I wasn't born yet during Vietnam era, but I did serve during Iraq/Afghanistan. After getting out and talking to older veterans in between VA appointments at hospitals or other spots, I have the greatest empathy as a fellow veteran, for what they went through. War can sometimes get glorified in entertainment, but it's a dark, messy affair and the effects last decades, sometimes a lifetime. Some of those guys never made it home, not physically, but mentally.
Love the concept of the story, our shadows follow us in light, but what if darkness we survived manifested and followed us?

Had a really interesting talk with a Vietnam vet who was sitting in a wheelchair outside of the dollar store one day. He had a POW MIA flag on his chair and I asked him what it meant. He told me and he talked to me about some of his friends that went MIA during Vietnam. He was a really nice guy and I thanked him for his service and shook his hand before I left.

Wow! 😮 I didn't see that ending coming! Hate to say something like 'Great story!' becuz of the realness of the subject-matter. Instead I'll just say I'm in awe of the writer's ability to convey the situation with such grace! It is an amazing piece of horror fiction! I was on the verge of tears thru most of the story. I have ppl in my life that suffer similarly. I, also, have PTSD, but for totally different reasons that I'm not gonna go into! But I do know the shadows that walk thru my dreams that make me wake up screaming, though it has gotten to be less frequent as time marches on. I'm tryna learn to Fear Not the Shadows!Thank you so much for taking the time to prepare & share this story with us!😘 As always, Mr. D much love & respect from SW Louisiana ❤!

Every time I see a Vietnam Vet that’s exactly what I say! “Welcome home Sir!! Thank you for your service!” Shake hands if allowed! I do that because I had a chat with a very nice man at a hotel I worked at one night. He told me that those were the best words you can say to them because they didn’t receive such when returning home!! People against the war…I get that…but the soldiers don’t start the war they are just doing what they are ordered to do! Most of those men thought they were there to help liberate the South Vietnamese so it was quite confusing and then as they look forward to coming back home to the land they love they get things thrown at them. Cursed at. Beaten and who knows what else!

Another great story, thank you. I had a substitute teacher back in the 90s that was a Vietnam Vet and told a very similar story to the coke part. I'm not sure why he was telling it to a group of 5th graders but I've thought about it so often over the years.

The bunkbed story always scares me. Because this is literally the exact reason I won’t sleep on the top bunk of any bunk bed anymore. I had a very similar (not being pulled into the wall) issue that kept happening. Moving to the bottom bunk doesn’t actually help it just moved the issue up to the top bunk. But at least I had a clean shot to the door. I rearranged the room accordingly.
