Hello Dr Ganguly! A bangladeshi 4th year MBBS student here. Your insight into this topic was really interesting to hear. Your generation was truly the most blessed in terms of the state of the world and education in general. We have truly been put in a rather precarious position in time.
I did my masters in 2006 in Texas . At that time I got partial scholarship and I had to wait for a semester then I got a on campus RA job . What I agree is .. over the time the inflow got compounded from India and scholarship decreased
My brother recently got into a very competitive state university with full funding for his MS degree in statistics. He didn’t have a penny to go to the US but everything at the end worked out for him because his application was near perfect with an excellent recommendation letter, great GRE and TOEFL scores, having a research background and being an IITian.
Great. Yes gre is a way to show you are really good as grades of universities don’t give much information. Also if the professors know of your university and had good experience with past students from there then that can help a lot. Beat wishes to your brother
@ his gpa was slightly above average. What we realised is that his recommendation letter did all the heavy lifting as it was from a professor who is from an elite university in the US. He could have gotten easily into Ivy League had it not been for the exorbitant tuition fees they charge with no scholarships provided. Also there are multiple factors like you mentioned which all plays a role. Thanks for this video! Very insightful
I got admitted to Masters degree in Economics at Vanderbilt University way back in 2004 (leading to Ph.D.). However, they simply denied any scholarship despite knowing my capabilities. Neoliberalism in education finished many students' prospects.
I mostly agree with you. However, you did miss one important phenomenon. Many international students used to join the PhD programs so that they could get the full funding (in most cases just barely enough due to the foreign/non-resident differential fee), but would quit after getting the masters. Somehow, the Chinese (yes, they tended to be older and in many instances already married) stuck to completing the PhD, while majority of the Indian students quit and managed to get jobs after the masters (on the average, getting a job in Engineering and CS was a bit easier at the time if one had done a reasonably decent project). It seemed that the universities did not have a legal mechanism to stop such students or perhaps the schools did not care much.
@@Drganguli Sorry, the numbers don't lie. There are few Indians who did PhD and have productive, but most ended being PMs. I see a lot of Indians not being 1, like arguing over futile things like who is better north or south. The Chinese are more interested in the technical skill set building a product working together, looking at how many Chinese apps and tech have been competing in the current world market.

Hi Dr. Ganguly, First of all i would like to say thank you on behalf of all the students for providing such honest and insightful info. I have a question, I have done my Btech in ECE with 7.9 CGPA passed out in 2024, planning to give GRE and i also have 1 internship as Software Engineering Intern. I am planning for my masters in cs this year or the next year but i am very confused about the bad situation where students are finding difficulties to find internships and jobs. It"ll be if great help if you could advice me wether i should gain more experience in India then pursue masters later on in life or should i come to US or explore other options as I have very limited funds? Will it be worth to take such huge loans to pursue MS in CS from US?
Yes the jobs market in this usa is currently not good and there is likelihood of restrictions on the h1b and f1 visas. Many f1 visas are also being rejected. It may be a good idea to get a year or two of experience in India and then apply.
Hello Dr. Gangul, thank you for sharing such valuable content through your videos. I have a question regarding pursuing a fully funded PhD scholarship in Computer Science with a specialization in Machine Learning. What factors should a master's student consider while studying in their home country to enhance their chances of securing such opportunities? Additionally, is it possible to start a PhD application during the final semester of a master’s program? How can one effectively convince the selection committee of their suitability, given that the master’s degree certificate is not yet available? I would greatly appreciate your insights. Thank you!
Mostly the selection committee figures out the candidates capability from bachelor’s degree and masters’degree transcripts even if the degree is not there. The courses taken and references are also important. Any tests like gre or toefl or ielts also help. CFA is a good credential, but it may be difficult to get into a top PhD program. It depends on the research you would do, and the professor you would want to work with.

Yes true in some sense. Though logistics was tough due to no smart phones and online submissions etc. the competition was much less.

Yes it is a case of supply and demand. As people pay full put of state tuition the universities have become reluctant to give masters scholarships

Are non-hindi speaking Indian professors in USA and Europe forced to communicate in hindi by the Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi students?
No u have not seen any such cases. No one can force you to talk in any language.
@Drganguli Is social interaction extremely limited in Europe unlike India?
@ yes it is quite less especially if you don’t know the local language. Unless you find some people who speak English or your language
