This is nuts!! I have an extremely similar video coming out tomorrow 😂
Yes! I finally beat you to the punch!
Hehehe took you both long enough to make this 😅
Most excellent. I've been building a minimalist kit for mork borg it all fits in a tiny backpack
No one likes a copycat Bob! Lol. J/K of course. Looking forward to it
Can't wait to watch that one too
I once ran a game on the hiking trail with no books, dice or character sheets. All theater of the mind and I decided what happened during the encounters.
Still had fun.
Cool!
Yeah, I used to do that in boy scouts. We'd have long hikes and we had minimal space in our packs for anything as frivolous as dice or books so we just played full on Theatre of the Mind. It was back in the Moldvay and AD&D days. Even then, I could remember enough of the rules and keep stats and numbers (yes even Thaco!) in my head to actually DM and play fairly accurately. It was my first realization of a lot of what Prof. DM often says about what playing a fun game boils down to.
That's the way we used to do it at my first burger-flipping job, and in the car on road trips, back in the 2nd Edition AD&D era: my first DM did almost everything in theatre-of-the-mind mode.
Back then, there really wasn't any terrain, miniatures, or maps to work with (the metal minis available in that era cost more than we could generally afford, and were sort of a separate painting/collecting hobby for the most part when we could afford them), and we only had one set of dice which only got used for the most important and dramatic encounters (boss battles and the like.)
The DM, having played 1st Edition D&D for years before I joined the group, memorizing the relatively simple rules from that edition, only rarely referred to the game books except for storytelling inspiration, and the character sheets back in those days were pretty minimalist and were only rarely referenced (we were encouraged to write up elaborate character backstories, but that was mostly for the players' benefit, with a verbal summary at "session zero" to give the DM some ideas.) I believe we referred to the player's handbook when we leveled up to make adjustments to the character sheets, but again, it was a relatively simple game system back then, and the DM mainly only bothered with the leveling-up to get some story ideas (such as those henchmen/followers and stronghold benefits that came with certain levels back then.)
After "Session Zero" (we didn't call it that back then, but the basic idea was still the same), we would just give the campaign a session or two as a "shakedown cruise" to figure out who was who, where the story was going, and what we were doing, and that DM could improv a pretty effectively immersive and entertaining game, even while driving.
I'm not sure every DM could run a game while driving, but I think the real bottleneck to modern DMs running these sorts of minimalist games is a fear of the improv involved: I think there's a great deal of comfort for modern DMs in stacks of detailed rule books, complicated stat blocks and charts and tables, and mountains of tactical maps, scenery, miniatures, and so on: the less you have to make up and imagine, the easier it seems, I guess!
I dropped out of gaming for several years and didn't return until the 3rd Edition era, when I started DMing for the first time, and I got pretty wrapped up in the published adventure modules, maps, minis, rulebooks, and so on, and had to stop and teach myself the lost art of improv later on - it was surprisingly hard to learn, given that it should come naturally and had to be un-learned to accommodate modern D&D! But, once I began figuring out improv again, the game got much, much easier, more fluid and quickly-paced, and more fun for everyone involved.
I do this with the kids while walking to school sometimes. We use rock-paper-scissors to determine outcomes though.
If Prof recommended a brand of pencil other than Ticonderoga I'd would have to question his educator credentials. 🏅✏️
Blackwing elevates those credentials.
I highly recommend: General's "Cedar Pointe"
Gotta love Deathbringer's priorities!
I highly suggest everyone add a dry erase board to their dnd kit (especially if it's a minimal kit). I use it for EVERYTHING, tracking HP, initiative, loot and xp (as a player) etc. they're inexpensive, reusable and highly functional. I pulled it out last time I did live D&D and wowed the others at the table.
I can't believe Deathbringer still hasn't gotten his duet with Ginny Di. Tragic.
Context pls
well that's more bare bones then I thought it would be. pretty cool
Less is more.
"I could, but I'm cheap!" you are my spirit animal lol
A small erasable marker board is helpful too. For notes, "map" making, etc; from game to game. (Mainly as a player)😉
I've got a purpose-built erasable board that Paizo used to make somewhere in my stack of stuff, it was magnetic and pre-printed with areas for tracking hitpoints and initiative and stuff like that. I never actually used it for anything, and something that fancy is probably more than anyone really needs with a plain erasable board being much more versatile, but I think a lot of DMs could absolutely use an erasable board of some sort!
For that matte, really, a plain, light-coloured erasable grid and a handful of cheap dry-erase markers could cover a lot of terrain, post-it-note, and pencils and scratch-paper/notebooks territory, for keeping up with temporary notes and the like, and even take care of the need for minis for a really minimalist game! (Back in my day, a couple sheets of graph paper and pens did most of the heavy lifting accomplished today with all the terrain tiles and minis and so on - a dry-erase grid would have been great for that sort of thing!)
For sure. We tend to use a large plastic covered map (I believe it's from Paizo) that our DM will draw terrain and maps on. It helps a great deal when we need to see what we're doing.
Solid video Processor! Forgot how much I love those mini UDT’s.
Ziploc bags are how I sort and store so many things. My GM travel set. My crafting supplies. My positively obscene LEGO collection.
First time at GenCon and I've been playing RPG for 40+ years. So excited
I’ve been running at GenCon just since 2018. I still bring too much stuff 😆😆
Got to see Prof DM last night!
Good on you! Unfortunately my first will be 2024
A suppository scene!!?? Dam you do run a gritty game! ;)
I can store my entire character and player "miniatures" collection inside a credit card wallet using a combination of DIY printed and the Arcknight Flat Plastic Miniatures. The credit card organizer makes it extremely fast to locate the right "miniatures" on the fly. Your idea about using a ROOM difficultly number for "everything" in that room is a godsend and has saved me from going crazy trying to look things up if I forget to write down something for that part of the game. THANK YOU for that.
Death Bringer having a crush on Ginny Di is the best lore addition lol
This is great, Professor! RPGs were here before the rise of electronics, and they will be there long after electronics are gone.
Thanks for commenting. New Caves of Carnage next week.
Great advice! Hey PDM- would you please do a video on the “mindset” of designing games for conventions versus your home games? What do you do differently?
I think I’ve done stuff like that on Patreon. The biggest difference is it’s easier to run at cons. Everyone comes on time & is focussed on the game-because they are paying customers!
I really dig your transition to indie goodness. Woot woot! Minimalist kit to boot? Channel's never been better. I very much subscribe to minimal kits (and this channel). Have a great day!
Thanks for your longtime support. This was a favorite video to make and it BOMBED in views. But I make them for the hard-core fans like you, Jay. GenCon was great, but not as good as if you had been there.
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Aww, shucks. Next year we're planning on attending
Love a minimilist game. I run over 85% of my games as TotM, and I can run a game with a notebook of ides and some dice. I also have a GM screen I like that has some of the D&D rules I have trouble with. But it's mostly to hide my notebook from my players. I use a dice tray - my daughter bought a wooden craft box at dollorama and painted it. Its my favorite accessory, and pull it out for every game even if it isn't required. I love your videos for these top-down ideas to simplify the game and make it easier to run that still keeps it fun. Thank you.
Another great video! I always love seeing how GMs I look up to organize themselves, it's a great source of ideas as I continue to perfect my own kit!
Thank you!
Less clutter to get in the way of gaming. Either with physical books or online apps. The way of the master gamer.
That sounds like a great panel.
I'll be on the lookout for you this weekend! Thanks for all the inspiration!
I have a similar setup for my traveling DM Kit, but it currently fits in a standard bankers box to accommodate bigger minis and tiles. Your video has given me more ideas to better streamline and condense my kit professor, thanks.
ziplock bags are the BEST for dice storage. Organize, oversee, overcome (random motto inspiration lol). Hope to get to see you on Gencon, Professor ^^
😆😆Semper Fi
Very light indeed. A leather strap to bind the large UDT to the briefcase would look awesome
Thanks for the video and showing that not much is needed to have fun. Between DnD Beyond, Roll20, digital maps, miniatures and all the "modern DnD things", I do miss a minimal theatre of the mind session.
Amazing how many famous YT were present ❤
I know!! I am grateful for their support.
I love a minimalist approach to gaming. I play with a similar style at my house.
It was a pleasure running into you at the huckster's hall at Gen Con Professor. I have to say your "Deathbringer Dice" really made a great impact at my gaming table.
Cool! Pleasure meeting you!
All these videos are making me so excited for this weekend! Can't wait to see y'all at GenCon!
Swing by any evening at Ballroom 4 in the JW Marriott. I’ll be running something 😁
The attache case is making me imagine prof DM organizing his inventory like Leon in RE4. Its even sorta gridded...
"What're ya sellin?"
Nice kit there prof! That briefcase needs a nice big DEATHBRINGER logo sticker on it so people know what's coming for them!
Hope you have a safe and fun trip to Gencon. As usual, thanks for the DM advice!
Great overview of your stuff for Gencon. I wish you would do a part 2 where you show the setup on a setup.
Good idea.
Your minimalist kit had me at ibuprofen. And, yes, Ticonderoga makes the best pencils, and they smell nice.
Even a strong opinion about pencils! Reminds me of a Henry David Thoreau quote. You know the one.
I run Troika. The system wasn't designed with minis in mind (spells and distance weapons don't have effective ranges, the rules say if you're in initiative it's safe to assume you can make it to an enemy and attack them in a single turn) so I just carry dice, initiative trackers, extra character sheets, and the quick reference guide. I know minis are cool, but I like to be as light as possible.
Have a great time at GenCon. Hope you do a video afterwards telling us how things went.
😊😊😊😊
Heya Prof. I'm Floyd from Games Plus, who waved you over to our booth today. Thanks for stopping by.
Welcome!
Professor, I don’t actually play dnd (I play my own version of HeroQuest and Frostgrave) but your videos are always so helpful. Bravo! 👏
Fantastic. When I go camping I usually bring a deck of runehammer cards, a paizo gridded map (and a dry erase marker), dice, a few tokens for the characters and monsters, and index cards for the character sheets. (you never know when someone gets curious about D&D! and D&D in the woods by a fire is AWESOME)
I got that beat; my rig is a simple pane of beveled tempered heavy glass; you can use fine tipped erasable white board markers and write on top of anything you slide under the glass (I.e. printed pdf maps); I also made glass tokens by glueing card stock printed images with mod podge. I show examples on my channel. Less than 100 dollars for that whole setup. I just don't have a case to carry the glass in but it could be made.
Great video! Travel lite, heavy on the good times.
Thank you Professor! What an awesome video. I know as an fairly new DM I always appreciate DM tips like this. I have made several udt pieces and I store them behind a slightly larger viking shield that I made like udt pizza disks.🤟🏻
Its always good to see what others have as their kit. Nice idea to use the Harbor Freight case.
I'm loving the Deathbringer outros
@Prof DM : Have a safe trip, enjoy yourself ...and bring back some cool stuff to show us.
I subscribe to both, I enjoy minimilistic approaches to TTRPGs, we used to play on the school bus with only dice that were made with pencils and our notepads. However, I also enjoy extremely technical and rulebook heavy games. When traveling to a Con, however, the lighter the better, IMO.
I love gm kit videos so much
Excellent video and excellent advice!
“I could. But I’m cheap.” My spirit animal.
Deathbringer does have a valid point about Ginny D. And yes, I WANT TO HEAR HIM SING WITH HER! LOL!!!
Amazing as always, this video is packed with some of the best tips out there to play any RPG anywhere people would feel like they are down for it. Will surely give it a try when I can assemble all the pieces
Love all your contents, hope perhaps we can see a glimpse of this minimalist DM toolkit in action in some video soon?
Thank you for your video. Enjoy the weekend
Great taste in pens. Love Energels.
Love your work mate.
I am useing Arcknight flat plastic minis because they look cool, and I can store them in a Mini American Cards Folder. In the Futur I will try to use self made paper minis
Nicely done.
Hey, I bet that the Prof, Ben, Baron, and Ginny could make a fine quartet.
That supply case is the best! Had essentially the same one for years. Nice.
Great Stuff.
Good Luck at Gen Con!
Have a great time! Wish I was going to be there!
I'm currently watching this video at GenCon, and somehow missed the fact that you are running some events. Have to confess, i'm pretty sad that I wasn't able to participate in those. I'll be wearing my Deathbringer shirt on saturday for sure! Hope I happen to run into you.
I love your kit! I've been told (especially by my husband and my youngest daughter ) that I bring too much for our game. Going to downsize my kit too. Thanks, Professor!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Thanks for the video! Safe trip! Have Fun!
if you put straps on the back of the 20" UDT , you could use it as a buckler
Things to think about for a traveling DM.
So clever!
Thank you!
i need a briefcase like that!
Harbor Freight tools. I'll put that in the doobly-do.
Great video professor! This is the stuff!
Much appreciated!
This was very cool!
You're videos always make me not just want to play but run ttrpgs. Have a good time a gencon.
typically great content
thank you
Sweet! I hope to run into at GenCon!
That is some DM goals right there!
USA Gold are the pencils I think are the best. ~Brian.
oh and have fun at gen con !! 😁
I’m running Dungeon Crawl Classics at Dragoncon next month and am slowly reducing the amount of stuff I bring. Not down to your level yet but love the inspiration.
Right now I carry all my stuff in a 12 galon cardboard box, but I provide almost everything and we play in person, models, books, 3x2foot maps, etc.
So will the mighty deathbringer do there own pin up calendar? Ginny Di needs some real competition! Also have fun at gencon!
I can't get past the ibuprofen.
Well, not true, I got past and then got stuck again at "but I'm cheap"
Great tour. And includes tableplay guidance.
Have a great time!
Have fun, PDM!
cut larger one in two and hold together with tape of light metal piano hinge on underside
Fret not Deathbringer, I too am anxiously awaiting the day Dungeon Masterpiece releases his Pin-up calendar. Word on the street is it’ll drop any day now.
it's nice to see Deathbringer enjoying pinups 💜💜😅
I got the same deathbringer dice for my table omg!
Ibuprofen is no joke! It's a must-have, for sure.
good luck and have fun! oh live stream from the con!
Awesome!
This is great, I love the simplicity of it. Is there somewhere we can get the slim downed Deathbringer character sheets? I love that format.
Nice briefcase. I really need to make some smaller versions of UDT. And we know Deathbringer sings. When are we getting the Deathbringer pinup calendar?
I laughed at "Ibuprofen". I just find that so funny.
I've got one of those contractor clipboards with storage inside, between that and a bag of dice that's often all I use (especially if I'm running the game away from home).
Have you given flat minis a shot? Very light and space efficient
Professor! I can't find the trailer of "The Reviled Society" on your youtube channel. What I'm looking for the footage with the intense accordion style music. If it's been moved to Patreon I humbly request a posting it here. To be honest 1 video that has your old full intro and all your "scenic" model footage would be awesome. I wanted to share with friends and was thinking of doing some pictures of my own.
Yeah, hands down, you're one of the best DMs out there putting up videos. Minimalist, no bells, whistles, just play your character, roll dice and kill or be killed. Can't stand a lot of what the Mercer Effect has put on expectations for the game. The current and future renditions of the game fundamentally go against what the game is and how it's supposed to be played.
lightweight rpg the way to go
Carrying a tablet in your DM kit is the way to go. A tablet can hold ALLOT of books
That's what's great about the Professor's main philosophy on this channel: You don't need tons of books/rules to play great D&D
@@elishmuel1976 - I used to be a "the more rules, minis, maps, tiles, and pages of character sheet, the better!" kinda guy, but I'm reformed these days, and really, REALLY appreciate this minimalist philosophy: I've still got closets, chests, and boxes full of stuff I really need to start getting rid of, just because I just don't have room for it all anymore, and I'm beginning to really resent all that gaming baggage.
@@elishmuel1976
I like to read books, because I get ideas that way. My games are streamlined before I get to the table. The main rule at my table is Roll for if.
I use Plot Points in my games allot. I give my players one at the beginning of each session, but only allow one at a time. If they use one, they have the ability to earn one back by roleplaying well.
Basically, I have a yes and no but type of D20. When a player wants to do something off of the rails, I tell them to use an plot point, and let them role for it.
Having access to your library is never a bad thing though
