This is the most complete, thoughtful and accurate documentary on disco I’ve ever seen. Nothing is missing including the importance of the Sound of Philadelphia. I lived it, loved it, and sometimes hated it. I also played it as a DJ and understood its importance as a gay man.
Actually, both Gloria Gaynor and Sylvester have also been referred to as the Queen of Disco… look it up. Ironically, Donna ran from that title because she wanted to sing other types of music. Sylvester, being openly gay and vainglorious flamboyant, embraced the moniker, and often referred to himself as the Queen of Disco.
@Darhyl Lacy Definitely. Unfortunately, music and the arts have been placed on the background. It's not viewed as important anymore. Music is viewed as disposable.
Hi there! I just I want to thank who ever watches this that I thank you very much for visiting and that I am glad that this video is being viewed more now. Dennis Jacks No idea! The only one that can remove comments is me and I have not remove anything, actually I don't even have a clue of what comments you're talking about.
I'd like to add a few deserving names to the list of once fabulous names in Disco: Jackie Moore, Claudja Barry, Patrice Russen, Debbie Jacobs, Cheryl Lynn, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Bonnie Pointer, Tina Marie (RIP) and Anita Ward - just to name a few.
An interesting documentary, and yes, why the heck is Madonna included here. As for our Queen, Donna Summer, she never went on the gospel tour circuit, and for that matter she never recorded a gospel album (she did a few one tracks here and there). As for her concerts, Donna's hits (save for Love to Love You, Baby) were always the focus of her concerts, and after 2003, Love To Love You, Baby was back on the set list. One of her greatest moments came in 1998 when she headlined one of the last major benefits for the Gay Mens Health Crisis at Carnegie Hall. I was there, and it was a night to remember.

I'm not particularly into disco but I enjoyed this documentary. I especially liked the attitude portrayed by Sylvester and Grace who did things their way.
What's funny in light of disco's inflated rep for sucking is that really it's what hot atm, and has been for some time now. Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, N*E*R*D, some Bruno Mars even... It all has that late '70s/early '80s disco-funk sound. Hell, Daft Punk's last record had Nile Rogers playing on the hit single, and another track about and _named_ Giorgio Morodor. Also Michael Jackson and Prince are each enjoying yet another of their regular popularity surges. Their early, dance-funk records sound so current today. Even Gaga has a sort of disco aesthetic, not that she does much of anything with it imo.
Gosh, poor Donna Summer... I knew she ended up regretting her dance music career-- and always resented the fact that we live in a fashion that is so conducive to such unnecessary guilt-- but I never knew she'd attempted suicide! I wish so much that I lived in NYC in the 1970s. So much was going on, and my favourite city was one place where it was all happening. My first love is punk, but all kinds of artistic and political and societal tumult was going on at the time, it must have been so exciting to have been around it.
Whitney Houston was on many disco records In the 70s as a background singer. with help of her mom Cissy and The Michael Zagar band, Whitney was on a few of his albums as a background track. Chaka Khan to me wasn't a Disco artist, she was a R&B artist that made dance records.
First Madonna was not famous in the 70s second Chaka Khan was more funk third Sylvester and Gloria Gaynor only had a few hits and grace jones had like 2 hits and last Donna summer is the true queen of disco and should be at the front of the list in this documentary
The Beeb: the gold standard of documentaries, be it Plato or disco. Can you imagine PBS having the cujones to include Sylvester among the "queens of disco"?
At the end of the day, the endless beat and rhythm brought us in a transition unparalleled by anything else. Would that be disco, rock, reggae, hip hop, house, electronic, new wave .... they all enable us to escape in another dimension: freedom of the soul!
Enjoyable program, but I agree with many of the other commenters that Madonna does not really belong here (although I love "Vogue"). I would have likely included Diana Ross instead.
As Grace Jones said in the last line of the documentary, “the world changes, but the dance goes on.” Madonna may not be a “Disco” Queen, but she is most certainly a Dancing Queen. She is the bridge between Disco to Dance music, with 50 #1 hits on the Billboard Dance charts.

This doc focused too much on 'Popular' radio disco women. The Queens of Disco were the ones who produced songs like Shame (Evelyn 'Champagne' King), Come to Me (France Joli) and Donna Summer (Mac Arthur's Park Suite).
