  • Would you like to try something new in containers? We are familiar with using annuals, but this video gives you many creative ideas for using native perennials and shrubs instead. They look gorgeous and by selecting plants that overwinter, you will be ready when spring comes and won't have to replant them next year! Learn about designs for plenty of color without using annuals while making your containers more eco-friendly by using native plants! If your plants are not in full sun this video also includes plants for part-shade.

I wanted to do this but I was afraid. Please follow up this video in the fall to show how you will prepare the pots for winter. For example, do you need to take precautions so the soil freezing and thawing won't crack the pots? Thank you. Love your channel!

Hi Sherry, yes, I plan to follow up through the fall and next spring as they overwinter. Thanks for taking the time to share your concerns!

Love this idea! I plant annuals in pots all over my deck and patio every spring, sometimes updating later in the summer as they start to look ratty. Then of course they all need to get pulled and the cycle starts all over the next spring. It can be time consuming, expensive and wasteful. But seeing these planters filled with perennials and shrubs made me re-think my strategy. Filling larger pots with smooth hydrangeas is a wonderful idea!!! I didn't see a follow up video on how these overwintered but I'm still giving this a try in Spring 2022. Thanks!

I use small pieces of wood in bottom of pots, hugelculture idea, to take up space.

Wait! Is everything you showed a native in your area? With all those colorations and habits that are not found in the species?
