'So much plastic!': British diver films deluge of waste off Bali

- Diver Rich Horner has captured video of himself swimming through water densely strewn with plastic waste and yellowing food wrappers, with the occasional tropical fish darting around.
The footage was shot at a dive site called Manta Point, a cleaning station for the large rays on the island of Nusa Penida, about 20km from the popular Indonesian holiday island of Bali.

I dived in Bali 25 years ago. Beautiful soft corals in all colors and crystal clear sea. I am grateful I saw paradise before we lost it.
Poor sea creatures have to suffer for our acts...its time we wake up...or we will choke our own planet to death...

Absolutely revolting. What are we doing to this planet! I’ve been diving for over 25 years and never saw such a thing till the last 5-10 years. To all all divers out there... please use your dives and “net bags” to clear a few pieces each time. We can help however small the action.

My daughter and me always take up plastic as we go. Once she cleaned a whole beach before swimming. If her generation will stop what mine generation did wrong there is hope. At just 11 she have a huge knowledge about polution and how and why we should change, and she is seeing what my generation overlooked and did wrong that is hurting our own planet. My family have changed our lifestyle understanding that we can do a difference, with help from a future generation that we build a future for ☺️.
My fiance and I have been volunteers in Catalina Island, Ca. for an annual trash clean up, where several hundreds of divers, we gathered there and take tons of trash out from several feet deep in the island. It is so sad to see what we have done to our oceans. Yes, I agree, we need to spread the word and educate people. We all leave in this amazing gem. Our Planet Earth! We must take care of it!
This is really bad. If our oceans are in this much trouble all life is in danger.

FJ Unger yesterday, I don't use much of them to be honest. here in the UK we're quite good at recycling and would point the blame on the poorer countries
using plastic bottles isn't the problem, dumping them in the ocean is.
paul paul No.I think plastic bottle or plastic in general IS the problem.If we could replace them with something less wasteful it would be great.
Recycling plastic.... I'm sure you don't mean using the bottle more than once. If you mean "recycling" as in throwing it in the bin for the recycling truck to pick up then you're part of the problem.
I clean up daily in the forest where I walk with my dog. Huge organizations like TheOceanCleanup, 4Ocean, Ocean Conservancy, World Clean Up day etc are all helping to clean up this mess. What are you doing?

I just shared a video called "BALI IS A DUMP!" Had a few people on social media have a go at me for giving the video such a negative title when I only have a footage of one particular beach. Seeing this video makes it clear there is a serious problem in Bali. Something really needs to be done about this.
if governments cared they would force manufacturing to stop using plastics. However the governments of the world have allowed us all to be solely dependent on plastics for profit

Are the smallest particles sinking to the bottom? how does algae blooms effect the plastic particles. and can we create plastics that are broken down by salt water by incorporating metals that rust or something similar.. an iron plastic compound or something. I'm pretty sure you could create a swimming robot that uses plastics as a fuel source.

The oceans produce 70% of the world's oxygen, so we need to keep them as clean as possible.
The real question is how can we solve this? Instead of blaming tourists and locals we should think about finding solutions. The locals are not very well off financially, the tourists aren't very caring cause it's not gonna be their home. We need to completely call for a global financial ocean aid to clean this off and put a tax on plastic. Thats the only option I see. Forget about beauty, the world will starve if we don't act now.

The plastic bags are not the worst. All the Asians countries also contaminate the ocean with untreated sewage drains. The largest contribution to this is being made by India.

cvetlana64, да надо срочно двигаться в этом направлении. Очень много вещей можно производить из материалов, заменяющих пластик. Пластик - это продукт переработки нефти, он настолько же опасен, если не больше, как разлив нефти в океане, и никто не говорит о катастрофе.
Какой Бангладеш, у нас рядом с городами дымят ядовитые пластиковые свалки, как торф, только на много порядков опаснее

Сжигать мусор еще хуже чем его просто выкидывать. Куча токсичной дряни выделяется при сжигании мусора и особенно пластика. Просто лёжа на земле пластик гораздо меньше вреда приносит. Хотя выглядит это конечно плохо.
Океаны, моря и реки слишком загрязнены, морские обитатели не должны страдать из-за нашего дерьма. Пластик обнаруживают в желудках морских птиц и рыб, это причина их сметри. Если при сжигании выделяется что-то вредное, то пусть люди этим и дышат, заслужили! или решают вопрос с фильтрами и уловителями.
Животные тоже будут этим дышать и в землю это будет опадать и в реки. И эти вещи очень вредные - гораздо вреднее чем просто пластик. Фильтры только частично решают проблему и очень дороги. Нужно какое-то другое решение. Нужны новые искусственные материалы, которые разлагаются.
Человек уникальное создание, все загадит...

Пластик это еще не самое страшное. У всех азиатов неочищенные канализационные стоки также уходят в океан. Больше всех Индийский океан загрязняет Индия.
Ну, положим говно-то океан ещё может перерабатывать, а вот полипропилены не разлагаются столетиями.
Там кроме говна еще моющие средства от стиральных машин, кухонных моек и душевых. В Латинской Америке аналогичная ситуация, но они хоть с унитазов льют не на улицу, а в 4-метровые колодцы под домами (которые никогда не выгребаются), откуда вода просачивается в водоносные слои, а фекалии прессуются и складируются штабелями под домами.
Венесуэла чистоплотнее всех в Латинской Америке, у них самая высокая урбанизация в регионе, и поэтому 25% всех канализационных стоков подвергается нормальной очистке.
We knew it for a long time : plastic pollution in seas. Unfortunately even this video won't change anithing because no one is interested by the subject, because no one really win money with this. All of our plastic is not reused because these are not enough industry to do it. So it is burnt, hidden under the ground, or send in countries who say oh I do it and you give me money, but we don't know how this country will do with our plastic... In France, in Europe we don't have enough company to reused plastic. So imagine in other countries. I have seen this plastic pollution in Egypt, in Maroc, in Portugal, in fact you will find plastic everywhere. by eating a fish you eat plastic. Thank you for the diver who had the courage to dive in this plastic sea.
