Hey gang, totally got it wrong when I was talking about modified vs. unmodified. We probably shot that clip 3 times and I still screwed it up :( Thx to those of you who pointed out my error. Please see: www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/faq/shower-system-kerdi-thin-set-mortar-type We used Schluter All Set on this project; a modified thinset approved for use under and over their Kerdi products: www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/Setting-Materials/Schluter-ALL-SET%C2%AE/p/SET_ALL-SET
It used to be unmodified then they changed it to modified once the videos started rolling in showing how it was failing. Glad everyone here helped out wit that.
@@sroberds640 Exactly. They recommended unmodified at first. I guess somebody got to do a tear out and remodel on those showers I did 15 years ago. It was a steam shower so the entire enclosure including the ceiling was done with kerdi unmodified underneath. It was supposed to last a lifetime. Damn them. The kerdi band is to further insure the seam is covered from leaks. Hope they don't have a problem.
I'm a 70yo semi retired carpenter who has seen everything and I do mean everything! But rarely have I seen this level of craftsman ship and attention to detail. Liked and subscribed.
Cherish this time with your pops. I did the same when I was younger. He's since passed but the lessons I learned on job sites and the time I spent with him I think about almost daily. Also, great content!
Love that you guys are a father/son team. My dad used to be in this line of work, but I was too immature to care. Never cared and never bothered to learn. He passed away in 04' and I just recently bought a house that needs a remodel. I plan on doing everything myself...what I wouldn't give for my dad to be next to me for guidance.
You can never do too much waterproofing in a shower area or a tub with a deck. Great job gang. Also I would tile everything on the surround the same as the floor.
Really like this series with this bathroom! Just found your channel by chance and loving it. Always nice to see a father and son working together and always seeing everything is made as good as it gets. Best Regards from Sweden
Glad I found this channel, I'm a DIY'er usually working on my own home. Finally a channel that shows the work actually being done, not just a quick description followed by a shot of the finished product. Subscribed and liking it, thank you. Already learning a lot of good techniques.
Tile failure is from grout failure. Keep tiles tite with small Grout joints. Double check all Grout joints. After Grout dries for several days you must use sealer on all Grout joints. Two Coats. Every 3-4 yrs reseal Grout joints. GREAT JOB GUYS ‼️
The detail and thought you give to each aspect of your work gives so much insight to someone learning. Thank you for doing it the best and smartest way and sharing your knowledge
Love this channel! Better every day. I’ve been running a business with my dad for almost 20 years now. So glad I chose the path I’m on. Keep up the great work.
I'm not much on reverse laps with Kerdi. Even though they recommend doing the walls before the floor. I always do the floor first, then Kerdi band, then the walls. So it all overlaps, so it water ever did get behind it, it would overlap like doing a roof. I'm probably just over thinking it, and don't really trust thinset as a water tight seal. Enjoy the channel, from what I've seen you do great work. 👍
I'm an old retired home repair and renovation guy. I learned from a tile man 45 years ago how to do mud work and that is what I always did. I like this new Kerdi stuff but I'm wondering about expansion and contraction and how the corners fare.
Another great video guys. And Jordan scored bonus points! Most contractors would say "I forgot the blocking-oh well." The real professional loses sleep until he fixes it-wow!

I like it when the shower doesn't have the curb and floor is sloped to the shower. I would also tile the side of the tub. Happy Christmas and New Year.
14:13 - funny - for years, before they had their own thin set, we were told that you are supposed to use ONLY UNMODIFIED thin set to apply Kerdi. Even then I was using modified - never had an issue with either. Now, this Schluter All Set puts an end to the endless conversations and it is a great cement, I love it for installing the Ditra Heat on plywood - that always made me nervous before. Greetings for Vancouver, Canada !
Straightline Tiling & waterproofing Australia .Would recommend waterproofing a small angle under inside of bath lip perimeter! to stop water tracking under bath lip ! Alluminium or plastic angle 1x1 inch or size to fit ! Then silicone bath to tile perimeter !
Glad your Kerdi install went fine. I had issues over the cement board unless I wet it down first. Would suck all the water out of the thinset and poor adhesion. Was using Mapai unmodied though. The all set seems to be much better and stickier.
Good afternoon. You and your Son work well together. I wish I had that bond with my Dad. That kerdi and detra is great stuff. I'll bet that waterproofing was 600.00 usd or more. I have that in my master bath. Keep up the great work.
Love this remodel. I’m going to emulate it along with all the pearls is wisdom so I don’t make a costly mistake. Only thing I’d change is the tub. The owners had an opportunity to get a bigger tub, perhaps with jets & they chose to put the old one in. It would have easy to upgrade.
Hi guys. I've been watching your videos on bathroom renovation and I've learned quite a lot from it. I'm planning on renovating our main bathroom by removing the tub to allow my mother-in-law easy access to take a shower. Also, I'd like to remove the shower insert in our master bath. In doing so, I'd like to tile both bathrooms from; floors and walls. My question is, which direction do you recommend I take? 1) Should I chip out the slop, or 2) Utilize the Schluter slope pan? Obviously one go for the easiest process, but which do you recommend is best? The other thing is, I don't like to have a curb on the entry point on both bathroom. I prefer to install a glass wall/door. Your thoughts? Thanks for your advice in advance.
Very nice job. For additional safety I would have installed two 2x4 supports on the left and right side of the tub surround. People tend to walk or sit on the edges.
great thinking and super great year for your channel tooo .... eager to see the projects you guys do next year! edit: as I understand it .... UNmodified thinset is what Shluter requires for behind the membrane and for setting tiles on the membrane.
Hey I just started watching your channel and I really like it. Makes me want to return to construction work after being at a desk job for over a year(YUCK!). My only suggestion is could you put the name of the job in the title of the video that way we can follow each project from start to finish? I know for me RUclips doesn’t always bing the subsequent video up in recommendations. Thank you sir! God Bless your business.
SO did you do the drywall work behind the on the wall with the window behind the shower?I'm jw as did you use cement board there also it has lime in it so no mold ever. And the electrical switch I don't know where it was but it can't be in reach from the shower when everything is complete. But it looks like you did an amazing job with the kerdi and the cement board i seen here. Great video.
I always put my floor tile in first grout it then mask it off with card board and red rosin paper untill I get the walls tiled and grouted I would think you would want to leave the bottom 6 to 8 inches of your kurdi membrane with no thin set so as to tie your floor into it .over top your pre sloped membrane but I like to float my floor and I'm a big fan of red guard 👍🏻looks good thought ,nice work ✌🏻🗽🇺🇸
Tile that bad boy. And that hand saw is a young man’s game. Get Jordan on that job Paul! Hahaha. Good stuff. Slick tip at the beginning and on the backer board slope.
I realize this is an older video but I just found your channel and I'm bing watching all your videos! What a team you are. You both do amazing work!! I have a Kerdi question! I was just about to pull the plug on a whole Kerdi system for my tub to shower conversion and I was looking at the Kerdi board. Do you see any major benefits to using cement board and the Kerdi membrane versus using the Kerdi board? I'm only doing 3x6 subway tiles on the shower walls so I am not supporting thick heavy tiles. I just think the Kerdi board will be easier for a DIY tile setter (me)😁hauling the boards up the tight staircase as well as the ease of cutting. I also think using the Kerdi bands to tape the seams and the screws will be easier than trying to mud the whole wall applying a membrane. Anyway thanks so much for a great channel and such informative content!
Paul, I believe you misspoke on the thinset. Schluter wants an unmodified thinset under the kerdi if unless it's a schluter thinset. Did you consider just using kerdi board? Thats what I did in my 6x6x6 shower directly to studs. Still waiting for access panel.
I did Michael and thx for catching that. I pinned a comment to correct my error. We shot that clip 3 times at least... I've never tried Kerdi board but would like to. Access panel still in the design stage 😂
Love the video - quick editing comment - the music is a lot louder (in volume) compared to your voices. So I keep having to lower the volume whenever you are playing music and increase it back whenever you are talking. Might just be me, but thought I'd mention it. Keep up the awesome work gang - cheers.
Actually - unmodified/modified will work on top of wonderboard since so porous but need unmodified on top of Kerdi membrane or Schluter new modified or all-set which also is their designed product which is freeze-thaw resistant in the attic of North America where we have snow shovels and use them often
Hi guys, I've been watching your videos and I've been learning a lot from it. I'm thinking about renovating our bathrooms. I want to remove the tub from our main bathroom and the shower insert
Would i have to do the same water proofing method using schluter or aqua defense on the floor after installing cement boards on my subfloor or can i get away with covering my seams and joints with mesh and thin set on my cement boards and be done with it?
Great job. Liking his channel more and more. I can not find the Blue float you spoke about in any box or tile store. The Orange store wants me to wait for a week or more and I have a bathroom floor to do next week. Keep up the good work, you guys are great.
Have you considered using the ZIP system for bathroom construction? Sub floors, Shower walls, tub decks like this one? I appreciate the extra effort on the slope plywood, you can also use A piece of cedar siding if you can find it at your local supplier, good for windows too
Zip sheathing by Huber? Never seen it used in bathrooms. That could work 👍 Thought of a piece of siding but by the time I run all over town looking for some...
Love the channel and work. From someone who does a lot of tile try one of the big egg beater mixers for thinset. Fast easy mixing all the way to the bottom. The spiral paint mixers suck for mud. Merry Christmas all!!
I have one Mike but forgot it at home. I've found that when I use it for grout that bits of colored plastic from the sides of the bucket end up in the grout. It would be fine for thinset though.
Hey , brother! Thats great work! As a long time pro tile setter, its great to see people that care about their customers. Getting to be a rare thing.lol . You should check out the Wedi system. For less time and effort than it took you to install the cement board, you could have a much better product than the schluter. Plus the wedi doesn't deform your flat walls ,like the schluter does, thereby saving time on the tile install. Keep up the great work, bro!
Excellent job and video. The only thing I would of done different is with the tub platform framing. On the back side of your tub opening I would of layout the studs to leave a cavity centered on the tub. I know your mindset because I have it too, you like symmetrical. This will probably be where the tub filler goes. Maybe not, just a thought. I recommend wearing gloves. Thanks for taking time making these video's.
Perfect as a back up I would of also put a liquid waterproof system over the awsome job you guys did. This is just my personal preference when doing water areas
Others have commented on this also. Putting a non-Schluter liquid membrane over the Kerdi would void the Schluter warranty IMO. I'll check with my district rep about it.
I wouldn't mind taking their class. Should I learn to tile first then take it, or would it be possible to learn the principles without knowing yet. buying a house in April.
Next time you should try some kerdi board. It is super light and installs really fast. You could even use the 2” thick for the tub deck top and skip the plywood all together
Why did you use cement board for the shower walls? I used just regular drywall on mine and then used the Kerdi over that. This was 7 years ago and I haven’t have a single issue since.
My new favorite home improvement channel on RUclips, hands down. Great production, focused information and enjoyable hosts. I understand that you didn’t want to damage new shower flooring while you prepped the walls for tile. I’ve seen other shower installs where they stress the importance of completing the floor before the walls. What are your thoughts on this? Does the kurdi eliminate that concern?
Yes, kerdi doesn't have to lap like roof shingles. I did the floor first once with cardboard protection over the kerdi while I did the walls but the membrane still got abraded a bit and I didn't like that.
I love the attention to detail! Great job. Only question I had was about the shower floor pan. Don’t you need to do that first so when you run the wall membrane, it would overlap the top of the pan membrane? Now, the wall will be behind the pan. If I explained that correctly? Lol.
Thx Chris! Schulter Kerdi does not need to overlap - that's part of the appeal of this system. It's REALLY difficult for me not to lap but if they're going to warranty the installation, I'm good.
Remodeling contractor for 44 years in NorCal. Just want to say that you put together some nice videos, that do an excellent job of explaining the job without talking down to your audience. Well done! ( Btw, I vote for tile on the front of the surround. Introducing wood, no matter how well sealed and adhered, is in my experience asking for trouble down the road. )
Love your production values and the soundtrack. I am assuming you guys are using royalty free music tracks, just curious about where you're getting them.
If I was just installing a drop in corner soaking tub that only has barely any frame overhang along the wall and 3” or less tile overhang on the front, is that amount of waterproofing really necessary under the tile surround? How much water could possibly splash out. Faucet is on the front side of the tub so water cant get trapped. Is what you are doing overkill?
did you guys waterproof the inside of the tub's framework as well? I'm asking bc once I had an issue with the connection of tubes and it could've flooded under it to the concrete base

I use that liqulock in the tank as well. Keeps that last little bit from splashing down and deactivating the gel in the bowl. Expensive though.
Buy a roto zipper mate!
Also a sidenote, I fully endorse this water proofing system. I work with those guys at the schluter company a lot. Great guys.
Just saw the pocket screw holes on the tub framing ...outstanding! Why no treated in framing Lumber though??
The sill is treated. I didn't see the point elsewhere.

This will probably be where the tub filler goes. Maybe not, just a thought. I recommend wearing gloves. Thanks for taking time making these video's.
Good catch Tim! We're re-using the existing tub and the faucet is mounted to it but that's a great tip for next time 👍
Did you add any insulation and vapor plastic in the cavity behind that wonder board in the wall? Why or why not? Thanks!
Insulation yes. Vapor plastic no. The Schluter Kerdi is the vapor barrier.
Thx Luis 👊👍
Nice watching masters at work!
Great videos. I do the same kind of work on Kauai. Something different almost every day. Aloha
Dude! You are a Rockstar! What kind of floor anchors were those?
Search for split drive anchors. Simpson makes one and so does Hillman. 1/4” x 3” I think
I wouldn't mind taking their class. Should I learn to tile first then take it, or would it be possible to learn the principles without knowing yet. buying a house in April.
I'm retiling bathroom that has a tub. Do I need to waterproof the floor? If so, do I waterproof the subfloor or hardibacker underlayment? Thx!
Next time you should try some kerdi board. It is super light and installs really fast. You could even use the 2” thick for the tub deck top and skip the plywood all together
Thx Tyler. Until recently it’s been kinda hard to get locally. Definitely going to try it. I used it at Schluter class pretty awesome 👍
Looks like a solid job. U seem to pay attention to details
GREAT REVIEW WATER PROOFING BATHROOM
Why did you use cement board for the shower walls? I used just regular drywall on mine and then used the Kerdi over that. This was 7 years ago and I haven’t have a single issue since.
awesome craftsmanship..
can u tell me where to get a pocket hole jig like the one u have?
Kreg jigs of various kinds are available at all the big box stores. Amazon has them too.
Putting the grab bar blocking is really forward thinking.
Actually Code in Canada. We're all getting old faster and need help to stay in our houses
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate your time and insight.
@@StudPack ok, I guess I’ll wait to see how you connect the pan liner to the walls.
Remodeling contractor for 44 years in NorCal. Just want to say that you put together some nice videos, that do an excellent job of explaining the job without talking down to your audience. Well done! ( Btw, I vote for tile on the front of the surround. Introducing wood, no matter how well sealed and adhered, is in my experience asking for trouble down the road. )
Thx P R!! Lived in Ventura for a while. Made it up north a few times. Love it up there and the central coast 👍👍
Learning a lot. Thanks for the video
Love your production values and the soundtrack. I am assuming you guys are using royalty free music tracks, just curious about where you're getting them.
Excellent work! Keep making these videos 👍👍👍
Is there a reason that you put wonderboard behind the Kerdi? Can’t the Kerdi be adhered to drywall? Thanks!
I like cement board for strength. Drywall is approved by Schluter but I just can’t 😬
