks the truth of my area as well. The farmer I work for is struggling himself hardcore.
if you're not angry you're not listening
Am I allowed to just be sad?
sadness is anger without action
We need to get angry
Good quote
@@joshrobinson8360 sadness is knowing that actions will cause more anger
I think there would be more humanistic people in this world if we all realized we're all in this together, but we all have our own struggles to deal with. So many of you think you know it all about complete strangers. Just remember we all take life at our own stride. What you see as no big deal, another may see as the worst thing that ever happened. Respect and love one another. It'll make it easier for all of us together.
Rise Against is the perfect band to do this cover
I'm pretty sure no band will top rise against in my life time. They make some of the best music out there and raise awareness for so many different things that REALLY matter in life.
Knowing the context of this song makes me love it 1000x more. So friggin' good.
Honestly this is the best rendition of the song I've heard
All the things i can find that connected to this band
is in my "Rise Against" folder...
and will forever be in my heart
I'd love to see this song live
This is why Rise Against is amazing. A band with a cause, and lyrics with a reason. Keep doing your best Rise against, We all love you.
The time you can help will not come, the time you can help is now and here!
Best Bob Dylan song ever, and you just made it better! Thanks! :)
This is the only song I can listen to over and over again, and get chills every time.
You know this is an amazing band when people actually think about what the band has to say. When the band stands for something more than just the music

"There's seven people dead on a North Dakota farm"
Chills...
I'm pretty sure he says South Dakota but you can change it to North if you want I guess
RaiderNationTV I like North Dakota better
And somewhere in the distance there's 7 new people born.
No it's definitely a south Dakota farm, great version but Bob's is truly haunting.
The last line is the most chilling...
There's something redeeming, true & beautiful about a rock video more about the people of the land, than the band (in focus).
Ra have some loyal fans ... They are awesome and don't need no award to prove it. ...
Music for the people....
I love this video and song. Such a powerful message! Rise Against and the video director did such an amazing job bringing that point home!
Last time I heard this song was years ago, made it hit pretty hard right now
I don't know why but when I listen Rise Against songs I just lose hope in humanity
True, but it's sorta both ways, there's that, but it's good to see that people like rise against are aware of these problems and are trying to make a change and spread awareness, instead of making all their songs about love and sex that society is so obsessed with.....
But then you read some of the comments down here --->the good feeling's gone
its co's they are a crap band,
uhm you're saying it wrong dude, YOU think they are a crap band and there is a fcuking difference. i really like this band and there's no fucking need to take me down for liking it
All right, I laughed. Have an upvote.
A lot of people just ignore the problems. Worry about their own lives. They think it goes away because they stop thinking about the issues in our world. Tis Sad. I once tried bringing up an issue to a group of friends and the girl said. "I don't want to talk about that." :/
I wish I lived in California...I'd hire that man in a heartbeat..
EVERYONE GO VOTE FOR RISE AGAINST SO THEY CAN WIN DAMMIT!!
These guys better win the "Best Message" thing in the VMA's. Definitely deserves it.

No, if they don't have any fish; in kindness, give them fish. Then give them the tools and knowledge to fish. You missed the whole point of the video, please re-watch it. It says it in the beginning. "Not by hereditary, by circumstances." If you are born poor, where do you get the tools to fish?

Because people would much rather hear a soothing lie than a hard truth.
I wonder if dyllan himself ever listned to this very good cover of his song

A crushing video of a cover RA absolutely crushed. Amazing.
3:12 goosebumps

Cant really fix a problem if you don't know what causes it. Nice sentiment tho
Why this comment doesn't have more likes, I will never know...
the problem is, in order for a capitalist society to work, poor people must exist...
Right...I agree.
Of course. But we know what causes it. They're discussing who caused it. Or to be more honest, looking for someone to blame.
just when i thought i had never heard a more moving song than the original... Still so relevant, bob you legend.
You are awesome, my friend. Summed up everything I say when people say Rise Against make shitty music.
Amen!
I adore Bob Dylan. I think he's the best songwriter ever.
But it just seems weird that covers sound better than his originals...

I love Rise Against, and this is a great example why.

This is why i loved rise against lyrics like this.
Living in Washington, I meet a lot of people like this every day.. My suggestion if you want to help those in poverty is to start small and volunteer or donate to your local food shelter.

this is sad, they should have it better than rich people do cause they are feeding us
+Anonymous hacker ...Yeah but every idiot can work on a farm, they are totally replacable. the "Rich people" (lol, always sounds as if there was some kind of "rich people club" where they grow money trees on the tears of the poor, while sitting in comfy chairs) have usually gone through an education that justifies their high income, since they are not as easily replaced.
In Europe college costs a max of like 2k a year (people whos parents earn less then 30k a year combined get around 400 euro's a month from the government aswell (which makes college profitable). where high school and pre school are completely free (private schools obviously cost more). this means that the entire education of a child costs their parents around 8k in total which is nothing compared to the changes in salary this brings when compared to someone without an education.
and you're the poor man, speaking from his computer watching music videos
runo35k Actually, depends what Europe are we discussing, cause here in Poland education is completely free, except the books.
The rich man or the poor man's American Way?

for sure my favourate music video its just so touching it makes u want to make a difference
I totally agree and that’s exactly what my project is about! If you love Rise Against, we’re looking to hear how music has created an impact in people and the world around them.

Are you kidding me? Tim Mcllrath is awesome, and Bob Dylan is great. What's wrong with covering someone else's damn song?
Maybe I'm really stupid but, I think we, workers who make the system work, should get a free fucking house. I'm not talking $300 000 mansion. Just 4 walls and a roof. No need for basement or extra stories. If it wasn't for the poor, there would be no rich. Having a house is so essential to life. Once again, it's because we work that the system works. If not it would be chaos. Don't we deserve this?
The most farms are in the tornado zones, so a basemebt would probably be fair ^^
+Keven Klayne Vote for Keven! Too bad we probably won't ever have a non masonic US govermenet.
+Keven Klayne which is why the people need to rise up and overthrow the elite.
