as I said ROB glorifies their journey a bit and doesn't show their hardships pretty much at all, which is why this might shock you but bts were VERY close to disbanding before this due to lack of funds, they weren't doing well enough to stay afloat monetarily.
Yoongi said that he actually wrote I Need U with the mindset that it was their last song, they thought they were going to be forced to disband, but thankfully I Need U blew up in a major way and saved them, after that every release was bigger than the last :)
BTS were monster rookies who did very well with making fans and having that connection, but it's expensive to be in the kpop industry and having a lot of fans doesn't cut it.
They got no work outside of music that would give them money, they weren't paid for a lot of their gigs, they couldn't book things like commercials, appearances etc, all because they were from a small company, but small company idols really need those things to bring in revenue.
This is also why wins on music shows are very important to small labels, especially that first win, because it signals to other shows and companies that the idols are popular and worth hiring/bringing on to shows, it brings a lot of job opportunities with it.
This was also their second major disbandment scare, because before danger they were also very close to being forced to disband, but BigHit actually got an investment from another company before danger which helped them get danger out. They put their everything into danger, including the new investment money, and when danger didn't do as well as their previous song that's when they thought they were doomed, but thankfully their next release was I Need U

The age they were referring to was their korean age. And yes they're 19-24 in korea but internationally they're just 17-22. Actually their albums' conceots werr all based/patterned on their ages. As what Bang PD said, their music should be made from their experiences, thoughts, etc. As they grow in age & mature, the concepts, ideas changed.

Others have told you that this MV is the start to the Bangtan Universe (BU). I didn’t see anyone explain that this evolved and the story is told through many MVs, short films, a book, Notes (from each of the members), a video game and has now also been made into a drama for Netflix (not sure if it’s aired yet or not). The storyline is complex and I don’t want to give any spoilers in case you decide to dive in later (please consider doing this; it’s fascinating). BTS and Bang PD have made statements that seem to confirm that they will be picking back up on the storyline when they comeback in 2025. That year is the 10 year anniversary of I Need You. One more thing, the lyrics as originally written were, “I Need You, Friend”, but it didn’t sound right musically, so they changed it to “Girl”. Borahae 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I Need U literally changed everything for BTS and BigHit. In spite of some of the concerts and events that you've seen in the series so far, BTS wasn't really a financial success a the time. Their 2nd EP hadn't done as well monetarily as they expected and this new album was do-or-die for the company. In fact its one of the reasons they went to LA aside from the variety show, they needed investors. They talk about the "sweet, bitter, sweet, bitter" results to that point in Beyond The Story. That is also why the members have comments like 'we are sorry to the fans' a number of times in the episodes.. the group was continually underestimated and getting hated on so the fan support they received was extra special. Suga was the main member responsible for this album (he also did the intro) and he has talked about the pressure that was on this album to succeed. (Also the financial woes make sajaegi claims even more laughable.)

This is the start of the Bangtan Universe (BU) with I Need U. It basically has a whole storyline where the members act out their roles in an alternate universe. They are all friends but have their own issues (which comes with being a youth, which was what they wanted to represent). The line was actually supposed to be 'I need you, friend', but they changed it for better auditory purposes. But you can take it to mean that they are referring to each other. The BU continued over the years with different music videos, notes, short films and even a mobile game. It is amazing but takes time to understand because it is also very deep and complicated. I'm sure you guys will eventually understand a lot through various reactions. This is what sets BTS apart. They started this thing where a complete universe was created within their discography and a few groups have done that since. I want to say that BTS' is the most complete and amazing stuff.
Without giving too much away (and I hope you watch the music video soon) V's character is someone who is in an abusive household. He and his sister are constantly abused by their alcoholic dad. The scene which you saw is V finally bursting due to his anger and stepping in to save his sister from their dad. I wrote at least this much detail so that it would not be lost in translation for you guys as it sometimes is with first time watchers of BU content.

Most groups in the big 3 win an award show in their first year of debut. it took BTS 2 years and their 3rd album. Very slow in comparison to more established. They definitely were in the "kinda famous" group initially. Obv not now but at the start they were not famous. This was their turning point. Also Suga always wants to hold the trophy and at some point the team hands it to him and he admires it. Even in later years. It is cute and a thing.

I Need You MV is based on their BU (Bangtan Universe), so you need to know the story to understand the mv.
For your info: This period of time when BTS won weekly music programs, Bighit was still poor and accusations of Sajaegi, spending money buying their own albums for charts, were pointless since they were barely making it and surviving at that time. They used their managers, not actors and used their cars for props for the mv. After this album, they started to making it.

I’m so thankful for how much attention you pay to everything that is said and how it’s presented to understand their story. The accusations of chart manipulation were completely baseless (dark and wild, the previous album, needed to sell well bc they were almost bankrupt and on top of that I’m pretty sure bighit was even eventually cleared in court with financial records and stuff), other fandoms and bigger companies were just mad that BTS was outperforming/selling their groups, this wasn’t the last time they’d be falsely accused of it either, as well as many other hardships, such as fabrication of rumors and attempts to sabotage their comebacks and press releases. This was like the top of the top of the iceberg of all these boys have been put through in the K-pop industry.

    1) My friend did her thesis on the BU (Bangtan Universe) which is the storyline behind a lot of music videos of BTS. She had all of the official notes and other related stuff to it and she did really well! The BU is very intriguing but it can be pretty confusing and complicated. In the "I Need U" mv Taehyung (V) attacked and killed his (alcoholic) dad because he was abusive to him and his sister and when he returned home and found his sister getting beat up he interfered and went too far in a fit of rage. There are a lot of different stories for each member that keep occurring in the mvs.
    2) Also about the chart manipulation, antis tried to involve BTS alongside other groups that did chart manipulation who had the resources for it. Their company was almost bankrupt and they had to use their own managers as extras due to a limited budget so the accusations cannot even be taken seriously not only due to BTS' integrity but also the financial inability of their company to pull this off.

17:35 As everyone else mentioned, it was the first chapter of a whole universe that came to life through multiple music video, books, etc.
But on its own, the music video is a masterpiece.
While the song goes along with what everyone associates with youth - love, longing, and heartbreak - the music video showcases the darker side of youth - mental health, bullying, physical abuse, discrimination based on social status, etc. The music video (the 5 minutes 33 seconds one) is a mini kdrama, and the rawness of it was what surprised so many fans and the general public/reactors.

So about I Need U, the song lyrics have nothing to do with the MV. Starting from this album (HYYH Pt 1), most of their MVs between 2015 and 2018 are set in what fans called the Bangtan Universe, which is a fictional universe where each of the BTS members play fictional characters with different story lines. The MVs leave a lot open to interpretation, so there are a lot of fan theories floating around about what the story actually is. I'm pretty sure you guys will find it confusing at first, but it will be fun I promise 😂 Even if you don't actually understand the BU story, the MVs are still beautiful to watch on their own. I can't wait to see your reactions to the BU MVs. The HYYH (Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa or The Most Beautiful Moment in Life in English) and LY (Love Yourself) trilogies are my favorite BTS albums of all time. So many fantastic songs from these albums fr. BTS's musical style changes constantly. That much is clear especially now in the solo era. But HYYH and LY albums are the perfect representation of why ARMYs fell in love with BTS (in my humble opinion).

    • @MinSugaCheonjae
      @MinSugaCheonjae 10 месяцев назад

The HYYH MVs and the album overall are about the strife that people go through during their adolescence, during the time when they are neither children nor full grown adults. It's about young adult love, friendships, fear of failure, working towards your goals - things that we can all relate to at some level.

Since I Need U was released on April 29th, 2015, the age range of 19-24 corresponds to their ages.
    So at the time:
    Jin - 22 going on 23 (Dec)
    Yoongi (Suga) - 22 (March)
    Hoseok (Jhope) - 21 (Feb)
Namjoon (RM) - 20 going on 21 (Sept)
    Jimin - 19 going on 20 (Oct)
    Taehyung (V) - 19 going on 20 (Dec)
    Jungkook - 17 going on 18 (Sept)
The reason why they were saying 19 - 24 is because at that time Koreans added 1 or 2 years (depending on the New Year and actual birthday) to their birth so people usually differentiate between Korean age and international age (the latter is the system that everywhere else uses). But recently a law was passed that 'scrapped' the Korean age system. So for TROB videos just note that when they talk about ages, it's usually the 'Korean age' that they're mentioning.
To explain it further, let's take Jin for example.
Since he was born in 1992
Dec 2014 (birthday has passed): 22 (international age), 23 (Korean age)
New Year 2015: 22 (I A), 24 (K A - since the extra year is only added from the New Year)
    Dec 2015 (birthday and onwards): 23 (I A), 24 (K A).
However since they no longer use that system then Jin would be going on 32 this year.

15:50 EXACTLY!!!! You got it exactly right when you said "what they've been going through" in terms of the vibe of the video. Not necessarily with those specific scenarios, but the songs intent originally wasn't even to sing about needing a girl, it was really about needing each other and the love hate they were having at the time with burnout, not being where they wanted to be in terms of recognition after having worked their asses off since AHL (in the 2021 Festa RM describes their 1st 4 releases as a cycle of sweet (No More Dreams), bitter (ORUL82), sweet (Skool Luv Affair), bitter (D & W)). I'd argue that those who don't get handed things easily work harder than those with privilege - and until BTS broke the wall, groups that weren't from Big3 weren't recognized at all because Big3 dominated everything - it's not just about skills and basic exposure, Big3 had and still have connections in the industry that controls the media and access to platforms used for promotions, which means sabotage of competition - BTS were sabotaged A LOT and still are to this day, bc they have money, but they still don't have the same connections Big3 have bc they didn't dirty their hands the way Big3 did.
BTS especially put a ginormous amount of work compared to Big 3 acts in particular, bc the standards they set were extremely high and they also heavily contributed personally to the music and artistic aspect, unlike many idols. Now some things are changing and more and more idols are participating in writing/producing (although some companies treat idols making music more like a gimmick bc "that's what got BTS famous" than bc they actually want their idols to have artistic freedom, so they push them into these roles to put some credits on the tracklist without helping them to hone their skills). So yes, while all idols work hard, bc you can't be in that industry without working hard, not everyone works as hard. Those outside the Big3 in particular need to work harder just for a fraction of the privilege Big3 acts enjoy.

The song is about how when you find your people, everything is fun and wonderful but when you part from them it can be dark and lonely. just take the tldr that the universe is basically a standalone universe of seven boys going thru their own versions of realistic trauma....the storyline is basically being used to properly convey the emotions (despair, struggle, helplessness, hope, small pockets of joy) of the youth that HYYH album songs focus on.
so just....watch the mvs thru those lens when yalls music reacts chronologically catches up to that(HYYH) era, the message in the mvs will make sense after😂😂 this shi be layered

Oh you are going to love some of the lyrics in their songs going forward. As mentioned, J-Hope has a lyric "it costs you nothing to be kind" (Equal Sign). They talk about keyboard warriors in "Born Singer" (some of which was in ep. 7) and in "UGH" (rapline song) they talk about how displaced anger is such a waste of time and imagine if you put your anger into something useful like changing the wrongs in the world. I Need U is the beginning of the "Bangtan Universe" fictional storyline that runs through many of their MVs. Hard to understand the individual meaning of the meaning of the I Need U MV. Often the meaning of the lyrics in the song and the visuals in the MV tell two different unrelated stories. I loved what you said about "a rising tide raises all ship"...so, so true. Thanks for reacting.

'I Need U' is a bit like a trailer to BTS's fictional storyline - Bangtan Universe. The scenes in it are important to the storyline, but you don't know the story just yet. I won't tell you what it is about but I will tell you this - many of BTS's songs that seem like they're about girls on the surface are actually pretty deep and personal.
'Sajaegi' is buying your own song and albums, or hiring someone to do so, in order to chart higher. It was ridiculous to accuse BTS of it. Like, with what money? They were so broke, the company used BTS's managers as extras in the MV. This was their last ditch effort. People were just mad that a group from a small company beat groups from the big 3 who had a lot more resources and connections.

Others may encourage you to dive in to the BU immediately, but it is very intense and complicated. I think it is something to put off until you know BTS and their music more. Because you take notes, you can make a list of items that you see repeated throughout their MVs and that will help you later if you want to get into the BU. Just to start: Don’t get hung up by the BU in their MVs; Jin is the main character of the BU; and I Need U is the first song and sets up each member’s story.

Bangtan Universe is an experience. It's so dark but soo gooooooooooood. I didn't exactly experience each character went through but it was sooo relatable to what I was going through during those times. Honestly, when I stumbled upon it for the first time I thought it was their real story lol. I remember looking forward to every hints they'll drop even though i know I'll be confused as hell and be amazed by the interpretations smart armys give.

Their palpable relief for that first music show win after 5 years (trainee time and post debut years) of scraping and struggling and barely hanging by a thread financially and being disappointed over and over and being attacked over and over and thinking they were going to have to disband over and over - it was just so intense for them. Of course, it was also the signal to the music industry to increase the intensity and complexity of their attacks on BTS. Nothing they had done so far had stopped BTS and so things got even uglier from there. Rise of Bangtan is great, but it is missing that context of their actual precarious position in the industry and all the attacks they were suffering. You only get the barest tip of the iceberg mentioned in it.

I think everyone did say this was a part of the BU(Bangtan Universe). It's really complex and spans over years of their music videos and comebacks. It also has a webtoon, game, short films, Notes and then a drama is supposed to come out called "Youth". Every time an MV has BU written below, that's what it means.
A simple hint for the song: It was supposed to be "I need you friend" but "I need you girl sounded better in the song + made it more generic to listen to". That's why you might not have gotten it.
The storyline is basically about 7 boys who are friends and somehow a lot of things happen and separate them. This song mostly talks about the beauty of their friendship and how without each other, they lose their selves. Kinda in this direction.
P.S. That song Moving On makes me emotional everytime! T^T Thr lyrics are quite personal. You guys should react to it if you can.

In every video where you are being introduced to a new album I also add my recommendations so here are the ones for HYYH pt.1:
"I Need U", mostly for the storyline, the song lyrics do not really correlate with what is going on in the mv and then for b-sides, I will say "Moving On", "Intro: The Most beautiful Moment in Life'' & ''Boyz with Fun"
thank you for your reactions as always!

The ages 19-24 that they were talking about were the bts members' ages :)
They say their age in korean age, so their real international ages here were 17-23.
In Korea you are 1y/o when you are born, and then you also turn another year after the new year, so when they say their ages they're actually 1-2 years younger in international age.

Yes, V kill's his dad in the storyline. All of them have traumatic events in the story.
But when they are together they avoid each other to make bad decisions.
It's very intersting and good. It's a fanatasy story about traveling in time and avoiding disasters but with consequences like the butterfly effect and other things.

When you guys react to I Need U (whenever you get a chance) just note that there are 2 versions of the MV. But the one to watch is the original version. The BU comprises of three 'arcs' - HYYH (The Most Beautiful Moment In Life), Wings and Love Yourself which I see as 'struggles of youth', 'maturity and temptations' and 'self love/acceptance'

  • @EmmieUniverse
    @EmmieUniverse 10 месяцев назад

I need u is the first MV of the BU (Bangtan Universe), a fictional story line through songs, mv's and many many other platforms (letters, games, webtoons etc).
It's really deep so I won't go into it in this reaction. Songs/MV's go really deep when it comes to BTS, at the surface you think this song is about a girl and that the boys are sad about a relationship, but that's not even close to what it actually means. Firstly, the song isn't about girls at all, it is about young friendship between the boys. The MV is another story, it's meaning is very deep and as always in their MV's, every scene is on purpose and has a meaning, every item or prop you see has a meaning. It's hard to grasp at first sight, even when seeing it for the 10th time.
The storyline continues through other MV's aswell, you'll see references to this MV and others and to the storyline in general.
In the meanings of their songs and MV's, often a lot more is happening than what you see on the surface. They draw inspiration from psychology, astronomy, biology, politics, movies, books etc. It's so deep it surprises me every time how deep and detailed it all is.
    Borahae! Love your reactions! 💜

bts actually went to court because of those sajaegi accusations made by antis and korean news outlets, they won the court case very easily because all bighit really had to do was show that they could never in a million years afford doing that with the funds they had at the time lol.
The accusations were ridiculous and groundless to begin with, people were just unable to believe that bts, small company idols with no media power, were winning over huge big company idols, it made a lot of people, companies and the media mad..

First, about the ages. Often, in these documentaries and guides, they use the Korean age system. In that system you are age 1 year on your day of birth and age a year on January 1st of each subsequent year. They do not use the birth day itself as a marker of age change. Fir example, V was born on 30th Dec 1995, on that day he was 1, on January 1st 1996 he turned 2. The way you use age in America (and here in UK) on Jan 1st 1996 V would still be considered 2days old.
Welcome to the Bangtan Universe. This fictional universe and story smacked us in the face with the MV for I Need U.

The members' ages ranged from 19-24 according to the Korean system when HYYH Pt1 album was released. I Need U started off the BU as other commenters have mentioned. The story focuses on a variety of issues youth go through including depression, poverty, neglect, low self worth, domestic violence, bullying, etc. The BU is set to be released as a drama series sometime this year so hopefully you will get to react to that. (Though you may need to quickly catch up on the associated songs/MVs before that)

If you dig around online, you can find out what order to watch the BTS UNIVERSE content. Or just ask ARMY. The problem is you also need to have the books, webtoons and mobile game for it to make sense. So I ended up just watching the videos and then watching the XCeleste channel explanation, which is really good. You may want to do more music before doing the BU, I mean BTS are musicians after all!💜

The mv of i need u was the first one from bts universe (BU), a fictional storyline about youth and friendship. There's a lot of content and even some armys is confused about it. People were not kind to bangtan in the early days. they still aren’t but it was brutal back then. This is why ARMYs are so protective. People may mock us. But we know what bangtan have been through and that’s why ARMYs unleash their wrath every time people utter shit. And we are not apologising.

So with chart manipulation, they were accused, but it was later officialy ptoofee they didn't do, why was it oficially proofen bc they had to go to court and show they finances so media would write anymore this things bc as long as you don't proof you are innocent they can talk all they want, bc with korean law it is a little weird, but is like 'you are guilty unless you prove otherwise', so they showed they finances etc, and were officialy not guilty. And rumors stoped. Eh

Love your review. I'm Malaysia ARMY and i'm glad the boys enjoying themself in Kota Kinabalu. This Chapter remind me of their 1st concert EPISODE II. THE RED BULLET in Kuala Lumpur in June 2015. During their early years BTS have strong fan base outside Korea. BTS not so popular in Korea bcoz they are not from the Big 3 company. When they won the award, they were accused of "Sajaegi". They don't have to do that, they have ARMY around the world who love them. That's why ARMY is so protective of BTS bcoz we follow their journey and we know their hardships. You can watch BTS Hardships by xCeleste.

I see that armys already told you that "I Need U" was armys first introduction to the Bangtan Universe so I just wanted to say that the MVs part of the BU and the storyline itself does not necessarily matches whit the song's lyrics.
When I first watched the MV of 'I Need U' I was so confused and surprised even though I already knew beforehand that there was a whole universe. I can only imagine how armys at that time were shocked going into it completely blind.
