People will still attend the concerts for nostalgia sake. In these days 50+ year olds will do and pay anything to try to replicate 1985 for an hour or two
I have always loved and appreciate Don Dokken and Dokken. Don is an Awesome Dude and I love the new Record, "Heaven Comes Down". During the 80s Dokken was my favorite Band. Up from the Ashes is an amazing records that deserves to sell way more. I now love Broken Bones and Heaven Comes Down. I totally Love listening to Levin's guitar playing and the rest of the band sounds awesome. The Harmonies of Dokken and New Band mates are amazing.
Cool interview! I am looking forward to the new album! As a fan of ALL of Don's work, I wish that Dokken would focus on their 21st century material in their performances. I understand Don's point that many fans want to hear the classic 80's material, however IMHO, much of Don's best work is from the last 20+ years, yet they rarely perform any of it. It is unlikely that fans would be disappointed hearing more recent songs live, as the tunes on "Lightning Strikes Again", "Broken Bones", "Long Way Home", "Erase the Slate" and "Hell to Pay" are qualitatively as good, or better than the best material on the classic 80's records. And I LOVE "Solitary", which has a beautiful atmosphere and great performances. I hope that Don releases more music in that vibe. Thanks for sharing all of the music Don!
I agree I would have liked to hear music of lightning strikes again, broken bones, and hell to pay, and erase the slate, i realize alot of fans want to hear only the first 4 albums I love the music of all of them when they played to high to fly most seemed to not know that song and that's a killer song
I had the pleasure of meeting Don and the rest of the original lineup and they all seemed like great guys. Dokken was always one of the top bands from the 80's and they were musically above the rest of the bands at that time.
I really enjoy dons interviews he is always interesting and I can't wait until the new album comes out thanks Don for the great music over the years and all the great musicians that have been in the band
He definitely seems like a cool dude but let's be realistic , his voice is completely shot and he doesn't even sing the songs. He talks through them with his mic turned down as low as possible so you can barely hear him. Which is probably a good thing , what you hear on the new album will sound nothing like that live unfortunately!
Don is a legend that most don't understand. Absolute master at the craft. Love everything he's involved with till the end. Awesome part is everything he's done is recorded for all of us to enjoy!
Dokken in my opinion is one of the best bands that came out in the 80's. Way better than most that got bigger than them. Really looking forward to the new album When Heaven Comes Down. Love the first single Fugitive big time. Love the current lineup, and love the whole catalog big time as well. Excellent interview!
absolutely an A league band, underappreciated because of the genre they are associated with which is unfortunate. How many bands had backing vocals like them with 3 singers. Don not even the best singer in that band...Jeff was. The new album is called Heaven comes down.......When ...was a song off Tooth and Nail
Big Dokken fan. Great interview and I’m grateful to have seen Dokken In 2022. Was a fun concert. Preordered the new album on CD. Hope the extra four songs get released sometime.
The Up From The Ashes album is a masterpiece beck to neck with Back For The Attack for me. I’d love to hear some of those songs that didn’t make the UFTA record. It’s too bad that band didn’t stick around long enough for a second album with that lineup if guys.
I totally understand the high note issue, because ya can’t control what aging deals to ya. THANK GOD Don sings on key unlike MANY others. Still one of my favorites ever. 👍👍
I loved listening to Dokken in the 80's. It was a time when we were young and life was exciting. I remember the rock bands playing at the night clubs it was a great time!
my wife had a little procedure done on her back now she sits on the couch on oxygen my back is fkd and it'll stay that way I've dealt with it this long I'm not having a doctor gamble on my back sorry that happened to you Don take care and loved your music from the time I heard "Paris is Burning" on the radio one late night so keep on Rockin with DOKKEN I'll always remember a new years eve show at the cowpalace DIO, DOKKEN AND Y&T great show with great bands
Don mentioned 'acorn'. I knew him. It was TheAcorn. For a short time I was an admin on that forum and spoke to Don a few times about those negative comments. I also did a very short stint working on the Dokken website back then - this was like early to mid-90's. I remember when I was creating the Dokken logo for the top of the page, Don wanted it to be sharp and like the original. I had drawn it myself. I still have a lot of that art from back then. I'd love to talk to Don again, his number has changed since then though. Tell him hello from N2TheFire. :)
@laughingmonkeymusic - I'm also in CT, I am so bummed I missed this gig at The Big E but I was out of state for wedding. I hope he comes back somewhere nearby. Very cool interview, I liked the conversational style. I will check your catalog for sure and I just subscribed.
There was one singer as well Don didn’t mention had a gift from god as well, Kevin Dubrow sounded exactly the same up until the day he passed tragically from drug problems. Though he was only 52 when he passed so who knows how he would’ve sounded now.
Big early Dokken Fan. Whatta cool band. Jeff Pilson and George Lynch! Dons vocals on the 80s records were quite good, good melodies, and harmonies. A lot of that was Jeff Pilson making Don sound better. Their live shows even in the 80s Don was always running around the stage out of breath. Couldn’t hit the high notes because he was out of breath. He wasn’t breathing properly as a singer. You can learn to sing in five minutes, but it will take you five years to learn. It’s all about the breathing. Cigarettes, orange juice, beer barley.. all that stuff, destroys and shrinks your vocal cords. Dis the corn dogs inflammation for fruits n vegetables. When singers get older sometimes they lose an octave. Unless you’re Glenn Hughes. Lol it’s not what it used to be is it. The 80s party we all indulged in his long gone. People are either retired with kids, or no longer with us. It’s great to keep the Music alive. But if Babe Ruth can’t hit a homer, it’s a good time to call it quits.
Good for Don to address the vocal issues. It is so lame to see hacks parrot the same insipid takes all of the time. If you do not like the way he sounds, do not pay to see it. We do not need an update that you grasp the obvious
Good interview, but next time please use a good microphone for yourself and upgrade your own stream because as soon as you talk, you cannot hear the other person. Greetings
The Title-Don Dokken struggles with vocals, yeah this can be detrimental in a Band aspect, really though, wish people weren't so critical, had problems with my own vocals[solution-quit smoking cigarretes and pot-drink Bengal spice tea with clove powder, vocals perfect now]Hope to inspire change for anyone[especially Don] in a solution to the problem. After hearing Dokken play-You Just Got Lucky-Alone Again-at American bandstand 1985,Love Don for his super crisp vocals-give credit where credit is due, cheers.
Loove dokken and don. Such an amazing storyteller. I remember an interview he did saying that he'd like to have a song writing class or something like that. To teach artist on how to write a song. He would be amazing at that. Id pay for it. Lol
I think it works best if u work in 1 new song I saw them in 87 in Cleveland and they played Kiss of Death nobody heard it yet crowd went nuts then album comes out and wow
Not only does Don's voice sound bad on stage but it sounds worn-out just SPEAKING. The great Eddie Trunk always says, some of these guys just stay too late at the party and unfortunately Don is part of that cohort. Can't wait to see what type of studio trickery to make the new album sound decent. I mean if they can do it with Ozzy why not dd?
His insecurity about not being as good as Def Leppard during Pyromania album era and him being uncomfortable following Metallica at Monsters of rock is very interesting.
I cant believe that metallica was back in the hay day just one of the reasons why dokken broke up, I truly believe to this day, dokken should have gotten for recognition, I mean listen to the live track mr scary beast from the east 88, that song live from Japan is fucking loud and heavy, it actually beats metallica one by a lot, and one by metallica is just snare drumming.
Hes looking well for his age didn't know he still smoked. Seems like a cool enough guy ive heard many interviews of him on the classic metal show. Im not a fan of his music though, but we all like what we like.
I don't like the way he knocked low paid workers in subway, not everyone is fortunate enough to be young in the 80s when it was easy to get signed up as a band and make great money.
Get rid of Kiss Of Death, Don't Close Your Eyes, Paris is burning, and do 2 new songs and maybe one from the previous 2 albums. And maybe cut Too High to Fly as well. Seen Dokken so many times I couldn't even count, always the same setlist pretty much.
Ya.. Some people are studio singers and some are Live.. that's Just the way it goes I quit worrying about my voice after Hagar said he ate peanut butter n bacon sandwiches.. lol So I quit the tea and honey.. now I just do it Good advice Ronnie James
Saw them every time they came to Rhode Island...they destroyed Aerosmith when they opened for them in 84-85ish....first 2 new songs on the new album are solid!!! Don may be the biggest name dropper Eva...🤣😂
Don has lost a tad been a fan since the 70s when he was in Europe and then when he finally got to be heard and make it I. The USA. He always took pretty descent care of his vocals okay drugs and smoking didn’t help but he would die his scales daily. Have his Japanese drink to clear out his flem and whatever else was in his throat nightly. Stuff was expensive cause I asked how I could get it he told me the price and was out of my range lol 😂. He was my vocal coach for a short time. He also was Terri and look how well he went. You heard a lot of Don in him the first album. Going back. Don just can’t do night after night anymore come on he has had health issues and his age does factor in. People just need to appreciate him while he is still around. I wasn’t thrilled with some later albums but I tried to see what he was doing. Personally I don’t think he should have went nuts with Shadow Like. Dysfunctional wasn’t bad a tad heavier but good. His new album is good considering everything he is dealing with and still sing that well and write. I still like it!!!!!❤
Thanks for feedback about how you feel about me person Ive never met! I'm just a Dad offering up free content for other music lovers. Instead o putting something negative to the world by insulting strangers for no reason. Honestly you don't even know me .....
He's lying like hell when he said he's "Never" done coke. That's funny because in a separate podcast he says he tried it when he was 20 or 22 years old. Not to mention when you see him in an interview at the Monsters Of Rock festival '88-89, he's fucking lit like Christmas tree. He's just another one of those "rockstars" that tries to act like he didn't do drugs or even try any of those drugs...ok Ted, ok Gene.
Kingdom Come's first and especially their second album, "In Your Face" are far better than any Dokken album...even though Dokken still rule. Greta Van Fleet, Billy Squier, Soundgarden..ect all have a Zeppelin "Sound", some more than others, but it's by far better than ANYTHING coming out now...in the 21st century.
thanks for this - you got some interesting new details out of Don regarding Shadowlife, Dysfunctional, etc.
Thank you! I try to ask different questions if i can!
sorry no offence to anyone... i dont care what they say , to me Don still sounds great after all these years. thanks
Well said
Finally someone who doesn’t bash him. Thank you so much.
IM 13 and im friends with george lynch, don is such a sweet sweet man. i think his voice sounds good and he doesnt deserve that
Hearing clinics can do wonderful things these days, I'd suggest making an appointment.
@@ryanday633don doesn’t sing like Steve Perry anymore but he can still sing good in his range
Don DGAF…lol…smoking cigs and drinking wine. People will knock the guy for these things and I used to but nice to see him happy and comfortable!
He is happy …
Unfortunately that's not helping his voice

I absolutely love that we get new Dokken music and I personally hope this isn't the last
i hope so too friend. been waiting patiently since broken bones, i hope there is more after the new album
Don is a straight shooter which is great. The insecure fans are the problem not his voice

Thought I'd remembered Breaking the Chains originally coming out as Don Dokken rather than just Dokken.
