  • This week's video sees me out and about in the Scottish Highlands exploring and making images focussed on escape, engagement and joy. I had such a great few hours in a wonderful new location and developed a very spontaneous and playful mindset.
I hope you enjoy the video and will consider supporting our work by buying an e-book, or joining the Expressive Photography Forum.

More and more I see the (zen?) wisdom of just living in the moment and truly being wherever you are, whether you go home with that portfolio shot or not.

100% - I see too many people making themselves miserable with their photography. Too much emphasis on achievement and the only thing of value being a successful end product. A good attitude is far more likely to deliver an interesting image that makes us feel happy with our time in the field. Thank you very much for the kind feedback

I too found you from Thomas Heaton's video. As a new photographer, I really relate to your philosophy.
I find so much joy every time I pick up my camera, whether walking up my road or traveling somewhere more exotic. There's always something fun to explore and capture.
Thank you for sharing your journey. I look forward to following along.

Thank you so much and I am really pleased tp hear your feedback. Some people make photography learning very difficult, or get too focussed on telling you what to do instead of just guiding. I am very much in the latter camp. Thanks for supporting our work.

Alister, I have followed you for a while. I try to internalise the philosophy that you give us from your office.
But I have to say, actually showing us how to put expressive photography into practice in the field brings it much more to life, for me at least.
I also live in under the Scottish weather. You’ve no idea how helpful it is for me, an amateur with a hobby, to see how to approach photography when it’s raining, overcast, dull, flat light, apparently colourless, and when the only daytime opportunity to make photos is around noon.
The images you made under these conditions are absolutely beautiful. I aspire to be able to do the same one day.
Please, when you get to Lewis, give us more of this type of video…show us expressive photography in practice, especially when the light and the conditions are less than favourable.
Thank you for all of your generous help. Colin.

Thank you for the wonderful feedback. I suddenly realised that I missed being out, and you’re right, theory is all well and good, but practical demonstration is far better. Stay tuned, loads of new content planned. But, off to Canada first!

Not only Expressive Photography but inspiring photography as well! I've noticed myself so many times that when conditions are "blah" and the landscapes just seem uninspiring, a turn to more intimate/abstract photography saves the day. Thanks for the reminder!

So well said Alistair. Most people have commitments or quite simply dont want to get up before the crack of dawn (too often anyway). I for one have diversifed away from the Grand Vistas unless a blatent opportunity opens up before me. I have taken great pleasure in trying to capture Dartmoor Hill Ponies recently (sometimes in the teaming rain). It may sound a simple task and a cop out but to do it well is a skill in itself, they are always heads down eating and most uncooperative when it comes to posing! Good luck to you both with the move.

Hi, just watched your video with Thomas & this one successively. It is Monday & I just wanna go out with my very newly acquired camera, second body after almost 15 years. Am not yet a profi, but a very serious follower/practitioner of this art form. I develop lots of ideas from watching & listening to photographers like you, observing their shots posted in instagram.
Thanks for taking a certain angle of presentation to which I can relate. I used to shoot wildlife. Ironically, after investing quite a huge sum on a very fast 70-200 I stopped somehow shooting wildlife & landscape took centre stage. However, I crave also to shoot cityscapes and people. Just like enjoying the wind, smell, noise of nature while doing a pre-shoot observation, I find it fascinating to observe people in places like airports, stations. Sorry for the long text. Wish you a lovely Monday, without the blues!

Yes I agree, of course it is nice when people like our work, but I have to get that out my mind. It is. Ore important to me that I enjoy the process, can escape for a while in nature and make an image that brings me pleasure, or joy. We get lost in the noise of external validation and it can suffocate our true voice - thanks for watching and I very much appreciate your feedback

This Xpan ratio became a drug for me. tt gives me the possibility to bring a sensation of wide space into a local area where there is no vide view. Nice to see you in the field showing how expressive photography works: be free, enjoy the present and create image with what you have at the moment. The second pictures with the peeble gorgeous. See you mate.

Very nice tutorial Alister. It called my attention when you said that you "cooled your white balance a bit"; I always assumed that you shot in WB - Auto. When you adjust the WB exposure, do you play with the actual degrees of temperature? Or do you use presets like daylight, cloudy, etc? Thank you!
