Hi Jay maybe make it midi length but I would lose the white tie and replace it with the same fabric as what the dress is made from as that’s where my eye was drawn to rather than the actual dress. I don’t think the dress is that bad.

Also, replying to myself now 😅, if you still want to make the Wilder gown after this, you could consider making it in sheer/semi-sheer chiffon (and wearing something underneath, maybe 😅). This way you don't loose your body/shape completely. I'm thinking of doing this with the Fibre mood Mira. 😘
Good morning Jay, you obviously love the style so I suggest shortening below the bodice, that way the pockets will be in the right spot. The length makes the piece look like a night gown so go shorter. You might want to change the white bits to black. I enjoy watching your channel and SEW ON!!! Judy
I think first try option C. Also I agree with others the white tie bothers me, black would be better and not as long. I think you hit the nail on the head with this pattern and that is proportion is key to making it work for you. I think the Stitch Sisters made this pattern and both were lovely. If C doesn't work you could then go for the mini length (Baby Doll look). You'd look great in that too!

I think you are right about length and volume but I think the Wilder gown's success really depends on the fabric choice. I love the print you chose but I can't see the structure of the dress and I think that's key. That said, you've thought of three great options but I would love to see #3. Mostly because I couldn't quite conceptualize what you're thinking and I'd love to see it in real life.

Ok, now I love the fabric you know I’m a print gal, I just don’t think it works for this pattern, I don’t think you can see the features of the tiers and I think either a plain (which I know isn;t really you) or a bigger spaced out print so you can see the design more. As others have said the white tie neck doesn’t; work, but it was definitely worth a try, I think a midi length or even mini would work better on your delicate frame, with some chunky boots and tights, I have bought this myself and in all honesty I’m dreading making it! I think the promo shots and some of the staged shots on instagram of makers who’ve made this show it can look beautiful, but how wearable is it?, I’m not sure, as always Jay, I love how you show your fails, we learn so much from things that don’t quite work out rather than things that go well all the time xxx
I agree with Rachel JJ regarding your Wilder Gown, I think this dress suits a more plain fabric, it would look great in a double gauze especially with some decoration on it, Rachel made a top from some of it. You must be so disappointed, since seeing your vlog I am having second thoughts about making this gown (I haven't purchased the pattern as yet...), I do love the fabric too, love to Betsey and Rachel love to Pluto

In my opinion these dresses only work at knee length or above; otherwise they always just look frumpy. I would shorten it and see how you like that with the pockets at a comfortable place. Personally I would add a bias binding visible trim in red on the hem, make the sleeves 3/4 length and replace the tie with a shorter one in red. Then it would be you.
I would try c and also change the colour of the necktie; either self fabric or black. If you try c and it doesn’t work you can always chop it to mini length or donate it. Good luck, I’m going to try the myosotis dress as my ‘out of comfort zone’ waffty dress.
I've absolutely fallen in love with the Wilder Gown. ❤️ I agree with many others, I simply think this might not be the best choice of fabric for such a flowy dress. I went with a Gingham Gauze. It makes the Gathers show nicely. Additionally I've stitched the bodice / skirt seam upwards and fed a thin tieband through. So I can adjust the fit however I like.
Agree with several posters that the print hides all the details and it then swamps you. Wonder if a short knee length or above knee would salvage the dress. We have all been there when a pattern doesn't turn out the way we imagine. Alas, I am generally not a salvager so would pass it on to charity. You do a great job sewing despite this one!!
C. I think you can save it. I would start by shortening the bodice and see if that's enough to fix the pocket issue. But I agree that midi length is probably better for you and would look great with boots.
Option C. I made a black rayon wilder gown. I'm 5'9, and its long on me! I lengthened the bodice, as I wanted to wear a belt so I wasn't so overwhelmed by the amount of fabric. And I didn't want to feel frumpy. But the fabric is a wee bit sheer so I need to wear something underneath! Not ideal in a tropical climate! As it's totally black, I've had a few comments about 'going for a Victorian nun' kinda vibe. I do like it, but have to wear it open at the neck so there's a break from the black. I do wear it with sneakers, and I do like it 😜 it's just a big statement dress to wear to work!
I think 5 inches shorter sounds good! (But it is very voluminous and reminds me of all my “nightgowns”. ) But whatever you do I’m sure you’ll do a fabulous job!
JJ, do C! It's not bad on you it just needs perfecting. Get rid of the lace tie & use self fabric. It is far too long on you. I don't think you need to change the volume. I think its fine. Look forward to seeing what you do with it.xx
I vote for trying to redeem it because then you’ll know if that style and possible future dream dresses could work. And then the other two options are still available if it doesn’t work.
Hi Jay! I say start with C and if needed keep going backwards to A. I tend to chose the most labor intensive route .... I like to see all the options plus I always learn something along the way. It does seem like I put the MOST work into trying to salvage a mediocre piece. Nowadays I just set it aside for awhile before I make a move to see how I feel about the whole project. I want to love the waffty dresses, too! They are so different, I think we are just not adapted. If it were me, I would: replace the white tie with a dark one, shorten the bodice, start waffting. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for sharing your less successful makes. I think it depends how much you loved the pattern. You'll know in your gut if it's worth the effort to make it work. I'd change the tie to darker I think then option C. If you're heart s not in it just donate though!! Ooo also I live my new steamy iron, thanks for your recommendation!!
Echoing what others say. The dress overwhelms you - too long and too much fabric...and the white tie and frilly trims emphasise the 'nightie' look. Thanks for being brave enough to share. It's always so reassuring to see that others have disaster makes too. Xxx 💖💖

I definitely think you can make this work for you Jay so I vote option c... In my humble opinion the following would help... Firstly the colour of the tie... I think it would be better in a dark colour and a thinner/less ornate tape... I also think it might work better left open or tied more loosely because like me you are gifted in the buzooms dept and higher necks aren't always flattering. A bit of uncovered chest balances things a bit...I know the high neck is a feature of the wilder but what's the point of sewing if we cant adapt to suit... 2. Definitely shorten the bodice and the top panel of the skirt. 3. It may work better shorter...
I confess I didn’t read everyone’s replies. What if you switch the bow from around your neck to around the empire waist? That will cinch it in and make it seem more fitted. Pockets, shmockets, replace them only if you want to. Midi length would look really cute with some lace up granny boots. I’m still chuckling over “gesturing with a banana.”😂
I endorse option B. I think it has great potential for you and I love the fabric. Agree that the tie and cuff finishes don't look right, at all, and that a shorter style will work better.
I think you should take off the bottom tier and make your adjustments to the tier with your pockets and see how you like it. Also maybe shorten the ties. 😊
I agree with others that it swamps you. I’d go for option B, shorten it and change to a black tie rather than white. I think this style even on the tall and willowy can look like a nightie! Look forward to seeing what happens 😀
Can't believe you are showing the Wilder Gown. Just saw it before your video and thought of you! Love the fabric, love the dress detail at the neck and sleeve! You are swimming in dress! Dress seems too long and too wide from armpit down. Love bow idea but proportionally it is too long for your frame. White is good for it or black as some have suggested. Jay-ify that dress, girl!! :)
HI! Right away I see that it should be sized down one or two sizes. Next, I would shorten it a lot!! Lastly the ribbon you used I think it is overwhelming you, and adding to that "granny" look. I would suggest a narrower ribbon-and I think I would use self fabric for that tie-or change it to a black-or black and white muted print. Then, I think you may like it much better. The whole thing, is simply too much for your body!! Take it in or re-cut it. Let us know and see what happens!! :+) I have heard that others went down one to two sizes, and liked the fit much better. HTH!! :+) Also remove the white trim off sleeves-and wear it tied more loosely at the neck-I've even seen it completely untied, with just the ties hanging down. That might help you a bit.
Yup, the current frock does nothing for you. Agree with many others that white tie is a no-no and the length drowns you. So suggest try the B solution. Good Luck!!!
Hi, It's me, weeks late as usual. I think that option 1 is the best. I like the fuller, floaty dresses but they do not suit me, like me I think you are small framed and easily swamped. Although my post menapause middle is hardly small! I am only 5th 2in and in summer made the Alix dress, adding tiers to the top version. I can just about get away with it because it has a fitted waist. Thanks for doing these videos.
🤣🤣🤣 how to lighten a dreary Sunday morning- well not that dreary - Wales beat Australia in the rugby!👏🏻 The dress looks lovely fabric is good, and the ruffle around the neck really suits you Jay! I’m not an expert but I think the problem comes, as you suggest with the proportions being off, so adjusting the tiers and shortening to a midi length add some Docs and your are on to a winner! But my first thought at the start of the video was that the white tie just emphasises all the points you feel are not working for you. If it were in the same fabric or black I think it would change your whole perspective. But love the shoulders and neckline. Definitely on trend! Another good vlog!
Your so right about the proportion problem. I made a Wilder blouse and was so disappointed. The raglan sleeve creates a droopy look in the bodice, with the fabric hanging low under the arm. I think even if you shorten the dress, the bodice still has a proportion problem. I’m going to try again with Butterick 6487, which has a set in sleeve. If I like it better, I’ll add a skirt and make it a dress.

I love the fabric and the dress! But I think it drowns your frame and my eyes are just drawn to the white tie and cuffs. I would just remove the bottom tier and use the fabric to replace the tie (I’d make it a little shorter too) and cuffs. I think the style does suit you though x
Glad to see you disscuss your struggles with this pattern thank you!. Everyone on SM seems to love it but I just thought it looked like a big nightie. I don't know how tall you are but you seem to have a petite frame and I think that in its current state the dress totally swamps you and looks a bit frumpy (sorry) - I made the Charlie Kaftan having seen so many lovely versions on IG but it looked like a frumpy nightie on me so that's what it became 🙄 I agree with a few other: mid length, undo the neck bow and have it loose and open, maybe wear it with a belt or tie to show that you have some shape under it, also it's bo-ho type dress so styling your hair loose and down rather than in a top-knot could match the aesthetic more faithfully. I think if a person is tall and broad shouldered this dress would hang well and wouldn't be swamping, narrow shouldered ladies have to be careful about where the distribution of balance is in a garment. I'm certain you will be able to salvage this dress and make it look fabulous on you 💕
I would have a go at C, I think the neckline looks really pretty on you, BUT I really don't like the white bow I'm afraid. I think if you turn it into a more baby doll type style it would be more you. As for the tie, I'd try black, may be a bit of black velvet ribbon if you have any knocking around? Thanks though for sharing. Like everyone else who commented it's so interesting to see the highs AND the lows.
I would go for c.I think the main issue is the white tie,it just stands out in the wrong way.It should be a black tie and not in a lace to make it look more modern and not so long that it overtakes the dress..I also think it would look good with a wide leather belt to emphasise your waist.If you want to wear it loose I think it definitely needs to be midi length and wear it with black boots.Also,maybe the fabric does not have enough stability.The main thing is you have to feel right in your dress.It doesn't matter what anyone thinks as long as you feel right.
May I suggest you cut it to ankle length, take out some fulness, replace the white tie with a 1/2" black velvet ribbon. Put on black suede ankle boots and good to go.
I’ve made the top twice in linen and love it. I do not wear the neck gathered tight around my neck but open and tied. It looks chic and stylish and definitely not prairie-style, though.The Stitch Sisters demonstrated a great way to wear the full length dress by using a wide belt around the waist and leaving the neck untied and open like a peasant blouse. It’s a tough dress to wear probably for most people.Your tie and cuffs would be better in the same fabric so as to not draw attention to them...the entire look should be the focus. Hope you can salvage it and enjoy your efforts. Thank you for the honest review/experience.
Definitely option B. What about short sleeves. Not sure about the bow. It’s a lovely bow but wrong colour with that dress. I feel your pain. There’s nothing worse than slaving over a hot sewing machine on a project that is naff. Good luck😜
Morning Jay, I love it - I really really love it. TBH I've been a bit underwhelmed by this gown (just not my cup of tea) but I really like your rendition, even the strange gathered neck looks good in that fabric, however, I'd maybe try a different neck-tie, either the self fabric or maybe black or you could go really whacky and try a pop of colour, I definitely think the biggest issue is with the tie. The volume (or lack of) isn't noticeable as it's such a roomy dress. I know I haven't stuck to the 3 options offered but they are my genuine thoughts on the matter. Thank you Jay for sharing with us. OK, Im going to add an option D, cos ... well why not! LOL. The lace cuffs are lovely and could work well with the tie, but I think the tie is a little too long, making the entire dress look out of proportion. Maybe try cutting the ties so they hang just on the waistline. Or use the same fabric if you have any left to make a tie and trim that with the lace to co-ordinate. Cut off the bottom tier and add a belt. When you move up the pockets, I think this dress will work beautifully. Just MHO, hope it helps you. Love the fabric BTW :)
I think the print is too busy. Remove the white bow altogether. Or a smaller neck decoration in black. Midi length definitely! I would also shorten the bodice for you or replace the bodice altogether with solid black sleeves and bodice to tone down the busy and maybe keep the length but bring it up a few inches or go midi.
Hi! I’ve been wanting to make this pattern, but I am worried it will be overwhelming on me. When you were sitting down, the top portion looks very nice. I know this wasn’t one of your options, but if there’s anyway you could make this into a tunic, which I think is an option on the pattern, I think it would be fabulous. You can then use the remaining fabric to make something else. The only other change I would make, is to change the tie to a thinner black silkier tie, or use the same fabric for the tie. I would definitely try to make it work, because I do think the upper portion looks nice on you. Also, if you wanted to keep it longer how does it look belted? Can’t wait to see what you decide to do with it! Best of luck, I’ve also been experiencing some sewing fails, which can be disheartening, but please carry-on!
Redeem it, then decide if it works. It’s so close. Are the pockets making it sit a little wonky? Love the fabric. I also agree with the others that the white bow is a bit distracting
I know it’s not for everyone and not always ideal but I’ve started going out to shops and trying different styles on before I make them to see whether they actually suit me. It’s so demoralising when you make something and it doesn’t suit you. I actually think it would look better without a white tie. I think I would try a black tie instead if you don’t have anymore of that fabric. A lot of people have also said that they have worn it with a belt and felt better in it. I agree with other comments about the bow - change to black ribbon. Also the devil's in the details with this dress! Your details are somewhat lost in print. But... if you trim each seam with the same black ribbon you use in the tie that will show off your tiers- and ... you're so tiny! Change the sleeves to 3/4 length - leave the hem as is. I also saw some examples on Instagram- the models left the tie open at the neck - I think This would look nice on you.
This reminds me so much of the Erdem dress that Kate Middleton wore at The Chelsea Flower Show (check it out). With a bit of tweaking, with that in mind, you could rock with dress (with the hair down of course).

I see! The bodice is a bit of a nightmare actually, it's really gapey at the front 🤨 I only sell on Instagram ATM, it keeps costs down and that way I can sell fabric cheaply 👍🏻💙
I love the Wilder gown, but know that I would look like my nan in her nightie! I'd say B, but agree with the others who have commented on the colour of the tie. It needs to be black, I think.
I think the faults are not visible with the you have for this dress. The pockets are ok where they are. I always attach my side in seam pockets to the waist seam, which makes stronger pockets and the pockets stable and do not flap around.
Being a very out-of-touch "follower of fashion" ( Kinks tribute ) I had to look up #wildergown and I have say ... I only saw two out of about forty that I really liked . One red on the beach.... One White and see-thru. Even then they seemed to me to be wearing nice nighties. Now I'm not against wearing nighties ..... I got married in one in the 70's !! 😏 Floaty fabric seems to quite work ... Plain colour shows the construction. It just seems to swamp you and even with alteration the style is probably just not you (😕) I think (😩) As you are asking , I would alter it as plan b. I can see you in a funky shorter style ......layers swinging .....big black bow ...black cuffs .....red tights . Thanks for asking us 💚
Option C to make it midi length. The white tie isn’t working for me. You always look fab in color, maybe it’s just the dark fabric too (although I do love the fabric). Or Option D, put it away for a few weeks and be inspired when you bring it out again 😻
Do don't give up the dream. From here.. I like it on you...But as we know - how it feels is what matters I would, as much as possible, return to the suggested fabric widths...I think 'b'?
Ok Well it’s option c from me but think about the following A. The bow is just wrong, easy to change. Use self fabric or perhaps black. If you haven’t stitched in then you can change it up as the mood takes you B. It looks much better than you think C. Maybe the length is one you don’t like. Make it midi that’s more you and patterns are there to adapt after all. D . I made this but I made the top. I’ve made two and wear them a lot although I didn’t actually think they were my style. E. Rachel from the fold line made one and I believe she added narrow ties to the waist. It completely changed the dress and that may be worth considering if you feel there is too much volume. If I find the pic I’ll drop you a link.

Not all styles suit everyone, I would look horrendous in this even though I think it’s a beautiful style. I vote for chopping it into a mini because I think the bodice looks cute 😊
My vote would be option B, in fact I would be surprised if this style suited anyone. I think we all look at a pattern, and think this would be perfect, only to discover that perhaps this style is not for me!! The fabric is really nice so it would be a shame not to use it. Best of luck.

I like the way the top half is looking on you, so I'd recommend chopping it into a blouse or mini length dress.

Love the fabric on you and the neckline...so tray to make the ajustments so its more your fit/style/porportsenwise. 😍
Agree with several posters that the print hides all the details and it then swamps you. Wonder if a short knee length or above knee would salvage the dress. We have all been there when a pattern doesn't turn out the way we imagine. Alas, I am generally not a salvager so would pass it on to charity. You do a great job sewing despite this one!!
C. I think you can save it. I would start by shortening the bodice and see if that's enough to fix the pocket issue. But I agree that midi length is probably better for you and would look great with boots.

I made a black rayon wilder gown. I'm 5'9, and its long on me! I lengthened the bodice, as I wanted to wear a belt so I wasn't so overwhelmed by the amount of fabric. And I didn't want to feel frumpy. But the fabric is a wee bit sheer so I need to wear something underneath! Not ideal in a tropical climate! As it's totally black, I've had a few comments about 'going for a Victorian nun' kinda vibe. I do like it, but have to wear it open at the neck so there's a break from the black. I do wear it with sneakers, and I do like it 😜 it's just a big statement dress to wear to work!

My Wilder Gown turned out looking horrendous on me too! I could not stop it looking like a sad girl's sleeping gown.

I think 5 inches shorter sounds good! (But it is very voluminous and reminds me of all my “nightgowns”. ) But whatever you do I’m sure you’ll do a fabulous job!

I vote for trying to redeem it because then you’ll know if that style and possible future dream dresses could work. And then the other two options are still available if it doesn’t work.

Hi Jay! I say start with C and if needed keep going backwards to A. I tend to chose the most labor intensive route .... I like to see all the options plus I always learn something along the way. It does seem like I put the MOST work into trying to salvage a mediocre piece. Nowadays I just set it aside for awhile before I make a move to see how I feel about the whole project. I want to love the waffty dresses, too! They are so different, I think we are just not adapted. If it were me, I would: replace the white tie with a dark one, shorten the bodice, start waffting. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for sharing your less successful makes. I think it depends how much you loved the pattern. You'll know in your gut if it's worth the effort to make it work. I'd change the tie to darker I think then option C. If you're heart s not in it just donate though!!

C and change the white bow to black . I quite fancy making this, but I'd wear it undone as I have ample bazooms .
(Also just had another look and the trim on the cuffs... maybe that is contributing to making it look more "nightgown" like... I'd personally take it off and do a plain hem...) xxxx
I definitely think you can make this work for you Jay so I vote option c... In my humble opinion the following would help...
Firstly the colour of the tie... I think it would be better in a dark colour and a thinner/less ornate tape... I also think it might work better left open or tied more loosely because like me you are gifted in the buzooms dept and higher necks aren't always flattering. A bit of uncovered chest balances things a bit...I know the high neck is a feature of the wilder but what's the point of sewing if we cant adapt to suit...
2. Definitely shorten the bodice and the top panel of the skirt.
3. It may work better shorter...
Option 4... recycle the material into one of your lovely puff-sleeved blouses. They really suit you!

I confess I didn’t read everyone’s replies. What if you switch the bow from around your neck to around the empire waist? That will cinch it in and make it seem more fitted. Pockets, shmockets, replace them only if you want to. Midi length would look really cute with some lace up granny boots. I’m still chuckling over “gesturing with a banana.”😂
I endorse option B. I think it has great potential for you and I love the fabric. Agree that the tie and cuff finishes don't look right, at all, and that a shorter style will work better.
I think you should take off the bottom tier and make your adjustments to the tier with your pockets and see how you like it. Also maybe shorten the ties. 😊
I agree with others that it swamps you. I’d go for option B, shorten it and change to a black tie rather than white. I think this style even on the tall and willowy can look like a nightie! Look forward to seeing what happens 😀

Can't believe you are showing the Wilder Gown. Just saw it before your video and thought of you! Love the fabric, love the dress detail at the neck and sleeve! You are swimming in dress! Dress seems too long and too wide from armpit down. Love bow idea but proportionally it is too long for your frame. White is good for it or black as some have suggested. Jay-ify that dress, girl!! :)
HI! Right away I see that it should be sized down one or two sizes.
Next, I would shorten it a lot!!
Lastly the ribbon you used I think it is overwhelming you, and adding to that "granny" look. I would suggest a narrower ribbon-and I think I would use self fabric for that tie-or change it to a black-or black and white muted print. Then, I think you may like it much better.
The whole thing, is simply too much for your body!! Take it in or re-cut it. Let us know and see what happens!! :+)
I have heard that others went down one to two sizes, and liked the fit much better. HTH!! :+)
Also remove the white trim off sleeves-and wear it tied more loosely at the neck-I've even seen it completely untied, with just the ties hanging down. That might help you a bit.

Hi, It's me, weeks late as usual. I think that option 1 is the best. I like the fuller, floaty dresses but they do not suit me, like me I think you are small framed and easily swamped. Although my post menapause middle is hardly small! I am only 5th 2in and in summer made the Alix dress, adding tiers to the top version. I can just about get away with it because it has a fitted waist. Thanks for doing these videos.

The dress looks lovely fabric is good, and the ruffle around the neck really suits you Jay! I’m not an expert but I think the problem comes, as you suggest with the proportions being off, so adjusting the tiers and shortening to a midi length add some Docs and your are on to a winner!
But my first thought at the start of the video was that the white tie just emphasises all the points you feel are not working for you. If it were in the same fabric or black I think it would change your whole perspective.
But love the shoulders and neckline. Definitely on trend!

Your so right about the proportion problem. I made a Wilder blouse and was so disappointed. The raglan sleeve creates a droopy look in the bodice, with the fabric hanging low under the arm. I think even if you shorten the dress, the bodice still has a proportion problem. I’m going to try again with Butterick 6487, which has a set in sleeve. If I like it better, I’ll add a skirt and make it a dress.

I love the fabric and the dress! But I think it drowns your frame and my eyes are just drawn to the white tie and cuffs. I would just remove the bottom tier and use the fabric to replace the tie (I’d make it a little shorter too) and cuffs. I think the style does suit you though x
Glad to see you disscuss your struggles with this pattern thank you!. Everyone on SM seems to love it but I just thought it looked like a big nightie. I don't know how tall you are but you seem to have a petite frame and I think that in its current state the dress totally swamps you and looks a bit frumpy (sorry) - I made the Charlie Kaftan having seen so many lovely versions on IG but it looked like a frumpy nightie on me so that's what it became 🙄 I agree with a few other: mid length, undo the neck bow and have it loose and open, maybe wear it with a belt or tie to show that you have some shape under it, also it's bo-ho type dress so styling your hair loose and down rather than in a top-knot could match the aesthetic more faithfully. I think if a person is tall and broad shouldered this dress would hang well and wouldn't be swamping, narrow shouldered ladies have to be careful about where the distribution of balance is in a garment. I'm certain you will be able to salvage this dress and make it look fabulous on you 💕

I would have a go at C, I think the neckline looks really pretty on you, BUT I really don't like the white bow I'm afraid. I think if you turn it into a more baby doll type style it would be more you. As for the tie, I'd try black, may be a bit of black velvet ribbon if you have any knocking around? Thanks though for sharing. Like everyone else who commented it's so interesting to see the highs AND the lows.
I would go for c.I think the main issue is the white tie,it just stands out in the wrong way.It should be a black tie and not in a lace to make it look more modern and not so long that it overtakes the dress..I also think it would look good with a wide leather belt to emphasise your waist.If you want to wear it loose I think it definitely needs to be midi length and wear it with black boots.Also,maybe the fabric does not have enough stability.The main thing is you have to feel right in your dress.It doesn't matter what anyone thinks as long as you feel right.

May I suggest you cut it to ankle length, take out some fulness, replace the white tie with a 1/2" black velvet ribbon. Put on black suede ankle boots and good to go.
I’ve made the top twice in linen and love it. I do not wear the neck gathered tight around my neck but open and tied. It looks chic and stylish and definitely not prairie-style, though.The Stitch Sisters demonstrated a great way to wear the full length dress by using a wide belt around the waist and leaving the neck untied and open like a peasant blouse. It’s a tough dress to wear probably for most people.Your tie and cuffs would be better in the same fabric so as to not draw attention to them...the entire look should be the focus. Hope you can salvage it and enjoy your efforts. Thank you for the honest review/experience.

Definitely option B. What about short sleeves. Not sure about the bow. It’s a lovely bow but wrong colour with that dress. I feel your pain. There’s nothing worse than slaving over a hot sewing machine on a project that is naff. Good luck😜

Morning Jay, I love it - I really really love it. TBH I've been a bit underwhelmed by this gown (just not my cup of tea) but I really like your rendition, even the strange gathered neck looks good in that fabric, however, I'd maybe try a different neck-tie, either the self fabric or maybe black or you could go really whacky and try a pop of colour, I definitely think the biggest issue is with the tie. The volume (or lack of) isn't noticeable as it's such a roomy dress. I know I haven't stuck to the 3 options offered but they are my genuine thoughts on the matter. Thank you Jay for sharing with us. OK, Im going to add an option D, cos ... well why not! LOL. The lace cuffs are lovely and could work well with the tie, but I think the tie is a little too long, making the entire dress look out of proportion. Maybe try cutting the ties so they hang just on the waistline. Or use the same fabric if you have any left to make a tie and trim that with the lace to co-ordinate. Cut off the bottom tier and add a belt. When you move up the pockets, I think this dress will work beautifully. Just MHO, hope it helps you. Love the fabric BTW :)
The top fits you nicely, I'd like to see you have a go at in a new fabric, apart from that option B.

I think the print is too busy. Remove the white bow altogether. Or a smaller neck decoration in black. Midi length definitely! I would also shorten the bodice for you or replace the bodice altogether with solid black sleeves and bodice to tone down the busy and maybe keep the length but bring it up a few inches or go midi.
Hi! I’ve been wanting to make this pattern, but I am worried it will be overwhelming on me. When you were sitting down, the top portion looks very nice. I know this wasn’t one of your options, but if there’s anyway you could make this into a tunic, which I think is an option on the pattern, I think it would be fabulous. You can then use the remaining fabric to make something else. The only other change I would make, is to change the tie to a thinner black silkier tie, or use the same fabric for the tie. I would definitely try to make it work, because I do think the upper portion looks nice on you. Also, if you wanted to keep it longer how does it look belted? Can’t wait to see what you decide to do with it! Best of luck, I’ve also been experiencing some sewing fails, which can be disheartening, but please carry-on!

I know it’s not for everyone and not always ideal but I’ve started going out to shops and trying different styles on before I make them to see whether they actually suit me. It’s so demoralising when you make something and it doesn’t suit you. I actually think it would look better without a white tie. I think I would try a black tie instead if you don’t have anymore of that fabric. A lot of people have also said that they have worn it with a belt and felt better in it. I’d take off some bodice length, reduce length of panels, reduce width all round and change neck tie to black 🤞🏻

I agree with other comments about the bow - change to black ribbon. Also the devil's in the details with this dress! Your details are somewhat lost in print. But... if you trim each seam with the same black ribbon you use in the tie that will show off your tiers- and ... you're so tiny! Change the sleeves to 3/4 length - leave the hem as is. I also saw some examples on Instagram- the models left the tie open at the neck - I think This would look nice on you.

This reminds me so much of the Erdem dress that Kate Middleton wore at The Chelsea Flower Show (check it out). With a bit of tweaking, with that in mind, you could rock with dress (with the hair down of course).

I see! The bodice is a bit of a nightmare actually, it's really gapey at the front 🤨 I only sell on Instagram ATM, it keeps costs down and that way I can sell fabric cheaply 👍🏻💙

I love the Wilder gown, but know that I would look like my nan in her nightie! I'd say B, but agree with the others who have commented on the colour of the tie. It needs to be black, I think.

I think the faults are not visible with the you have for this dress. The pockets are ok where they are. I always attach my side in seam pockets to the waist seam, which makes stronger pockets and the pockets stable and do not flap around.
Being a very out-of-touch "follower of fashion" ( Kinks tribute ) I had to look up #wildergown and I have say ... I only saw two out of about forty that I really liked . One red on the beach.... One White and see-thru. Even then they seemed to me to be wearing nice nighties. Now I'm not against wearing nighties ..... I got married in one in the 70's !! 😏
Floaty fabric seems to quite work ... Plain colour shows the construction.
It just seems to swamp you and even with alteration the style is probably just not you (😕) I think (😩)
As you are asking , I would alter it as plan b. I can see you in a funky shorter style ......layers swinging .....big black bow ...black cuffs .....red tights .

Option C to make it midi length. The white tie isn’t working for me. You always look fab in color, maybe it’s just the dark fabric too (although I do love the fabric). Or Option D, put it away for a few weeks and be inspired when you bring it out again 😻
Do don't give up the dream. From here.. I like it on you...But as we know - how it feels is what matters I would, as much as possible, return to the suggested fabric widths...I think 'b'?

Well it’s option c from me but think about the following
A. The bow is just wrong, easy to change. Use self fabric or perhaps black. If you haven’t stitched in then you can change it up as the mood takes you
B. It looks much better than you think
C. Maybe the length is one you don’t like. Make it midi that’s more you and patterns are there to adapt after all.
D . I made this but I made the top. I’ve made two and wear them a lot although I didn’t actually think they were my style.
E. Rachel from the fold line made one and I believe she added narrow ties to the waist. It completely changed the dress and that may be worth considering if you feel there is too much volume. If I find the pic I’ll drop you a link.

Not all styles suit everyone, I would look horrendous in this even though I think it’s a beautiful style. I vote for chopping it into a mini because I think the bodice looks cute 😊
My vote would be option B, in fact I would be surprised if this style suited anyone. I think we all look at a pattern, and think this would be perfect, only to discover that perhaps this style is not for me!! The fabric is really nice so it would be a shame not to use it. Best of luck.
