100 pursuits over a 2 year period, and not a single one was caught. This was the reality of a single police agency who was plagued by skilled drivers using Subaru’s unassuming but razor sharp tool known as the World Rally Experimental or WRX.

@@NerdTouchingGrass Well, different roads in different places. The Hellcat excels on wide American expressways, while the WRX will always conquer on twisty tight mountain roads. Ultimately it's like comparing a surgical scalpel to an axe, you wouldn't chop wood with a scalpel and you aren't going to do surgery with an axe. Personal preference from there, personally I've always preferred the WRX but they are different cars for different environments.

The only problem is that people still believe the eastern lie of american cars not being able to handle. The next time Daigo drifts a hellcat or camaro all the jdm dik riders will claim they "always liked american cars". Only the real car guys know the real ones from fake ones.

It's insane how people blame a CAR for people doing armed robbers and being reckless, its an inanimate object, its not the car's idea to go out and commit crimes, its the person behind the wheel. I wish they would have done that to the impala line up from chevorlet or the Malibu line up. Both had lots of potential to become street monsters. The engine bays could have up to an inline 6 sized engine or a v8 for the impalas. The exaust tunnel could have easily had a rwd system in the impala and the malibu could share a similar configuration to a wrx. and they look like normal cars. But I’ve seen some builds that look insane with them. Wasted potential from the early 2000s. For the 04 impala they could literally swap in a manual Camaro rear end and trans front my the 80s and still keep the 3.8l v6 if they wanted to. Chevy really didn’t like that kind of car

I mean even for modifications though they are dirt cheap. Mid 2000s impalas and Malibus had solid engine and when pared with transmissions from junk yards and a couple grand in parts they could be pushing past 300 hp more than most low end sports cars. Compared to modern cars lol. they could make about the same for less Chevy didn’t care that much he thought.

Real talk, my mate was one of the guys that were doing ATMs and Smash N Grabs with these WRXs here in the inner city of Sydney. He ended up being shot by the police in a stolen WRX after doing a Ram Raid. The officer was charged with 4 charges, but wasn't convicted, if I remember correctly. The entire reason why NSW police bought the WRX police car was because of his crew. It was a great time growing up in Sydney back then. There were hotties (stolen or "hot" cars) in the area all the time. WRXs, RS Turbos, GTRs, Porsches, you name it. What's left unsaid in this story, is that it was all because of how hard heroin Sydney. The Viet boys in Cabramatta were making millions, and every inner city crim was out there terrorising the city. It never stopped in the early GC8 Ram Raid days though. They ended up moving on to Armaguards. My cousin got arrested in a $6 million dollar armed robbery. Sydney was off tap back then.

@@endjfcar Honestly, most of them are doing long sentences in jail these days. Sydney had a massive crime wave back then. Some of them were “good kids” that got dragged into it by a worse group, but most were already petty criminals that got much worse once they were addicted. Google “Sydney Armaguard $6 million” and you’ll see what they ended up doing. My cousin was arrested in the sweep they did, but everyone beat the charges. The crew ended up getting arrested one by one for other charges. The cops weren’t going to let it slide.

I read through a lot of the build threads there where people were building the normal impreza into what they call an RSTI. I slowly built mine to look like a version 1 STI clone but never had the money to actually swap it. Set it up for autocross and it did that surprisingly good. Got it with 93k miles and sold it due to it rusting out floorboards at 290k.

I bought a WRX in 2017 to see if Subarus were even worth a shit. It was a $27,000 base model. I bought this because I wasn't even sure if the STI was worth the money. At the time I believe they were around $40,000. One of my regrets in life is that I didn't just buy the STI. I live where it snows heavy occasionally. One day, just to see if the WRX was actually a rally car, I drove the car down a dirt road that runs parallel with the freeway. I had ws80 blizzaks on the car at the time, and it had recently snowed- so there was snow covering mud. This was a graded and Flat Road, but the traction was awful for any car. I sat in the dirt and waited for a car to pass me that was on the freeway. I dumped the clutch and let her rip, and I was seriously going 60 to 70 in mud and snow and passing cars on the freeway like they were standing still. It blew my mind.

4:59 That’s sonic blue mica, my friend!
My bro had a ‘97 WRX STi Type R in sonic blue. It was VERY fast between 100 and 160 kph, where you’d do most of your passing. We once followed the world rally guys around between stages, it was a blast. We got up to the end of the dial at 180 but I don’t know how fast we actually got to- the revs weren’t bouncing before the next bend. The Type R had closer to 300 Hp, and stuff like adjustable F/R torque, engine bay strut, intercooler, lighter weight and 2 doors.
I particularly liked the bucket seats and the car felt super safe (in spite of the doors being very thin compared to modern cars) because of how stable and firm it was. To me, hard suspension is safe suspension. An amazing car.
Also, the ram raiders loved WRXs because you could smash through the front of a shop and the car could take it and kept driving… like a proper rally car. It also was more than a match for the police Holdens or Fords if you were a decent driver.

One thing that stood out to me was the comment regarding how Subaru didn’t have an immobilized; thereby, making them easy to steel. I thought Hyundai and Kia were the only company that failed to address this.

This just popped up on my feed. Subscribed! After almost three years of coveting a Rex. I got mine in December 1997. Shortly after was when all the ramraiding stuff was hitting the news in Perth. I didn't have a lock up garage, so there were a few stressful months. That car was my faithful daily for the next 24 years

There was no 3500cc class in Group A for the World Rally Championship. That class was only available for the Group A Touring cars. Wrold rally cars were all less than or equal to 1999cc with turbos plus restrictors. Furthermore, the car was not 30kg overweight, that was the safari spec with the heavier bashguards and spare wheels. FIA isn't allowed to disclose the weightbridge weights at any rally unless there is an underweight rule breached (to prevent teams or the public from calculating how heavy the driver and navigator are).

I daily drive a 1997 Tommy kaira M20b wagon, TK0747, based on the Subaru WRX.
One of only 105 made between 1993 and 2000: The rarest GF8 in the world.
It leaves an STi in the dust.
And it is one of the greatest cars ever made. Period.
