Rachel O'leary. I have a vegetables garden, and multiple flower beds. My iris, violets, oxalis, spiderwort and roses are blooming along with verbanum, and my daffodils are already done. I love to garden and play in the dirt. I worked on a farm for one summer and ran a greenhouse. I cant wait to get more coleus. I used to have a realky pretty yard, but ive moved so much in the past few years so ive started from scratch every year. But now my plants are finally naturlizing.
Last year my grandkids planted some flowers in front of the house. I am still waiting for spring to come, we are getting a couple of inches of snow this weekend.
I'm hoping to get a few Hydrangeas in my front beds - we get almost no sun there - just filtered through some trees. but I planted Iris' a few years ago and that bed is coming up finally!! I hope to put an refurbed tank on the deck and start my own tub this year too - inspired by you!! =D
I don't have a yard but I keep succulents & cactus 🌵 which also live in a sand-mixed substrate ;) on my 2 large windowsills. I hope to keep an outside garden someday and have a goldfish pond with fancies. It's coming together! Thankful we'll have warm weather for a few days!! ✊ (I'm in Central NJ)
Rachael, I appreciate the videos. I live in Central Florida (Tampa) where it is hot and humid most of the time. I used your videos to get my CP in the ground really deeply. I have some CPs that require cool roots which you can imagine in Central Florida is a problem. I was able to use an old aquarium water chiller to remedy the problem. I used a series of PVC pipes that run under and on the side of my CP roots. It is a closed system like an aquarium, but effective for growing CPs in the warm temperatures of Florida. Since we really don't get a winter, this method along with a shorter photo period allows my plants to go dormant, while at the same time getting effective sunlight. Keep posting, we all appreciate it!!
Looks great. As it is at the beginning, it's not too overcrowded yet at all. But in fact, with carnivorous plants, I think a tight look with many plants and little bare soil looks better, so as it grows and multiplies, and even drops seeds to make new plants, what you have there will begin to look seriously amazing!
i agree. I am actually considering getting more to add. I hope to do an update maybe next week talking about a few of the unexpected issues I have had, as well as some successes. Thanks for the input! This is my first bog garden and I am really loving it so far.
Hi Rachel, Don't know if it was mentioned before as I didn't read all the comments, but, what I do for doing a mix for big planters is to get out the wheelbarrow and flat bottomed shovel. Add the soil and sand to the wheelbarrow and mix it all up good in there and then just shovel it into the planters. Nice work!! And best of luck with the knee surgery.
Rachel for a water level indicator for your standpipe, just glue a thin bamboo stake to a small fishing bobber and stick it in your standpipe. Wala. Instant water level indicator from a distance.
Hello from Australia, loving your channel. I am looking forward to seeing how your bog garden progresses. I kept some carnivorous plants a number of years ago. and watching you setting up your bog garden is making me want to try keeping them again. I am also looking forward to see how your fish do once you get them out side. I have also kept and bred fish for over 10 years, tho i haven't had any for the last 4 bu am hoping to get some tanks back up and running soon. Look forward to seeing more interesting and inspirational videos.
Such exciting projects Rachel! The garden is going to be so beautiful i bet! I love how much u work with plants in combination with your fish. Good luck with everything! 🌞🌱
I'm just getting seriously into gardening (since December) and I'm amazed at how fascinating plants are. They strive to survive and adapt easily. I'm sure everything will turn out great. ;) Can't wait to see.
I would also like to add that I really love all of your videos. I have always been interested in aquariums, and now you also have me interested in all of the different plants that you have. Since I am handicapped, and do not have the use of my arms, or legs, I guess I live vicariously through all of your videos. Keep up the great work!
man, if you have a patio/deck that you spend time on, a small patio tub would probably be really enriching, and at a good level for you to enjoy easily (auditory and visual)
As a matter of fact I do have an awesome deck that I spend many hours on during the summertime. The only problem would be getting someone to do all of the maintenance. Like I said, I get a lot of satisfaction watching the things that you are doing. I'm learning a lot along the way as well.
the nice part with most of them, is the only maintenance it really needs is top offs if they get low from summer heat. Where are you located? Perhaps I know the local club and could help set you up wiht someone to get things started. I absolutely adore the sounds and visuals of these little water gardens.
That's a very kind offer, but luckily for me there is a creek running right along side of my deck and there are ducks, and frogs, and all sorts of wildlife. So that's a free sound and visual extravaganza! I live up in Northern Ontario, so Summer is not a very long season.
I LOVE your bog garden! I bet you have a list a mile long of different species of carnivorous plants you'd like to collect! I'm like that with my plants. It's always so fun to search for them and network with the local nurseries to get my hands on a particular type!
I am SOOO excited to watch this progress!! You rock SOOO much for sharing this with us!! =D I have been watching and re'watching your summer tubin' series as well - I've got the itch!!
Very cool Don’t “mess “with the creative process. I also create a disaster while “cleaning”. Lol. I always have to take everything apart to put it all together. ( and I have the peace of mind knowing what is where and that it’s all clean depending on my project) Follow your process. Sometimes the best ideas are at the bottom 😊
Yay! No snow! Let`s keep it that way. The VenusFlyTraps usually don`t like it as wet as Sarracenia. That said, I have seen people keeping them in a similar set up and them doing great, as long as they get some good full sun and aeration, they should do aweseome, even turn quite red!
i have had really good luck keeping them the same as the sarracenia, and the various VFT farms I have visited had them set up in similar conditions, so I am hopeful! We will learn together!
Just love this I’m new to carnivores plants and just planted my first bog this year. I have red dragon VFT, Sarracenia purpurea, and a typical VFT. I also used this type of watering system.
Rachael you're soooo motivating I can see how passionate you are with plants and it's infectious it makes me want to get outside and start a bog too but I live in northern Canada and have to wait for the last foot of snow to go :(
This is some next level stuff Rachel, love it! I have an active bog filter on my koi pond, nowhere near this level, just some UK bee friendly natives. Always ends up taking the attention away from the koi!
Awesome project. I am planning on building one next year, your videos were exactly what I was looking for. I had some good hanging baskets in the keys, now that I'm in NJ I plan on a giant in ground bog.
also- check out Mid Atlantic Carnivorous Plant Society- they have meetings that move around, but are in NJ at least once a year (including potting workshops, propogation workshops, winterizing workshops, etc). They have a facebook page and a forum
You could add some Lady Slipper Orchids to your bog garden. I think you can order all native orchids online from nurseries. not sure if trillium would survive in the bog garden but certainly planted around the base of it for sure if you are so inclined to want them. You could even add some cranberry bushes in the bog and blueberry bushes around it. Yummy berries in a few years.
I'm waiting for the weather to settle down... 70 today but supposed to snow again this weekend. Then I have some dwarf Japanese maples to plant, and an order of native prairie plants coming in a few weeks. I also grow miniature roses, though some of them may not have survived the winter. Eventually I have some ponds and wetlands planned, but that's a few years out. This year I'm putting in a fence, and that's the biggest project.
It look great; I can't wait to see it after the plants start taking off. A thought on a mixing tool - ask Chris to make a big potato masher for you. The kind that has a wire zig-zagging across would help push the moss down into the water, while being able to stir the mix when it's pulled out. This and the tubs are great series. Thanks!
I have friends that have a bunch of Bog Orchids. I'll check and see if they want to part with any. I raise compact to mini orchids in a wardian case under lights. Love your videos!!!
I have permanently watched a listing for scentbottle orchid seeds on eBay, they're a bog orchid species and smell spectacular... So good. Absolutely my favorite orchid outside of the genus Lepanthes. I haven't bought them because I don't have a good place for them to live right now, and also my thumb isn't very green, but you might try it out.
Hi Rachel, I sent you an email regarding the bog orchids. I hope you get it, if not please let me know as I may not have sent it correctly. I'm still trying to figure out how all this phone stuff works. Lolol😄 looking forward to your live feed today. Rob

Something bad just happened in Middlesbrough, England. A Maidenhead aquatics has just burned down. I got a lot of my fish there. It upsets me and other fish keepers in the area. carnivorousplantnursery.com is great. I have met the owner and visited the facility. Their quality is top notch. I have had good success with several vendors. Keep in mind, CP's are often shipped without their pitchers (i.e. cut back or early growing season) so they don't get damaged. They come back quickly. There are a few good vendors on Etsy as well.
no, fertilizer generally is not needed for these plants, as they get all of their nutrition from eating bugs. In fac,t if you use enriched soils, it will often burn or kill the plants entirely.
I know this is over a year old, and I am not sure if you get updates on your messages. I would have a very difficult time in your yard due to the fact you’d have to drag me kicking and screaming out of it. Just sayin
I am so excited to see this grow in! What sort of gardens do you guys put in?

I enjoyed listening to the birds as much as I enjoyed the video itself! 😁
i didn't even notice them!
Rachel O'leary 🤣 I'm an avid bird watcher, so I think my ears are tuned to lock onto birdsong. 😊
Rachel....you and Joey are killing me !! Lol....you both post a few minutes apart then I have to decide who to watch first 😘😂...you both rock!
hahaha, we don't coordinate obviously :)

Hahaha I loved the ending comment "or make a bigger inground bog garden" YES!!! any excuse for a new bog garden
What a great way to spend the day pottering about outside listening to the birds singing. Lovely project look forward to seeing phase 2
This is going to look great when spring comes in full blast. Everything would fill in..
I Love your "sinks"!! What a perfect use for them. You're giving me soooo many ideas!!

Heg rachel ! your green house is amazing ! I love all your tub set ups 😍 So jealous !
Thanks!
I love your bog garden, what a cool idea!
thanks Jordan!
Super interesting, and I'm looking forward to following your plant and fish progress. That's a lot of work for someone with a "funny" knee!

Good stuff good job, slow down ......don't rush stay in the moment.Your such an energizer bunny!
and NOW I'm considering a little bog garden on my front porch this year!

Thanks again...You always inspire me...
You beat me to I was thinking exactly what you said when you were pouring that peat in like a cow in the pasture...lol..
80 degrees.... yeah... 40 in the morning and 40 in the evening - LOL.
Looking good - can't wait for it to warm up so we can see growth.
Thanks for all the info on carnivorous plants! Bought my first nepenthes hoping it’ll do well in my apartment.
Rachael you're soooo motivating I can see how passionate you are with plants and it's infectious it makes me want to get outside and start a bog too but I live in northern Canada and have to wait for the last foot of snow to go :(

Awesome project. I am planning on building one next year, your videos were exactly what I was looking for. I had some good hanging baskets in the keys, now that I'm in NJ I plan on a giant in ground bog.
you are in the perfect area for a good bog! There are quitee a few natural bogs in the greater NJ/PA area where you can visit for inspiration.
also- check out Mid Atlantic Carnivorous Plant Society- they have meetings that move around, but are in NJ at least once a year (including potting workshops, propogation workshops, winterizing workshops, etc). They have a facebook page and a forum

my bonsai HATE this spring!

6:55 Your pun game is on point today.
ha! accidental puns are the best
Wonder if a small pole on a bobber that gets put in the stand pipe would help with determining the water level? Fun stuff!
That's a good idea!
This is pretty neat! May try this someday
I lived in Indonesia as a kid and they had a huge and colorful pitcher plant.
This project is super cool
thanks! I am pretty excited about it!
Looking really good
I have friends that have a bunch of Bog Orchids. I'll check and see if they want to part with any. I raise compact to mini orchids in a wardian case under lights. Love your videos!!!
that would be epic! I was digging around online and really didn't find much
Rachel O'leary I'll do my best for you. Yes they are hard to locate and very few people that raise orchids even know much about them. 😭 😃

When I worked at a garden center we mixed our own soil mixes,do you have access to an old cement mixer? It would mix all that in now time...
Very cool, I hope to do something like this next summer after we buy a house. Any tips on wintering over carnivorous plants?
Looks pretty awesome! Almost had me motivated to hit the garden centre myself!! But still too cold here.
Looks great, thank you for another great video! :-)
I love it!! 💜
Looking good! I hope your weather holds out for you, here in Ontario Canada we are in for a ice storm this weekend.
supposed to be HOT here this weekend! so far, the forecast looks great! FINALLY. Hopefully that will be the case for you soon, as well
Another great video Rachel! I hope you dont mind me asking, are you still hoping to start a betta serority tank? I'm trying to research before I set one up but There's so many mixed opinions on them everywhere I look, so was wondering what you thought? Your amazing 😘
Hey Rachel, repotme.com sells excellent sphagnum moss that comes back to life as soon as it gets some extra moisture and light. Just a thought for top cover.
Cheers,
Chris
Thanks Chris! If what i ordered isn't enough,I will check it out!
sexy!
Thanks Joey! I am excited to get this entire project done and watch it grow in!
very sexy
If you want some orchids contact your local botanical gardens and they should have information for you about upcoming orchid shows. I saw some bog orchids at this years orchid show in St Louis
I think ill try something like this here in NC, but ill do a control grow in a terrarium. The warm is coming your way. Nc is starting to finally heat up. I cant wait for summer. Gotta make a mess before you make it nice!
Rachel, will you have to re-pot the bog garden before Winter or is there a way to protect the plants and leave them out all year?
It's interesting to learn how you are adapting to the greenhouse thus far. Specifically what to open and close to regulate your air temperature. I like how the snails became test subjects before fish are moved out. #thelifeofasnail
They should overwinter outside just fine- I will use my pine litter and winter cloth to cover them :) The snails are very happy out there! I had seeded with daphnia before the snails- so i knew the water was safe, I just wanted to see their activity level to guage when to move the fish out :)
I'm also planning to add a small garden house with a bog garden next to it, so I've been loving your videos. One question: I remember seeing/hearing somewhere that bog plants have a problem with chlorinated water and I live on a city water system. I don't know if this is true about the chlorine issue. Have you come across this information anywhere?
I didn't really look into it. Could always set up a drum to pretreat it
pearlite would be good for holding the moisture in maybe mix some of that in as well, but looking good.....dougie from the uk
yea, it is an option, but not generally required. I could have, but I didn't find any locally that didn't have added fertilizers so just left it out.
If the peat bags are waterproof, why not put a hose sized hole in the top and soak it in the bag? The only space in the bag is the air in between the bits of peat. I would think that it would help to 'pressurize' the peat to soak faster. Just top off the water every day until it stops absorbing water. Cut the bag open from there and Bob's your Uncle and Fanny's your aunt.
For tub breeding:
Do you leave the leafs and crud that collects in the tub and let it settle and act as leaf litter or do you scoop it out?
Something bad just happened in Middlesbrough, England. A Maidenhead aquatics has just burned down. I got a lot of my fish there. It upsets me and other fish keepers in the area. Maidenhead aquatics are the most widespread and most popular fish retailers in the UK. I also think it’ll be a good video idea.
Oh no! I need to reach out to the owner
Rachel O’Leary another name for it is strikes garden centre or Maidenhead Aquatics Stoksley
I used to be a big garden pots gardener(flowers), but physical limitations have made it too hard anymore. I would love to have a raised up bench garden, but that would require help.
i am very lucky that my husband (and kids) are so willing to help me wiht heavy lifting
Would using coconut coir mixed with peat or instead of it be as good for the bog?
I love your hair 😍😍
Could you please tell me the model and brand of your greenhouse. It looks awesome
I hope to do a comprehensive overview once I get through all 4 seasons :)
Ahhh ha ha ha. Yes that sounds like you have a cow in the yard.
If you can source enough warm / hot water the peat will saturate very quickly
I sure hope your underground irrigation system doesn't get all clogged up.
it shouldn't but even if it does, it really isn't the end of the world. I will be able to tell pretty easily if its not draining out of the standpipe, which is the point of that part.
if it does a c02 blast will clear it :)
Do you start your plants from seed or buy seedlings? Do you have a favored company that you find trustworthy or shop local?
I have done both. I like carnivorous plant nursery in md.
Giiirrll!! Your legs are looking good. Youve lost weight?!
How do you make sure that your sand and soil don't become cement? In the succulent hobby most people use chicken grit or pumice. Could we use that?
I used sand- similar concept :)
I hope this hasn't already been answered but what characteristics do you look for in your sand?
Square foot, chop and flip and a plant garden .
Will you move these next winter?
You should put goldfish in the top container
its too shallow
Hey I was interested in getting a pitcher plant what species do you think will do well in south Texas? preferable something US native
i would google what grows in that area (or the same zone). Check out the book Savage Garden- its a phenomenal resource
The question is what king of orchid was that?
Early question when the freeze does come back what would you have to do
These are all cold tolerant plants but I will insulate them with pine litter and winter cloth
Do you recommend for one to rinse the lava rock before use?
Its not a bad idea but I don't think I did
Do you know a good reputable online store I can get carnivorous plants from?? Like pitchers and fly traps...
carnivorousplantnursery.com is great.
Rachel O'leary thanks so much hun❤
I found the carnivorous plants
Cement mixer would make it easier if you know someone with one
it makes it fly into the air- its light as dust
Peat and sand are totally inert - will you fertilize? (I think I might have opted to add a fair amount of compost or vermicompost)
no, fertilizer generally is not needed for these plants, as they get all of their nutrition from eating bugs. In fac,t if you use enriched soils, it will often burn or kill the plants entirely.
Slightly off topic but where do you buy your tanks and what make are most of them?
I know this is over a year old, and I am not sure if you get updates on your messages. I would have a very difficult time in your yard due to the fact you’d have to drag me kicking and screaming out of it. Just sayin
