I was 4 at this time, but the Wales team was to get better over the next few years. So I've a clear memory of the sports section at the end of our news mentioning, and showing, what our greats --JPR, GE, BJ etc, etc--had been up to.
This 1967 AB tour of the UK and Frances is still regarded as one of the greatest AB teams ever. Unbeaten in 17 matches including a draw the ABs won all 4 test matches but unfortunately they didn't play Ireland and the chance of a grand slam. Superbly coached by Fred Allen and captained by Brian Lochore the ABs brand of 15 man rugby was admired throughout the rugby world.
My father always regretted that Fred Allen never got the chance coach an All Black team to South Africa. He said that would have shown how good a coach Allen was.

when I played open-head in the front row I could get away with tricks and things that today would get you into the sin-bin very quickly.....front row forwards then were swifter, "free-ranging", like uncontrollable chickens, not like today when they form a sort of anchor and seem to be much slower, relying more on strength and weight
When sang properly and the REAL tenors sing it, in correct numbers it sounds great, but not when wanabee tenors try it and end up screaming, they do same for god save the queen, cringeworthy. This is how I remember the anthem, crowds much different now and when camera pan to crowd, many dont even know the words ! If they dont know the words, should not be allowed in lol

Terrible handling by both sides, the ball looked like a bar of soap. Interesting that this win set NZ level at 3 wins apiece with Wales. Been one-way traffic ever since, I'm afraid.

I was at this Game from the stand , the pitch was a quagmire, to physically kick the Ball took great effort, the referee missed a hell of a lot off the Ball , some of it he turned a blind eye. But it was an extremely Physical encounter, which the Forwards et al loved!

My G, I do love the Welsh…..one of my Dreams would have been going to Cardiff Arms Park, to watch the All Blacks verse Wales…. And enjoy more than a few great Welsh Beers with the locals. It a shame but it is now unrealistic for me to have these dreams.
I'm from an All Black family. I was teaching in Wales during this game. My Uncle Douglas Hamilton was an All Black a No 8. He was an All Black Selector during this time and for 29 years.. So selected several of the All Blacks playing here. When the students knew I was Doug Hamilton's niece, they all begged for my Autograph. Those were the days. Labour have ruined Welsh Rugby.......

GE, arguably the greatest rugby player in the history of the game. Barry John was my rugby master. The finest fly-half I have watched man and boy. His only weakness was in the tackle, not quite up to the other greats wearing the No. 10 jersey, viz Cliff Morgan, Phil Bennet and Neil Jenkins who were more committed in that department.

Yes, up to a point. I understand that American football was developed from rugby football at American colleges in the late 19th century. To start with, they has the same ball, same goal posts, touchdowns followed by a "try" at kicking a goal. American football diverged greatly when it started allowing forward passes (but only one per play I think) and blocking of opposition players not in possession of the ball - a foul in rugby.

@@martybourke2428 As a school kid i remember the 1970 series against the Springboks and the 1971 series against the Lions In the Springbok series McCormick had about a 30% kicking success rate,and had a real drop off in form during that series, to the point Bryan Williams was taking the place kicks in the 3rd test, and was dropped for the 4th test, in his only test in 71, he missed a few kicks a couple right in front of the posts, Garth Edwards went off injured in that First test & it was Ray (Chico) Hopkins who played most of that game, giving Barry John the space and time he needed for those pin point kicks, McCormick was simply not the player he was against the Welsh in 1969. The pity was the All Black Selector never looked at a couple of Maori Fullbacks that were better than McCormick or Mains for that 1971 series I.e Ken Going and Butch Pickering As always just my opinion based on what i remember from that time,

When I was a rugby rookie in high school in Northern California, my family billeted Kel's son on his high school's tour of the US. I vividly remember facing the Haka (and thinking "what the HELL is that?") before my first ever game played. And, naturally, being destroyed on the pitch. That was likely in 1984.
I studied as an Exchange Student in Kel's city of Napier NZ in 1969....he was larger than life back then---his son Chris later became a member of Parliament and a successful businessman in Napier......his Hawkes Bay team went undefeated for three seasons....and Kel operated a local travel agency....Thought you might like to know.....Bob Buehner....Danville PA

Honestly the skills and standards of play were awful even allowing for the conditions. Today's players would annihilate them. Ball retention was non existent. Even those these guys were my heros in the 1960s😂
It's too bad the Welsh backs didn't open up and Barry John didn't do much but kick touch finders in this pre kick-into-touch laws (Australian Dispensation) game. One thing is also that, unlike in New Zealand where extra balls were used during play, only one leather ball was used. Stupid!
When you look at the scene & players it feels & looks more like 1937 than '67 The Summer of Lurve. But Wales was still very 19th Century. Still, come JPR, Gareth Edwards et al would give it all a bit Led Zep! The crowd singing at a high standard was not bettered there. Ahhh bw telly folks. Thats how I spent my yoof & childhood. I was in the crowd when Wales best Scotland with a last second Shane Williams and for nearly that entire passage of play (you can even hear it on TV) there were women literally screeching at the top of their voice. BTW this doesn't apply to all women as I've met a lot who don't do this, it's more the ones who only go to the games for the social aspect rather than love of the game as a lot of women don't screech at the top of their lungs constantly but the ones who do drown them out

Those leather balls were terribly heavy and slippery when wet.

Yes of his sons attended Napier Boys High. Simon became a provincial player and was in the Hawke's Bay team to defeat the Lions in the 90s.
