Someone said that the reason men hate gays, get so upset when they find out someone they know is gay or get hit on by a gay man is because they are afraid that that gay man will treat them like heterosexual men treat women. Not taking no for an answer, not respecting theyr body autonomy or rape them.

Thank you sir, for a brilliant review. In the early 90's (when I was in my early 20's) I had a friend named Max. He had just turned 21 when I met him and he had AIDS. When he was a teen his father found out that Max was Gay. He then threw his son out a 3rd story window. Max then escaped to California then up here to Seattle. When he told me about his life he said he didn't think he deserved to live or be loved.
His self hatred was so bad when he got real sick he refused help. Then his lung collapsed and he went into a coma. A week later when he was taken off the ventilator and took hiss last breath, he was being held by a room full of people. So many in fact we were over flowing from his hospital room. He was loved more than he knew, just like everyone else who died from this wretched disease in the 80's & 90's.
Thank you Frank for your kindness. You are a beacon of hope. Be strong.

I wonder how many people catch the major significance of that last scene in the hospital room with Denzel He sits close to him on the bed, then touches his face as he places his oxygen mask back on. That small act shows the HUGE leap Denzel's character has made! ❤ Then he shows up at the funeral with his wife and baby girl.

I remember watching an interview with Johnathan Demme when the movie came out. He asked Neil Young to write a song for the movie and he came up with "Philadelphia" but Demme thought it was too introspective and somber so he asked Springsteen to write a song. He also came up with an introspective and somber song so Demme realized the songwriters had it right. He decided to open with Springsteen and close with Young, which bookended the movie perfectly.

I lived this in 1989. As the surviving partner I never contracted AIDS. But when my partner did I lost my job, many friends (including gay), and family members (including my mother). I'm 70 now, but will never forget my partners' family pulling up in a truck two days after he died. They said they had the right to his property since gay marriage wasn't legal at the time. And I was too distraught to do anything.

I was already a divorced single mom when the first indication of AIDS appeared in 1981.
By the end of the decade, so many people had passed away. I believe everyone knew someone who had contracted HIV and perished, usually in an alarmingly short time (on average, about 15 months).
Reagon took office on January 20, 1981 and left on January 20, 1989, bookending the start and the worst of this epidemic, yet he never directly addressed the problem. There was no mobilization of support or problem solving, no concern even when the virus threatened the nation's blood donor supply or when women could contract AIDS from heterosexual sex or children from blood transfusions. Almost 90,000 Americans perished under Reagon's watch; that's not counting the undiagnosed or those who 'unalived' themselves rather than suffer or leave huge medical bills to loved ones.
I lived through the period that slowly gathered information on how it spread, how it functioned, how it was mutating. I remember when a positive diagnosis was a death sentence, and the death was a miserable, painful process. I recall how medical records mentioning HIV could cost a person their medical insurance just when they needed it most and how gay men could be refused access or a voice in treatment for their hospitalized partner even if they'd been living together for decades because the hospital did not consider them 'immediate family'. I watched via news reports as one small community ran a hemophiliac child with AIDS out of town to another small community who welcomed him with grace and mercy.
I met a new friend in 1982; our second meeting, he told me that between our meetings he had been tested and was found positive. We stayed in touch over the next few years as his condition worsened. I was asked by the friend who was providing him a bed in his home to come stay with my friend while the host attended Sunday mass, which I gladly did. My friend was skeletal and appeared to be on his last legs. I expected this would be the last I saw of him. To my surprise, I was asked to return the next Sunday, and my friend somehow looked worse. Later the following week, I got a call at work; my friend had passed. It was my birthday that day. I could not finish my workday.
I attended the church service and the funeral; I was a mess. My friend had taken great pride in his career as a nurse and had reapplied for his license. It arrived after his death and was placed in his coffin. His name was memorialized on the National AIDS Quilt. I was so glad I had given him some comfort during my final Sunday visits, climbing into his sick bed and holding him like a child so he could sleep. Too many AIDS patients were treated like lepers and longed for human contact.
So many of the great creative and charitable individuals, in many ways the best of America, were lost in that epidemic. This film is based on a true story, though basically stolen by the studio; after years of litigation, compensation was finally rendered.
There is intentional irony in the film's title "Philadelphia"; it translates as 'City of Brotherly Love'.

I lived through the '80's AIDS epidemic. I happened to be renting rooms in a house owned by a woman who was president of an orchestra. It was a very frightening time in the music industry. Several times someone would seem normal one week, be sick the next week, then dead the following week. We have come so far since then, both in terms of attitudes and treatments. Now it is a survivable, though not yet curable, disease thanks to modern medicine.
This movie went a long way to normalizing AIDS in society the same way Rain Man helped to normalize autism.
As the father of a trans daughter I know full well the social stigma, leading to suicidal ideation that the LGBTQ+ community faces. As to "preaching to the choir," well a local politician once said, "Sometimes the choir needs choir practice."

In my eyes, this was Tom Hanks best acting credit, by a country mile, maybe because it's more "true to life" than any other movie he has starred in.

    You Sir,
are a wholesome as heck and big hearted dude.
Philadelphia is a beautiful movie that speak some heavy truth's. We are indeed all shaped by the world around us so it is important to have an open mind.
I had a thought or two when you were questioning the absurdity and inhumanity of some of the people who justify someone's death by them paying for their sins. I think that they do so because they believe that the world is inherently just.
If they were to admit to themselves that it isn't so then that would also mean that either their god isn't t omnipotent or that their god is simply unjust.
That's too much for many of them to handle as their beliefs are a cornerstone of not only their world view but also their personality.
So they aren't necessarily stupid per say but it's more so that they are desperately trying to keep their "world" intact.
That's at least how it looks to an silly atheist like myself.
Thanks for the nice company while rewatching this old classic.

That is a fascinating perspective and I agree. Sometimes I think to myself "There's no way, deep down, this person doesn't know what they're doing in the name of religion is wrong" but like you said that belief system is a Cornerstone of their whole lives. Without it they might just break down and not know what to do with their lives.
I appreciate your perspective and you joining a conversation. Thanks for watching
