Being emo in Australia, especially Queensland, is a whole other level. Nothing worse than sweating at the beach on a 40 degree day but still wearing skinny jeans, a band tee and a spikey black leather jacket but refusing to remove it because teenage angst

seriously Emma thank you for this, this made me feel so scene--er I mean, seen! I never had an emo phase growing up but in the last couple years I have become obsessed with the music (MCR, Mayday Parade, Jimmy Eat World, so on) and so while my fashion aesthetic is not emo (although emo fashion is tons of fun to look at), my soul definitely is lol. I totally feel you with the "it's not really a phase" thing because to me, emo isn't just a fashion aesthetic or a musical style--it's a part of who I am: a very emotional person, and those emotions don't have to be sad or negative. All emotions are part of "emo" to me, and I love music and art that's designed to express that--always have, always will. Also YES ROCKING THE 100 GECS MERCH YOUR MUSIC TASTE IS CLEARLY CULTURED bless your soul ✨

I think this is my favourite video of the year. It made me remember that my first Facebook picture back in like 2007 was Roxas from Kingdom Hearts crying in the rain with his hood up.
EMMA the editing here is everything hahaha! I also went through a similar phase when I was younger (though probably more punk than emo) and even though it's a little cringe to look back on, I really applaud myself for not giving a crap about what other people thought about it ;-)

I wasn't what you would call emo, but in the UK we had a term "mosher"... I was probably closest to that, quite a bit of crossover with emo though. Seeing your photos and especially your transformation, took me right back to my teens, thank you!🤘 You still have it by the way, you totally rocked that look!
The music that you listen to during those foundational years sticks with you for the rest of your life.. I too still listen to the same music that I did back then, I even find it difficult at times to get into new music. Lyrics aren't as easy to remember, but I still remember most of "my music" word for word, you know?
Fun fact! My friend, brother in law and father to my nephew, was the guitarist in a band that supported Bring Me The Horizon, for a couple of gigs back when they were just performing small academy gigs around the UK.. He isn't in that band anymore, and I don't even know if they are still around.. But yea, cool little bit of history for him.
Fellow Brisbane emo here! I have been watching you for years & only NOW am I finding out that you were a Hungry Jacks emo kid...Amazing! My boyfriend was apparently also a HJs emo but idk lol. I was emo but had a very diverse group of friends so I didn't get to experience much of the actual fun emo activities.

I miss my emo/goth days. Even though they were some of the worst years of my life mental health wise, I feel the goth subculture really helped me get through it. In fact, I got bullied less when I became a goth and stopped trying to fit in. You're correct in that we never really grow out of it. I still listen to the music I did back then, I still wear mostly black and I still have the coloured hair. I just also developed a taste for very cutesy things too.
It’s true, that emo phase never really goes away, it’s always going to be part of you... I have similar pictures like that where I reminisce about the past listening to some really hardcore screamo, being with my emo boyfriend. Those where the days...
Hell yea I aprove Emma. That style looks so good on you! Shit I was emo back in the day but mine time was like 6-10th grade. Listened to Linkin Park, Korn, Distrubed, August Burns Red, The Offspring, Evanescense, Attack Attack, Tokio Hotel, Fall out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Paramore, Jimmy Eats World, AFI, All American Rejects, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Rage Against the Machine, Muse, Gorillaz, Raised by Wolves, The Killers, and others.
I remember by Myspace song was Coming Undone by Korn and my friend helped me make my myspace gritty and dark. Still remember my first mosh pit, definitely wish I could go back in time.
I would tag pics, but I was that "taking pics and posting them is mainstream kind guy". Only would share new songs or crazy dark art on my myspace lol.
I mean I think still rocking some emo style here and there would look great.
Have you checked out the yami kawaii subculture over there? Barely found out and about it, and they seem like some cool people. They combined being kawaii with morbid/grotesque type elements.

My emo phase lasted all of 30 seconds, which is how long it took me before I poked myself in the eye with an eye pencil.
Same, was emo-ish minus the hardware and dye since I had no money. Dollar store mascara and eyeliner smudged easy so it worked. Bed head hair was my favourite half decade of hair.
It shifted to a bit more punk. Then colourful vintage 50's. Now it's sporty casual with a splash of goth/emo. But the piercing/jewelry is only weekends due to social/healthcare field .
Ok the emo look suits you! I feel like 2020 is adults reminiscing about their teen years & getting lost in the nostalgia of it all. Especially since this year sucks

I was punk in highschool; red mohawk, black clothes, boots or chucks, lip pierced, ears gauged. I've always had an eclectic taste in music but punk/ska was always my favorite and still is. Definitely grew out of the fashion for the most part, but it's shaped who I am today.
That montage was so nostalgic for me. And it's fun to see you let loose and be more silly with your editing and acting, you should do that more often!
Omg. I love you so much Emma. 😂 you are so right. We never truly outgrow the “phase”. I also got into “emo” fashion and trends in middle school. I was really into good charlotte. They were my first inspiration for tattoos. Black clothes. Dark eye make up. Then ny ink was always on tv and I discovered kat von d. I went from good charlotte to Metallica to bullet for my valentine. And while my music hasn’t changes AT ALL, my clothes have. But once I discovered my skinny jeans, black v-necks, hoodies, and vans or converse, this is kind of where I have been for the last 10+ years. 😂😂😂 I guess some would call me “hipster” but like. There’s so many different styles within the term “hipster”.
I totally feel you on still liking the fashion! I was a huge metalhead/gothy dude and I don't dress that way anymore, but I'm still super attracted to that alternative style.
This video is so tragic. She admits that she was bullied, and this forced her to stop expressing herself publicly. She then goes on to admit that this is still a part of her, its just that now its hidden away instead of being a facet of her personality. We should all be free to be ourselves without fear, and not have to hide away parts of ourselves from other people.

I didn't wear the clothes or the make up but my playlist definitely was 90% emo when I was a young (boy) gal. Now it's more like 30% but you are right, it never fully goes away and I love it

So funny, I love MCR and started listening to them again recently. I never really stopped though. I wasn't emo but I dug their sound.
I didn't hit my Emo/Scene phase until college around 2008 but god do I love it. It never leaves you, I find most people just grow up and adapt it into their adult style without all the wristbands and makeup and make it more "formal". I still wear my neon band clothes from back then since they still fit and still wear mostly black, I just got rid of the 10 neon wristbands on each arm and replaced them with tattoos, some of my fave emo/scene bands lmao.
I was actually Alesana's social media manager for about a year in 2015, super cool guys. I wish that sub-culture would make a comeback, nothing makes me tear up like when Attack Attack or Riot era Paramore comes on shuffle. You can't even buy black and white studded belts at Hot Topic anymore :(
