The most thought-out and understandable explanation I have seen on this game. I imagine the amount of effort spent on creation of this video. I will actually use your plan to explain rules to my beginner friends. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the video. My friend and I spent forever going over the instructions last night and then when we went to play, it was just too much! It's so much to retain and keep track of; we were basically lost (and kind of brain dead). Despite all of our effort, it almost felt futile. I found watching this very helpful. I've just purchased the game and I've already watched your video several times ! Keep on doing these amazing videos!!! Thanks!
Wow, super lucky good find! I have seen unopened copies going on Ebay for $300! Enjoy the game and hope to find the 1st big box expansion with the wounds and sanity damage cards, that really adds a lot to the game!
I still come back to this for a refresher when I haven't played in a while. Also, "refresh phase" is so hard to say consistently. Thanks for a great video.
Played this game for the first time 5 years ago. The friend who owned the game moved away and I hadn't played it since then until a week ago when I saw it in a store and decided to buy it. After setting it up and going through everything for about an hour I realized I really relied on my friend a lot when we used to play this game and I was super confused about how to actually proceed with the game. Thanks for the in-depth video.
My friend lent me the game a few weeks back, we tried reading through the rules but got lost and stopped. This video, although long, is really useful. I feel like I can actually play through to the end...although the end may come quickly to start with. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, it's much appreciated. Soooo much to remember though.
The awesome thing is the more you play the more second nature it becomes, the thematic aspects start to jive with the rules and it gets a lot easier. Then you start adding expansions.... but that is half the fun!
25 minutes in.. this is absurdly well explained.. kudos Definitely going to watch the entire series for this game. I own the 2nd edition of the board game, this seems a lot more fun and appears to have more depth to it.
10 years after i first played it at friends bday, i finally got the game for myself in very good condition for ~40. Amazing video, now just need to force some friends to sit behind a table with myself for 6hours.
I really appreciate this video tutorial. It's helping me understand how to play this game. I've recently bought it and am looking forward to it. The detail you go into is very helpful. I'm going to have a watch of part 2 now! Keep up the good work, sir.
Excellent comprehensive video. Thinking about playing again and wanted a refresher. The only thing I noticed that was missed was near the 31:00 mark when talking about sealing a gate. After sealing a gate the players get to remove one doom token from the doom track (page 3 for those curious of where it is).
Wow, great catch! I have been wanting to get this back to the table myself. The new Mansions of Madness 2nd edition reminded me that Arkham Horror is still the best HP lovecraft adventure game on the market.
Very clear and concise, and stays on point... really the best explanation of this game I've yet seen. I was able to play the game after watching this video and with an occasional peek at the rulebook. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this video, you're going to save my a**. I run a gamer group and volunteered to learn the rules ahead of time to teach everyone else in a couple of days. I think I would have lost all my sanity checks trying to understand this game with the written rule book only!

@@OffTheShelfGameReviews did a bit of a simplified version (as in, ignored the specifics of the monster... let's say, that we forgot until end game). Other than that it went great.
@@macadance92 sounds great! I need to play this one again, been playing quite a few solo games as of late and need to rotate this one in. Thanks for watching!
One thing, being devoured is not permenant death. You shuffle your investigator amd draw a new one. If you are rendered unconcious you are to immediately choose and discard half (rounded down) of your items and clues along with all retainers and move to St. Marys Hospital. Being devoured however causes the player to discard ALL possessions (except unspent trophies) and shuffles their char. sheet in with the unused sheets. Player then draws a new char. and set it up as done game setup.
+Jeremiah Cripps Correct and probably not clear in the video! Of course add on that being devoured when the old one is awake is quite permanent! Thanks for commenting and watching!
Love the video, love the style. I'm still very noob to this game, and learnt a lot =) Our flat hs a games weekend every second weekend. We've been playing Betrayal: house on the hill. which i Love. but we've almost played out all the haunts and need something new. we picked up this and it's very interesting. Can't wait to use the things I've learnt =)
Great to hear, have fun with it! Nab the Dunwich Horror when you want to add more fun (Don't start with it, wait till you get a dozen plays out of the basic game first)!
I've played non-related Tabletop games with a crew of family members, namely Warhammer 40k. Is a game like this extremely difficult to get the hang of? I appreciate any feed back! 😃
If you played 40K then you understand the "exception based rules" that are the crux of frustration when learning a game. Arkham can be a little frustrating for new players but take it slow and follow along with the turn summary and you will be good! Have fun with it!
No problem have fun with the game ! As a side note if you enjoy it nab the Dunwich Horror next it doubles the number of cards for the base game and adds a good alternative damage system.
Better isn't really a good term to use when comparing these 2 games. Honestly it is which is more thematic and I think Arkham is more matching the horror theme of HP lovecraft. Eldritch has too much of a globe trotting Indiana Jones feel which to me isn't needed in my collection because I own Fortune and Glory. If you really can only buy one of them between Arkham and Eldritch, Eldritch plays slightly quicker, Arkham has more expansions for now. Arkham edges on the theme Eldritch edges on play time.
This 100x over. Thank you for putting it so perfectly. Eldritch is the Indiana Jones of the Lovecraft world, while Arkham is the more true to the classic theme game.
Excellent video! There's quite a lot to this game and you explain it very well. From what I have seen regarding the expansions for AH, they seen to only make the game harder. Is this correct? Also, what other horror themed board games do you recommend? Hope to see more from you about AH!
The great thing about Arkham Horror is that once you play it a few times it starts to play pretty smoothly. The expansions are a mixed bag some add challenge (like the King In Yellow) others add more variety/options (like Dunwich Horror). I would suggest Dunwich as the best first expansion to get since it doubles the amount of encounter cards for the base game adding the most variety out of the gate.I think it gives the best bang for the buck dollar value. For horror games do you like co-operative games only or will any horror game do? I can suggest Carnival Zombie, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Chaos in the old World, Ghost Stories, Last Night On Earth, off the top of my head as good games.
Great tutorial, but you said that if you lose all of your sanity, you also lose any ally you had. I don't see any mention of losing allies in the rulebook.
One question, you mentioned about not having a discard deck, but you mentioned about allies leaving after horrible things happening. Do you not discard that ally card then?
GrumshBGG got it! :) I've started getting the hang of "return to cup" and "return to box" and other remove card thingies (even though I'm still waiting for my copy of the game - watching instructional videos and reading help docs/manuals is fun). Thanks!
I only have one question; If I choose to close the gate with my fight skill, do I still get to use my physical combat cards? feks the tommy gun. We had a discussion the other night on wether you could use them since the other entries specifies "combat checks" and the gate test reads "fight check" ...
Fight or Lore Skill only - it is challenging to close gates! Thanks for watching and sorry for the delayed reply! If it helps a Fight check is not a combat check but a combat check is based on fight skill.
Do the effects of Mythos cards persist when the Great One awakens? For instance we had a Mythos card that forbade to cast spells and the Great One awakened.
Retainers are discussed on Page 16: If an investigator is ever reduced to 0 Stamina while in Arkham, the investigator is knocked unconscious. He must immediately choose and discard half of his items and half of his Clue tokens (rounded down), along with all retainers (if any). I should clarify that with a note. Thanks for watching!
I am trying to remember just the base game without all the expansions and I cannot think if there was a way in the base game to do it. I would have to double check all the cards to be sure though.
I would love to run this system on Cypher System Xp = Clues Every morning 1 to 3 gates spawn rolled via 1d6 - rolling odd numbers opens one closed gate or one less if no gates are closed Sanity = Intelligence Gaining xp = Close gate everyone gets 1xp, find clues you get xp equal amount. you can spend xp -buy level up from spesific locations 4xp -close gate 5xp -buy items 1xp (handgun) -buy small vehicle 2xp (horse) -buy big vehicel 3xp (card) -buy random cyphers 1xp -reroll any die -prevent GM intrusion -buy story alternation, GM decision if it can happen (1xp immined benefit, 2xp short to medium term benefit, 3xp long term benefit.) -hire a hireling who is level equal to your tier and GM gives it random gimmick (at start of the game he is tier 1) (Gimmick can be anything GM wants that might help players) Sanity - Make sanity check lvl 3 or higher, on fail you take sanity dmg when you see any abnormal, magical, miracle or too advanced technology. Sanity 5 you see things Sanity 10 the things can hurt you Gate opens - around the gate spawns something - defeating the enemies or task is required to enter the portal - inside portal is something - when exiting portal you can close the portal with 5xp Else is Cypher System and Arkham Horror combination :D What do you think? ^_^ sounds fun to me hope you liked the idea :D
to summon grate old one you can just roll D20 -> every 3 is one level . . . 20 to 18 is lvl 11, 17 to 15 is lvl 12, 2 to 1 is lvl 17 Cypher System max level (tier 6) can defeat maybe lvl 16 but it will be uphill battle that they will lose :^)

Amarant48 So other question, regarding being deputized, you also get the wagon to drive around. how we interpret moving is you can move wherever you want but have to 'drive' there. so any monster in the path much be dealt with. make sense? or is it like a teleport ha?
Quick question for anyone who could answer it: When you're in the second part of the outer world during the movement phase you get to move out, yeah? With that, are you able to spend your movement points to move from there or is your movement turn consumed by merely exiting the outer world?
+dwsquirtle +Emeal and the Videos Hi! Please check my channel. A have a couple of Arkham Horror walkthroughs and an review of Dunwich Horror expansion elements!
Ok, I wanted to start playing this, but I feel i missed one item: How do you decide your beginning skill points with the sliders? Do you just pick or do you go by something else? You may have explained this, but knowing me, I missed it...
Thanks but I am wondering this. so say I have a zombie from last round and I spawn a cultist this round (1), I place clue token (2) And now it's time to move monsters (3). obviously the zombie moves but what about the cultist? must it wait a turn before it moves? or can it move on the mythos turn it is placed?
It moves (of course assuming it isn't a monster type that never moves). I know you didn't ask but just want to clarify for anyone else reading this so they don't forget that rule.
+GracieFaceFunkyBunch +Emeal and the Videos Hi! Please check my channel. A have a couple of Arkham Horror walkthroughs and an review of Dunwich Horror expansion elements!
+Board Games MD Board Games MD, I am happy to support other channels but please avoid spamming the comments section please. I am deleting the other 8 posts and leaving this one. Thanks for understanding!
FF should just make the board a lot bigger and add spaces for the decks and chips. It would make it easier to play on a round or smallish table. Also, more baggies, please, for fuck's sake?
+Kellen Mitchell Bypass the bags, this game needs a small plano box to save your sanity! I would have agreed with bigger at 1 point but I REALLY like Dunwich Horror which adds another board, and more cards, and more table space!
While you can make that argument about a vast majority of co-operative games, I would say that if you have someone ordering people around at your game table, keep a Taser handy any time they speak up. Failing that tell them to shut the heck up or buy their own copy and play by themselves. Honestly most co-operative games have this potential problem but I am a firm believer it is a person problem not a game problem. In a competitive game you don't let people tell you how to take your turn so why do it in a co-operative game? Thanks for watching!
I'm sorry to say this, but this sounds like this man is reading aloud instead of talking about what he is trying to tell us. The silence that interrupts many of his sentences, while he talks as fast as possible to keep the flow in the video (however, a bit monotone as well) indicates that.

Off The Shelf Board Game Reviews Appreciate it! Take care!
No problem have fun with the game ! As a side note if you enjoy it nab the Dunwich Horror next it doubles the number of cards for the base game and adds a good alternative damage system.
No problem at all!
Thank you so much. This helps clarify a complicated game!
Thanks for watching!
Hey here's a question right so I'm considering buying but I'm also considering Eldritch horror so what I would like to know what is a better game ?
Better isn't really a good term to use when comparing these 2 games. Honestly it is which is more thematic and I think Arkham is more matching the horror theme of HP lovecraft. Eldritch has too much of a globe trotting Indiana Jones feel which to me isn't needed in my collection because I own Fortune and Glory.
If you really can only buy one of them between Arkham and Eldritch, Eldritch plays slightly quicker, Arkham has more expansions for now. Arkham edges on the theme Eldritch edges on play time.
Thanks
No problem, hope I helped!
Thanks for this guide it really helps me to understand better this great game..
Greetings from mexico
Always awesome to hear that! Have fun in Arkham!
thank you for this guide. my friends and i tried on our own, but we didnt manage to learn it :D
language barrier :p
very helpful!
Really glad to hear it helped, thanks for watching!
Great tutorial, but you said that if you lose all of your sanity, you also lose any ally you had. I don't see any mention of losing allies in the rulebook.
That should definitely be "Retainers" not allies. Good catch and thanks for watching!
One question, you mentioned about not having a discard deck, but you mentioned about allies leaving after horrible things happening. Do you not discard that ally card then?
mouthmw They are removed from the game, toss them back into the box. Insert Mccoy quote with a smile!
GrumshBGG got it! :) I've started getting the hang of "return to cup" and "return to box" and other remove card thingies (even though I'm still waiting for my copy of the game - watching instructional videos and reading help docs/manuals is fun). Thanks!
Thanks again, enjoy it when it shows up!
Best Arkham Horror video on the internet! Thank you very much!
Thank you! Plan is to do a followup Dunwich Horror video eventually!
Do the effects of Mythos cards persist when the Great One awakens? For instance we had a Mythos card that forbade to cast spells and the Great One awakened.
92JinKazama Environment and Rumor cards are discarded when the Old One awakens.
GrumshBGG Awesome, thanks for your reply. Great channel, subbed. Waiting for more vids! :)
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
I may have missed it but can you explain how trading between players work?
Chris Duong from my understanding, player can trade as much as they they want (only items they have) when they are in the same location.
Just need to share the same space.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for beating me to it, been away from the channel due to a family emergency!
Much appreciated.
Great video. Thanks so much for all that work
Thanks for watching!
all in 1 take? very good!
It's not easy and I did make a mistake! One day I'll reshoot this one with an expansion thrown in!
Thanks this really helps for me and my friends learning to play this game
Glad to hear it, have fun, and thanks for watching!
What page is it where it says that you lose your allies when you die or go insane?
Retainers are discussed on Page 16:
If an investigator is ever reduced to 0 Stamina while in
Arkham, the investigator is knocked unconscious. He
must immediately choose and discard half of his items
and half of his Clue tokens (rounded down), along with
all retainers (if any).
I should clarify that with a note.
Thanks for watching!
I can't remember if you said this but is there a way to remove a doom token before the ancient awakens?
I am trying to remember just the base game without all the expansions and I cannot think if there was a way in the base game to do it. I would have to double check all the cards to be sure though.
A doom token is removed from the Ancient One's doom track when a player uses an elder sign item to seal a gate.
Oh wow, I had a mental break moment there. Yes Elder Sign cards do indeed remove the Doom Tokens. Nathan is MUCH more awake than me! Thank you.
I would love to run this system on Cypher System
Xp = Clues
Every morning 1 to 3 gates spawn rolled via 1d6 - rolling odd numbers opens one closed gate or one less if no gates are closed
Sanity = Intelligence
Gaining xp = Close gate everyone gets 1xp, find clues you get xp equal amount.
you can spend xp
-buy level up from spesific locations 4xp
-close gate 5xp
-buy items 1xp (handgun)
-buy small vehicle 2xp (horse)
-buy big vehicel 3xp (card)
-buy random cyphers 1xp
-reroll any die
-prevent GM intrusion
-buy story alternation, GM decision if it can happen (1xp immined benefit, 2xp short to medium term benefit, 3xp long term benefit.)
-hire a hireling who is level equal to your tier and GM gives it random gimmick (at start of the game he is tier 1) (Gimmick can be anything GM wants that might help players)
Sanity - Make sanity check lvl 3 or higher, on fail you take sanity dmg when you see any abnormal, magical, miracle or too advanced technology.
Sanity 5 you see things
Sanity 10 the things can hurt you
Gate opens
- around the gate spawns something
- defeating the enemies or task is required to enter the portal
- inside portal is something
- when exiting portal you can close the portal with 5xp
Else is Cypher System and Arkham Horror combination :D
What do you think? ^_^ sounds fun to me
hope you liked the idea :D
to summon grate old one you can just roll D20 -> every 3 is one level . . .
20 to 18 is lvl 11,
17 to 15 is lvl 12,
2 to 1 is lvl 17
Cypher System max level (tier 6) can defeat maybe lvl 16 but it will be uphill battle that they will lose :^)
Could be a fun alternative, how has your plays gone with it?
@@OffTheShelfGameReviews Poor thanks to Covid-19 played few time DnD 5e and once cypher... Every one is avoiding meeting if possible hehe
once Covid is "over" I will come back to cypher ^_^
@@xezzee I think when Covid is over my friends and I are penciling in a marathon weekend or two!
Great video, thanks for posting this.
Thanks for watching!
44:43 For anyone who understands the mechanics but doesn't understand the flow of the game.
Thank you for watching!
Amarant48 So other question, regarding being deputized, you also get the wagon to drive around. how we interpret moving is you can move wherever you want but have to 'drive' there. so any monster in the path much be dealt with. make sense? or is it like a teleport ha?
lol; to wrong person (stupid phone), but oh well.
Quick question for anyone who could answer it: When you're in the second part of the outer world during the movement phase you get to move out, yeah? With that, are you able to spend your movement points to move from there or is your movement turn consumed by merely exiting the outer world?
Consumed with exiting.
So helpful man. Appreciate it.
+Nicholas Turani Really glad to hear it, have fun!
Thanks so much! Very clear instructions!

Ok, I wanted to start playing this, but I feel i missed one item:
How do you decide your beginning skill points with the sliders? Do you just pick or do you go by something else?
You may have explained this, but knowing me, I missed it...
+ryladante Your choice when setting up the game!
Thanks for watching!
I like that... because it can either help you, or hinder you.
Thanks for the feedback, now I can go play it!
Have fun and let us know how it goes!
ryladante There is one investigator who has an infinite amount of skill points all the time.
I played this game with my brother and my uncle when I was 8. And we were all eaten by Cthulu. :(
Simon Sjö He is a very tough Great Old One! It's still worth the stories you remember after he devours everyone!
Thanks for watching.
PS: Love the video :)
GrumshBGG I played as the guy with the Tommy gun.
GrumshBGG pps: It's funny that one of your earliest videos namely lords of waterdeep is a game that I also played with my brother and my uncle
Lords of Waterdeep is another great game that I don't foresee ever leaving the collection!

+t3l3phasicworksh0p I am Grumsh over on boardgamegeek. No need for Geekgold though, thanks for watching!
My rules say nothing about losing your allies when your stamina or sanity is depleted.
If someone can give me a time stamp here it is most definitely RETAINERS not allies. Would love to annotate the video since this gets asked a lot.
Around the 9:10 mark.
Great, thanks ! Annotation added!

Do monsters move if they are placed on the same turn?
Mythos Phase is
1 Open gate and spawn monster
2 Place Clue Tokens
3 Move Monsters
Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
I know you didn't ask but just want to clarify for anyone else reading this so they don't forget that rule.
thanks so much for taking the time to make this video!!!!

what are the dice used for? Thank you very much
Making statistic challenge tests.
Maybe watch the video 🤣
FF should just make the board a lot bigger and add spaces for the decks and chips. It would make it easier to play on a round or smallish table. Also, more baggies, please, for fuck's sake?
+Kellen Mitchell Bypass the bags, this game needs a small plano box to save your sanity!
I would have agreed with bigger at 1 point but I REALLY like Dunwich Horror which adds another board, and more cards, and more table space!
Thank you.
No problem!
thx for this video
Hope it helps you enjoy the game! Thanks for watching!
Much thanks

Who would think this was fun? Wouldn't whoever is the most skilled player just tell everyone else what to do with thier turn and why?
While you can make that argument about a vast majority of co-operative games, I would say that if you have someone ordering people around at your game table, keep a Taser handy any time they speak up. Failing that tell them to shut the heck up or buy their own copy and play by themselves.
Honestly most co-operative games have this potential problem but I am a firm believer it is a person problem not a game problem. In a competitive game you don't let people tell you how to take your turn so why do it in a co-operative game?
Thanks for watching!
Cardboard standups need to go
If you are willing to work on it a little, it's not to hard to amass a collection of replacement miniatures.
I'm sorry to say this, but this sounds like this man is reading aloud instead of talking about what he is trying to tell us. The silence that interrupts many of his sentences, while he talks as fast as possible to keep the flow in the video (however, a bit monotone as well) indicates that.
Well in my defense this was filmed over 2 years ago and I was nervous as hell about screwing anything up. Nowadays I just avoid screwing up... :)
+William Wilting k.
One day I will put up Dunwich Horror and Innsmouth videos.
Doesn't sound like he's reading at all, just talking clearly.
