I saw Steve's video about 2.5 years ago when I started learning Russian. It's funny how now I can hear the accent and I couldn't before. It was cool to see you in the same video.
Using LingQ with Russian with Max is probably the thing that is helping me the most to learn Russian. Of course I am very influenced by Steve and his views on language. Thank you for everything you two.
how did you go about using LingQ with Max’s content? did you import podcasts to it?
Perfect example of how well natural language learning results. Steve speaks fluently. He almost doesn't search for vocabulary and grammar while speaking. All this after having one hour a day inut (listening and reading) for about 5 years and almost no grammar. Choosing content that is really interesting to the learner is very important to stay motivated and sustain consistency for a long time. Well balanced learning process. Bravo!

i wouldn’t say fluent, he does a lot of really basic grammar mistakes, русскИЙ литература, русскИЙ культура, also keeps messing up все и всё, все славянские языки, а не всё...

@@SalahNeuer Russian is too difficult to learn just for the sake of it, one need a more serious reason imo for such an effort, that's why I "gave up", I just learn and listen for fun without taking it too seriously

I’m delighted to find this outstanding interview. I started to study the Russian language in April and my current routine is 30 minutes of watching Russian with Max, a morning 30 minute italki lesson, and 30 minutes learning vocabulary and grammar. I also use LingQ with Italian and I’ve just started to use lingQ for Russian. As well as learning Russian and Italian I’m training Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. During lockdown I had to close my martial arts school so I used the extra time to study langurs and I became a huge fan of Mr Kaufman and his extraordinary work. Now I’m coaching full time again I’ve created a new routine and I love the process of learning and practicing languages. Thank you 😃

I will use this channel when I resume my Russian learning. I started about three years ago but quit because I couldn't manage it time-wise. I'm not giving up and will soon dive back into it.

Но лично я нахожу что это очень полезно читать статьи по русский и перевести слова которые я не знаю. Таком случае с выучу многие слова быстро и вижу в то же время слова которые я только что изучал)))
I studied Russian in school. I am fluent in Lithuanian(my mother tongue), English and I am learning French. The thing is I understood nearly everything in this video but I always have trouble speaking in Russian. So I think I am way beyond something like Duolingo Russian, how should I proceed in improving my Russian? My goal is exactly same as Steve's - I would love to read Dostoevsky and Tolstoy in Russian! Please give me any tips, will be greatly appreciated.

Последнее время отовсюду слышу советы учить язык, не сосредоточившись на грамматике. Вот и он, коммуникативный подход во всей красе!))) Формирование коммуникативной компетенции в приоритете над грамматической.
И ведь так и есть... Вот классический пример - маленькие дети учат язык методом проб и ошибок и никогда не боятся его использовать с самого начала и корректировать свои знания, исправляться.. И даже на минимальном уровне они умеют общаться, достигать своих целей, используя изучаемый язык. А среди взрослых полно тех, кто всё знают, а двух слов в реальной ситуации общения связать не могут.
"Люди меня понимают" - вот она, первостепенная цель! 😀

Я себя еще помню, как в детстве научился спрягать слова, не зная грамматики. Хотя я и сейчас ее не знаю)
@@atheroot вот-вот! Мы же в русском грамматику как-то учить только в школе начинаем... и потом благополучно забываем 😀 Представляете, что было бы, если б мы до этого момента языком не пользовались и не говорили 😄
только дети тратят на такое десять и более лет, а с грамматикой и тд можно освоить язык за год, причем те же дети по системе гораздо быстрее учат
I've learned Spanish in school and through work, but for Russian I feel called to learn it, the language itself is my motivation.
For me German language seems to be more difficult than Russian, in spite of the fact that Russian is considered to be on the 4th level of difficulty and German on the 2nd level(so, official is easier)and moreover German is much closer to English but however...All this, maybe because I listened much much more Russian than German. Therefore, I can draw the conclusion that there are no complicated or easy languages in this world, no matter what lang we talk about; I'd rather say that there are known and unknown languages for each of us, languages in which we have or do not have experience and that's all :) An interesting dialog and so motivating, keep up the good work!

This one caught me off guard 😳
I don't quite agree with Steve Kaufmann about the comment he made about your channel Max. He said if he had just started learning Russian, he would choose to watch your podcasts. I think your podcasts are suitable for beginners as well as for intermediate and advance students. You just have to look up your speaking Russian level podcasts and you'll find them so interesting, educative and worthwhile to watch at all levels. You have to understand that Steve is American and in the American culture people are in a way that you have to know them closely to understand that they are not just great but humble and polite people in deed.
Уровень русского Стива неплохо . Удивительно что он может говорит так же на ?15 языков . It seems that discipline is when motivation becomes a habit. Both require that you derive some enjoyment but maybe discipline is less likely to fade than motivation.

Я вообще слушаю всё, что говорит Стив, даже если он говорит на языке, которого я совершенно не понимаю. Правда, не до конца. Поскольку не понимаю.
А всё, что он говорил на английском, немецком, русском или украинском, я переслушал. Многие ролики - по многу раз.
Это помогает мне улучшить восприятие английского на слух.
Он часто повторяется, в хорошем смысле этого слова, а это для совершенствования языка незаменимо..
Я не слушаю Эхо Москвы, но смотрю канал вДудь, что тоже очень интернсный

what it found weird. And it is not first time when I see foreigner speaking some other language (which is all nice I like that part), is that the impression is that all is a joke regardless of the topic one speaks (serious or not), is the cultural/emotional part is off.
Another thing: I remember how it was when I was student, new foreign students could speak almost perfect russian in 1 year (way better than was presented here). As full time involvement. as part of education process, learning couple of other subjects other than the language itself. They do learn rules and grammar

That's why we do dialogues (where other people speak) in the membership program and sometimes interviews in the podcast.

really? I often find understanding non natives much easier, in any language. they use much easier vocab and speak slower.
I understood Steve, but to be fair, he has a very strong accent and does many mistakes, which makes him hard to understand if you aren’t already fluent. It’s always easier to understand someone who speaks slowly in the standard form of the language when you are just learning than it is to understand people with non standard accent or foreigners with thick accents.
Imagine you were learning English. Max would be like hearing someone with a BBC accent speaking with someone who has a thick Japanese accent. It would be hard if you didn’t speak English well. But even if he were speaking with someone with a strong Cockney accent, a learner would have just as much difficult

To say "Im learning x language", is it better to say "я учутся x язык" или "я изучутся x язык " ?

You can say: Я учу русский язык. или Я изучаю русский язык(Word изучаю may be more formal, like learning as a science). Words учутся and изучутся is a wrong :))). Я учу. Он (она) учит. Они учат. Я изучаю. Он изучает. Они изучают.

Я учусь means that e.g I am not working or I am not doing somesing else.
You can say Я изучаю русский язык, я учу русский язык. And that means I learn
But я учу is ambigious. It may be I learn and I teach.
In English, there are a lot of ambigious verbs as well.
The word учутся is totally wrong. It can be учатся, учат, учу, учит, учится but never - учутся

Another comment: I found this video where Steve talks about shadowing: ruclips.net/video/3IvByB_NWQc/видео.html. Steve loves input by podcasts and reading and mainly likes to speak when it is meaningful. I would say he is a great example of someone who adheres to Steve Krashen input theory, but I like how Kaufman points out that we are all different, and you have to find out what works best for you.

To be honest, I hear a lot of AMERICANS saying this, as well. Very hipster, I suppose, to use another language to tell someone when you've had enough.
Im french, "basta" is very common but not really rude, it's more something you say to your friends when you're done with some annoying stuff and want to move on

Блин, Стив довольно неплохо говорит по-русски. Особенно для человека, который начал учить такой трудный язык в таком зрелом возрасте.
А Макс, видать, настолько привык адаптировать свою речь для иностранцев, что прямо чувствуется, как неестественно он звучит для носителя языка. Ощущение, будто у Стива эмоции на русском языке выглядят даже более естественнее, чем у Макса

Steve Kaufmann is so funny, he goes on about what a massive polyglot in all these languages and sells you his language learning software. Then you hear him speak in the language and you can't help but laugh. He's slow, makes mistakes and just seems A2 at best in most of his languages. He tried to tell Matt vs Japan how to learn Japanese and then spoke like a child compared to Matt's clear, well pronounced Japanese.
I'm always taken aback when reading comments like these. Steve himself says: "languages are about communication" not about showing off..which is exactly what your guru does, show off with his 'perfect Japanese' while implanting you and others this chip of "toxic mentality". Who would we actually listen to? The dude who got depressed because of his dumb obsesion with a language? Or an experienced man who just fosters enjoyment with the language? I can't imagine anyone more stupid than Matt except for those who follow him... I can't help but laugh at one who learns Japanese to watch anime or who wants to have a perfect accent in Japanese while looking completly foreign
