Eric performs some summer cutback on a Root-Over-Rock Japanese Black pine that was the subject of a video 18 months ago.
Summer cutback is the best way to create compact growth on a pine while simultaneously allowing a sacrifice branch to bulk up the wood.
00:00:45 - There have been two spurts of growth since the last video - the spring 2023 growth and spring 2024 growth.
00:01:15 A quick review of the basic decandling technique
00:02:15 An example of normal decandling
00:02:20 An Alternate method - Cutback behind the node
00:03:10 A look at the mass of branching that Eric wants to control.
00:04:37 The sacrifice branch, Eric removes a large side branch from the sacrifice branch to reduce shading and hormone inhibition.
00:05:22 About halfway done with cutback on the low branching.
00:06:20 Eric contemplates a future design possibility for the top.
00:07:05 A look at the roots and rock, with tubing holding them together.
00:08:00 Discussion of the future of the tree as a result of the work.

Great content as usual. I recently purchased your juniper online course and watched it. I found it super helpful and concise. I'll also purchase the one on Japanese Black pines soon. I have a few hundred young junipers and juniper cuttings and around 100 3 year old JBPs on the shelf that I grew from seed, so these videos seem to be made for me. :D Just wanted to let you know that your content is really appreciated also outside of the US.

Thank you. This was very reassuring as I did very much the same thing today with the two JBP two-year root over rock seedlings which I purchased from you two years ago...

I’ve got some of these Bonsaify black pines adjusting to the Georgia sun! They are looking great, but time to cut back and guide the growth.

For young JBP in development would you recommend decandling and repotting within the same spring season?

When you expose the roots, how much do you expose each time? How often can you expose more roots?

I'd say 4-6" vertical at a time, and not more than a couple times per year to be safe. But it also depends on how vigorous the plant is growing - if it's ripping along then likely you can go a bit faster because the roots will have run faster into the container below.
